I went into this thinking that it was a touristy thing, but there were a lot of locals who appeared to be in Wedding parties. That said, the kimonos get pretty nice, but that is not what your reservation gets you. When we went, for my reservation, I had about a dozen kimonos to choose from. They were nice, but kind of plain. The photo they have in the advertisement is pretty accurate. I am also a big guy, so that is what they had that would fit me. To get the "samurai" kimono, there was a bit of an upcharge, like 150%. I have to note, none of the other customers, that I saw, went this route.
My wife had a similar experience, not because of fit, but because she wanted something nicer. She looked really great. We got a lot of compliments from tourists and locals alike.
Out the door, I had to pay an extra 150% of the original booking. Be forewarned. They recommended the upgrade, but they weren't pushy about it.
Fitting went smooth. They allowed us in early, and got us fitted in about an hour. It was a Saturday, so as we were leaving, they said they were closing at 5:30, so please be back before 5:00. I don't think that was in the original schedule.
Be warned, the real deal kimono is several layers of clothing, and can get hot...and the sandals are not very comfortable for long walks.
