Do not go to Vatican around Easter!

Vatican/Rome around Easter is crazy busy. Our original excursion was rebooked, and we were rebooked on a Spanish tour. Since there were no other English tours available that day, we were told to buy our own headset and do our own unguided tour, even though we had booked a small guided tour experience. I understand things happen, but as a result, we did not get the experience we wanted, and only ended up having like an hour to do the whole Vatican and Sistene Chapel - and we missed the Basilica altogether (even though the description said that would be part of the guided tour) because it is separate and far from the Vatican museum (and also closed early that day). I'm sure having a guide would've been useful and that we would've seen and learned more, but since we did not get that experience, I cannot comment on it. However, we received too little of a refund for our trouble and left this area hugely disappointed in the experience. More disappointing is that my first review of this is yet to be published (not sure why?) and my last message to the tour operators has gone unanswered.

Better withoit the xrowds

The vatican is amazing to see. Our tour guide did the best she coulsld. However, the crowds were so insane that it made the experience tough to truly absorb and enjoy. Theuseum was so hot and crowded at times that you could barely move through the halls. Some people in our tour left because of the crowds. The sistene chapel was cool really you just went in looked around and left. The basilica was the best part by far. Very beautiful building with the pope tombs in the basement. Wanted more time to walk around the grounds when the toir was done but we needed to catch our train

Oversold Vatican Made Tours Less Engaging

Excellent tour guide, but the museum and Sistine Chapel was too crowded. I could barely hear my super smart tour guide due to other tours being conducted so closely to ours.

Gave Up - Did Not Meet Expectations

I had some concerns when I booked this tour that the ratings were a bit average, but I went ahead and booked in anyway because they had the day and time available that worked best with our group of 8. When I check-in they informed me that our guide did not show up for work and that they moved our tour time to later in the day. While a bit frustrating, that was not the biggest issue. There were two big issues (1) the group that they put us in later in the day was a large group 20+ when I booked a small group tour and (2) the tour guide was really poor. First, the tour guide acknowledge that this was only their second time doing the tour and it showed. Second, the guide did not have very good English so it was extremely hard to hear. The Vatican is very crowded and noisy so not having a good, well spoken, tour guide was a big inhibitor to enjoying the tour. We, like many of the others in the group, just broke off and did our own thing because we gave up trying to understand the guide. One other important consideration, the tour company uses the headsets provided by the Vatican. These are terrible headsets because they are single ear headsets, and given the Vatican is soo crowded and noisy you can hardly hear the guide. The tour company should utilize dual earbud headsets to block out as much extraneous noise as possible. It would have made for a much more enjoyable your for sure.

Getting pushed along by wall to wall people (crowd) , being told to stay together (small group of 28?)so to not stop and take photos unless the tour leader call for all to stop (not her fault -she was just doing as instructed -assumed) 2 hr tour (45mins just to get together and thru security and to first point of interest) It’s a quick walk thru no time to observe at your leisure Buy a skip ticket do it yourself -enjoy the experience So overpriced -underdelivered and not told before that the basilica (st Peters) was not available/no option of refund or discount. Have used Viator several times but this is their biggest let down. Extremely disappointing.

I dont normally do tours, but this one was amazing! it was a small group of 11-12 people. definitely felt personal as opposed to those huge groups of 20+ i saw there. the tour guide was very knowledgable and got us to see alot of stuff on the grounds and lead us to a seperate entry not allowed unless your in a guided tour. i would def reccomend this one!

I would recommend this tour if you're interested in learning about the history of the city. Our guide Nicoletta was outstanding. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the city and museum was apparent. She knew all of the important spots we had to see and gave us interesting facts only a true expert would know. She was very patient and let us take our time with the art and in the Sistine Chapel, which was very much appreciated. After the museum and the Chapel, we were free to stay in the gardens or to follow her to St. Peter's Basilica. It was a great time spent.
