What To Expect

Depart your central Reykjavik hotel (if option selected) or depart from a central pickup point by air-conditioned coach and gaze out over Iceland’s rugged landscapes as you journey toward the south coast.

As you travel, listen as your guide shares tales of south Iceland, an area rich in picturesque villages and natural spectacles such as glacial rivers, waterfalls, and volcanic peaks.

Drive through villages such as Selfoss, Vik, and Kirkjubaejarklaustur, and marvel at the snow-capped mountains and epic landscapes of Skaftafell, part of the Vatnajökull National Park.

Visit the spectacular Skogarfoss waterfall, and drive through the volcanic desert of Skeidarasandur—a vast sand plain where sandstorms can be so intense that they strip paint from cars!
Pass Iceland's largest active volcano, the ice-covered, sub-glacial Oraefajokull, and gaze up at 6950-foot (2,119-meter) Hvannadalshnjukur on its summit crater, the country’s highest peak.

Shortly afterward, arrive at Jokulsarlon Lagoon: a breathtaking expanse of water strewn with ice chunks that has provided the backdrop for several action films, including the James Bond hit 'Die Another Day' and the 2001 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' movie.

Stop a Seljalandfoss on your way back to Reykjavik, where you have the opportunity to follow the path behind the falls. Your day trip concludes with drop-off at your original departure point.

The South Coast tour was easy to book, and all information was provided. The tour is a very long day, but both me and my teenage daughter had a great day. We were lucky to have really good weather, so we were able to see more of the landscape on our journey to each stop. The guide explained what we were seeing on the way, sharing both the facts and folklore, we really enjoyed all the folklore stories. We had plenty of time at each stop to enjoy at our own leisure with a time to come back by. The time is important as there is a schedule to keep to so we do not lose time at other stops, unfortunately there are always a few that do not listen making everyone else wait, leaving the guide to try and find them. Every destination had amazing sights, and showing what a beautiful country iceland is. Diamond Beach was our favourite, and the guide explained that we were lucky as there was not normally that many diamonds. The last part of the journey to Diamond Beach was so windy, and i can only say what an amazing driver we had to be able to drive in these conditions. On our journey back we had a few issues with the bus because of the wind being so strong, the bonnet popped open twice, wind causing luggage compartment alarm to go off and the roft sky light popped open and in the end would not shut. This could have been a scary situation but both the driver and guide were amazing, keeping the situation calm and under control, even when they were having to push with force to open the door to let the guide out to fix the problems, as the wind was so strong the doors couldn't open. While the guide was standing holding the roof window shut driving to a safe place to stop, it stayed calm and both the guide and drivers sense of humour kept the situation positive. After fixing the bus with what we could pull together on the bus so we could carry on the guide stayed professional with no indication of stress, we even still managed to do the last stop at the waterfall on the way home. Unfortunately the bus got a little worse 30 mins from the city and a decision was made to wait for a new bus to collect us. We were all dropped as close to our hotels as possible as it was very late when we got back. This is probably something that does not happen but wanted to say that even in the worst situation we were in safe hands with the guide and driver, they were amazing. Looking back this just showed us how unpredictable Iceland can be with the quick change of weather and what icelandic population live with daily. Thank you for an amazing day.

Kristi & our driver were so knowledgeable and provided us with the best south coast experience. Highly recommend if you are looking to cover a lot of distance in a short period.
Long trip but definitely worth it
Chiming_C, May 2024
Our driver/ tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Since it's a small group, we got the chance to chat with him and learned a lot about the country. Aside from the arrenged stops, he would also make quick stops for photo shoots. The scenery was amazing, we saw two types of glaciers, from the mountains and from the ocean. This was a very long trip, we drove for 10 hours, but it is definitely worth it.
Must do trip

LONG TRIP BUT WORTH IT
ZacharyJohn_L, Apr 2024
The experience was fun and our guide, Kris, always takes the opportunity for us to stop at important sights, even if it is not included in the itinerary. She provides us enriching information about Iceland and she cracks up jokes at times because the entire trip was long and exhausting. The driver was very stern and strict, though, he does not allow food or drinks inside the bus. It was hard because the tour was long and we end up getting hungry.

Best tour for time and value
Anita_A, Mar 2024
Our tour guide Christy was very knowledgeable and nice. Our driver Herman was a safe and experienced driver. If you have limited time this is the best choice to cover a lot in one day. However at some spots we could have appreciate a little more flexibility on time especially during lunch time.
Response from Host, Apr 2024

Grayline Tours to be avoided at all costs/ Viator fails to do the right thing
Robert_L, Mar 2024
So here is our saga with this tour in Iceland with local tour group Gray Line. Note that this review is entirely on the tour group and NOT on the beauty of Iceland which is unquestionable. Tour company from the beginning failed to confirm our multiple outreaches as to where to meet for pick in the morning. Concerned, we called them the evening prior and provided our Booking ID number as provided by Viator and was informed that they had no record of us. After some back and forth they "found us" and informed us where to meet the following morning which was not the hotel pickup as in the description of this tour. No big deal as bus stop was nearby. Tour start was to be at 8am but we were informed to be there at 7:30am or would be considered "late". No problem... we got there at 7:15am and stood in the rain waiting. At 7:30 we called just to inform them that we were waiting in the rain to which we were advised to wait as the driver was 15 minutes away. Well after 20 minutes we called again to only be informed that the driver would be there in 10 minutes. At 8:15 we called and they clearly realized that they forgot us and sent our a small van to run us out to the main bus that had been waiting full of people in a gas station :20 minutes away. When I asked the driver why they never picked us up at 7:30, he quickly snapped that he came but we weren't there!!! When I countered that statement he acknowledge never coming. LIE number one for Grayline. After boarding the main bus we came to realize that the only remaining seats had been in the back of the bus immediately in front of 4 young 20 something DRUNK and completely out of control women from the UK. They refused to stop talking over the tour leaders microphone story telling making it impossible to hear anything for the back half of the bus. Repeated efforts to bring that group under some control by myself was met with belligerence from the 4 unruly "ladies." We informed the tour leader of the problem as did other passengers and while she did raise the issue with the problem passengers, NOTHING was resolved and the antics continued for 14 hours. They treated this as their own personal party bus and had complete disregard for all other passengers. This was NOT a peaceful tour of the Icelandic countryside. The tour advertised stop of Glacier Lagoon AND Diamond Beach however it was clear that they were not going to stop at Diamond Beach and said if we wanted to see it we could walk across a highway which would consume 30-45 minutes of the Glacier Lagoon tour. Effectively we were told to choose which of the two we wanted to see but that was NOT the itinerary of the tour paid for. So we never got to see Diamond Beach despite it being on our bucket list. No further apology or explanation was given. Basically we got to see Glacier Lagoon and two waterfalls in 14 hours. While each stunning in their beauty, this tour failed to meet some basic expectations. They lost our reservation. They forgot to pick us up. They subjected a bus full of people to a group of drunk immature/ out of control passengers. AND they failed to include in the tour stops that were advertised as specifically included. We requested a refund for this mess of a trip and were met with a denial via email in 12 hours with no apology or explanation for the denial. With a brief google search it's clear that this is a pattern with Viator and as such we will no longer be booking any tours going forward with them as they refuse to acknowledge when things go horribly wrong. They actually tried to turn this into our fault for not being there at the initial stop which again was completely inaccurate and doesnt account for the other problems such as drunk passengers on the bus and stops NOT being made as advertised. HUGE Fail for Viator and a Red Flag for any travelers getting put on a Grayline tour. There are plenty of alternatives that are far better and actually work with their customers when unplanned schedule changes occur such the closing of the blue lagoon due to volcanic activity on our trip the day before. That tour operator simply credited us for that portion of the missed trip. Perfect way to handle an issue and clearly not an approach that Grayline or Viator takes with their issues. Avoid booking this tour at all costs or buyer be aware.
Recommend but read review
misty_c, Feb 2024
Driver and tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and would recommend. However, the waterfall stop stated viewing from up and down but only 20 mins at stop and guide recommended not to go up due to time restriction. 2nd waterfall stated walk behind but it was closed, our tour was booked less than a week before date, so they knew but advertised as walk behind. Longer bathroom stops than waterfall stops. Also, glacier boat does not run in winter time, that would have been great to know. Again, tour guide was wonderful!!!
Tour guide brings experience to life!!

Amelia our guide, was so personable, and interested in our stories too! She didn’t just give her spiel, she helped make my granddaughters and I feel special too!! The diamond beach and the 2 lagoons were magical!!, the whole day, for all its travel, was great!!
A must do!!
Katherine_W, Feb 2024
Amazing day from start to end! Weather hampered us a bit as it rained for a lot of it but definitely didn’t take anything away from the amazing sights. Iceland is a crazy country with beautiful landscapes. Top tip if travelling at this time of Yr - bring crampons to put over your shoes even if you’ve got walking boots because a lot of the attractions are like ice rinks! You’ll waste soo much of your allotted time if you don’t & you def won’t get the full up close experience!
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Thanks Katherine. We’re thrilled that you were satisfied with our services. Your feedback is appreciated, and we hope to be of help again soon! Best regards, GrayLineTeam
Absolute wanders of iceland
Akhila_K, Feb 2024
It was an amazing trip. Got to see so many beautiful places and northern lights while returning which was coincidental but the guide was cooperative
Response from Host, Mar 2024
We would not be able to grow and develop without feedback like yours, Akhila. We are thrilled you had a great experience with us and hope to see you again soon. Best regards, Gray Line Team
Don’t do it……
Louise_N, Jan 2024
The tour operator wouldn’t let me on the pick up bus as they said I wasn’t on their pick up list. I get that! They then contacted their office and then told me a smaller bus would be to pick me up a few minutes later and it never showed. I phoned about 10 minutes later to be told I had missed the tour. I then of course complained and have been told by Viator and the tour company that they were there for pick up and missing the tour was my fault -therefore they won’t refund me. £150 out of pocket - sorry please find another more reputable tour operator. Just so disappointing and I will take it up with Iceland tourism board.
Great day
Emily_M, Jan 2024
Very long day out but definitely worth every minute, our tour guide Karen was amazing! Felt so comfortable with everything.
Great excursion along the South Coast.
Avril_L, Jan 2024
This is a super tour, covering a long distance over a period of day, but well worth it to see the amazing glacier bay and Diamond Beach. I picked this company because most of the tours weren’t offering to go that far in and back (to Reykjavik) so it was unique in that aspect. The guide and driver were good and gave plenty of information. This would have been much better if the stop on the way back for dinner was somewhere different than where we stopped on the way down but that is a minor quibble. Seeing the sights along this part of the coast, especially Glacier Bay and Diamond Beach is a really amazing experience and well worth the very early start and late return. The stop at Vik for the black sand beach is also memorable.
Asses daylight hours before booking.
James_M, Jan 2024
Whilst the sites visited were excellent and the guide knowledgeable and the driver very professional the tour in mid winter is something you should avoid. With only 4 and a half hours of daylight the other 9 hours are in darkness. The advert is also deceiving in that there is no amphibious vehicle in the winter months.
