Our trip to the Atlas Mountains was one of the highlights of our visit to Morocco, and we definitely recommend it! We saw some beautiful and unique sights en route to Imlil in the High Atlas Mountains and especially during the hike to the waterfalls. Mustapha was our delightful guide with a keen sense of humor. Along the way, he shared many interesting facts about Moroccan culture, particularly about his Amazigh people and life in the mountains. His is a family business, not a big commercial company, so booking this tour contributes to a beautiful extended family, all of which are involved.
We started our tour in a modern and comfortable 15-pax bus. Along the way we stopped briefly at one of the oldest villages in the area and at one of the women’s Argan Oil cooperatives. These ladies were lovely, treating us to food, music, a talk about Argan oil and a demonstration of several of their products. You can buy their products there, but no one pushed us to do so.
Upon arrival in the Imlil valley, Mustapha took us on an hour-long walk and hike to the 3 waterfalls area then back to his family’s home. The hike was beautiful with abounding natural beauty and a glimpse of the homes along the mountain slopes and some of the life of the residents. Lunch at Mustapha’s family home was delightful: tajines, salads, vegetables with couscous, and bread, served on the rooftop with a lovely view. Mustapha’s large near and extended family cooked and served. Delicious!
The route home included a stop for riding camels around a loop. The large 10-year-old male camel, named Mike Jackson, was in the lead with his females tied behind him (including Madonna, apparently). Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better day—a 5 plus star day! Thank you to Mustapha and your family!
Do be aware that while the hike is beautiful, some short portions are steeply uphill. You’ll be crossing very narrow bridges, walking along narrow ledges and occasionally through terrain that resembles a dry, rocky creek bed. We aren’t young and were able to do it but wear appropriate shoes. If you are of reasonably good health, it is SO worth it!!
