What To Expect

Head to your mosaic workshop on Via Urbana in Rome. You’ll start your creative experience with an introduction to Roman mosaic techniques and history. Then, you’ll start cutting your marble tiles and plan the textures you’d like to create with your composition.

With the guidance of your teacher, you’ll create a traditional piece that follows the best principles of Roman mosaic design, ready to take home and remind you of your Rome vacation.

A very fun and educational experience. Alex and Andreana were great teachers and showed us examples of beautiful mosaics and described the different techniques. We were given many patterns to choose from and colors of mosaic marble tiles to use. It was a fun process learning to complete our mosaics. Definitely recommend!!!

Aleks and Juliana were kind, and helpful. The history of their shop was interesting, and it was good fun to spend a couple of hours learning about, and practicing the art of ancient mosaic-making. And to go home with an authentic souvenir!

This was such an interesting and fun way to spend the afternoon. Alex and Giuliana(?) (I think-sorry if incorrect) were great, they taught us about the different types of mosaic, focusing on the ancient way, there were beautiful examples of very good work all around the studio, it's amazing what you can achieve with little pieces of marble and glass - with a lot of practice! Then we got to play, picking out a design and learning to cut the marble to the shapes we needed. We worked steadily throughout the time period, and our lovely hosts were very accommodating and allowed a bit more time to make sure we all got a finished piece. A very special souvenir from Rome that we will treasure forever.

A well worthwhile art workshop w/some history

We took part in the Ancient Mosaic workshop on December 28, 2023. I would highly recommend this enlightening and fun workshop. We visited the Studio Cassio, which is centrally located in Rome. We were greeted by our maestra and learned a brief but deep history about ancient mosaic origins, style, techniques, and global applications…including works that we had seen in both the Vatican and in our home city of New York that we were delighted to learn were works of this studio. Our lesson was hands-on and not rushed; both my husband and I each selected a design to emulate (you can also choose to design your own) and we learned with expert direction how to apply the ancient mosaic technique. We were offered tea while we worked and a perfect nearby recommendation for lunch after. This is definitely NOT a tourist trap type activity. Giuliana and team were amazing. I highly recommend you spend 3 hours of your time in Rome at the Ancient Mosaic Workshop.

Nice to spend an afternoon learning more about the mosaics that you see all over Rome! Getting to create your own mosaic patch was a humbling experience, really makes you appreciate the time, effort and artistic talents that goes into it. Everyone at the studio was very friendly and its nice to create your own souvenir to take home.

It was a really enjoyable experience. We were very impressed by the background and experience of the instructors. Both instructors both designed and restored complex mosaics. It was challenging for us as we had no experience in mosaic, but the assistance was thorough. Our mosaics were completed and we now have an understanding of what mosaic can be. Our mosaics were definitely amateurish, but we enjoyed the workshop. We cannot speak more highly of this.

This was one of the coolest things I did in Rome! It was really interesting to see their work and how mosaics are made more generally, and it was also a really cool experience to try your hand at creating your own. It makes a wonderful souvenir as well. I had so much fun taking this workshop; I couldn’t recommend it any more strongly!

I highly recommend this mosaic class. It’s close to a metro stop, on a lovely street, and was easy to find. The team that runs the studio also leads the class and it was fun and easy to follow along. I enjoyed learning about the studio’s work as well. Making the mosaic is simple but not always easy, and just the right amount of challenging. Plus you leave with a lovely souvenir, that you made with your own hands. I would repeat this on my next trip to Rome and make something different! Thanks!!

What a unique and fun afternoon learning about and working on a Mosaic. The time sailed by. I had a fantastic time working on my mosaic. The instructor made it fun and enjoyable. While it won’t be hanging in a museum, it is a favorite keepsake of my time in Rome. I noticed and appreciated every mosaic I saw in Italy so much more after the class. Thanks.

Very cool setting in a mosaic workshop where they restore old and ancient mosaics and are commissioned for new pieces. It’s really well done and immensely fun. After hearing a little history of mosaics in Rome , we learned how to create our own using tiny squares of marble and stone. This is not to be missed and adds context to the mosaics you’ll see at the Vatican and in other museums.
