The Taste of Testaccio tour lasts for approximately 4 hours and finishes at Giolitti on Via Amerigo Vespucci, 35. After the tour, your guide will be happy to arrange a taxi or give you directions.
What To Expect
Make your way off the tourist track for this walking tour through Testaccio, a historical Roman neighborhood. After meeting your food-loving guide, set off on your exploration that introduces you to the local culinary scene.
Stop by shops and eateries like the Barberini pastry shop, where you can sample baked treats that have been enjoyed here for more than 50 years. Visit a food market for a look at high-quality produce, and chat with some of the local vendors. At Testaccio Market, you’ll have the chance to sample authentic buffalo mozzarella and make your own bruschetta.
Next, enjoy a fried rice ball, a local specialty known as suppli, at Trappizino, and then visit one of the neighborhood’s best restaurants for traditional Roman cuisine, where you’ll taste fresh pasta and wine. Other stops on your tour include Giolitti Caffe and Gelateria, where artisan gelato has been made for more than 100 years, and the Volpetti cheese shop, where 150 cheeses can be found.
While you walk, your guide will share some of Rome’s lesser-known history and point out sights like the city’s only pyramid and the Protestant Cemetery, where John Keats is buried. Your tour ends just a couple of blocks from your starting point; you are free to continue exploring on your own from here, or hop on public transport, a short walk away.

We did this tour on our second day in Rome and it was the perfect start to our trip. Our tour guide Valter was fantastic. He gave us the history of the food we were eating, what it was, what the customs are to eating it and so much more information. He had a very casual touring style that we loved. We really enjoyed his company, his humor, and his ability to lead a group. I would highly recommend doing this tour to anyone who comes to Rome, you will not regret it!

We've done food tours in Rome before, but this tour of Testaccio was a really pleasure compared to the crowds we've encountered in the Trastevere area. I can eat more than most, and I'll tell you -- this was a lot of food. We had croissants, charcuterie, suppli, pork sandwiches, bruschetta, caprese salad, pasta and gelato -- and we really enjoyed pretty much all of it. The market was a very interesting place and we enjoyed the items there. Luca did a great job as guide. Overall a great experience in Rome.

Our tour with Luca was fantastic! It was our first time in Rome and visiting the Testaccio area - we got to try a bit of everything (coffee, street foods, pastas, gelato), visit the local market and learn a lot of history.
Would highly recommend to any foodie or those interested in learning more about the area!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Rish! It was nice to escape the hustle and bustle of Rome for a few hours to explore the quieter neighborhood of Testacchio. We stopped at local, family owned establishments as well as the market and enjoyed incredible food! Rish was an amazing guide - knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the food and history. We learned so much and would definitely recommend!

The history of the food is not something people often think of, but definitely an interesting part of the experience. Of course the various food items were incredible and in keeping with what the guide (Gianluca) prepared us for. Being of Italian background the overall experience was surprisingly great and would recommend it to others.
