Great Roman Guide

Maria was a great guide especially about the Roman culture and cuisine. However, this tour is not good value if you do not consume wine. To be clear, Maria was impressive as our guide and we would book her again on other sightseeing tours.

Great experience, mediocre food

Overall, it was a good experience in that I walked away with knowledge that I didn't have before; however it still could have been better. First the highlights. Paola is very knowledgable and a great instructor. We made braised artichoke as an appetizer - learning how to properly clean, prepare and cook them, which was amazing as I had always wanted to do that with someone who knew how to do it properly. We also prepared three types of pastas (a stuffed, a long and gnocchi). Paola and her assistant walked through each of the steps and answered questions while making the experience engaging and fun. I really appreciated that there was wine flowing throughout and they weren't stingy with it. While the techniques and approach to preparing the food was great, I felt like the food itself fell short of expectations and it was one of my least favorite things I ate during my time in Rome. The food was under-seasoned and I felt like there was so much potential to make everything just a little better. They finished the food and plating for us, but it would have been better for everyone to finish their own plate. For example, we made a pomodoro sauce, which as explained, is the mother red sauce. From that it would have been very easy to give a few other ingredients to allow each person to turn it into one of the many Italian red sauces. The dessert was just chopped up persimmon, which felt like a missed opportunity and a disappointing ending. I understand the economics of the class, and as there were just 5 of us, I imagine they were trying to minimize costs, but still, food could have been better with just a minimal incremental investment in ingredients and a bit more autonomy over the final execution of the dishes. I would still recommend this class as a solid a learning experience and I am happy with the knowledge with which I walked away; however it did fall short of some of my expectations, especially in a city with such amazing food.

Delicious food and a fantastic host! We got to see a part of the city we hadn’t yet explored. And when we had difficulty getting transportation to the meeting place, the tour company was remarkably flexible and accommodating. Overall, a great experience!

Our guide was very nice but seemed to be lacking in enthusiasm. The food was fine, starting with cured meats and cheese with wine plus a stop for suppli, but then at the main stop, we were served 4 different pasta dishes with no explanation of what we were eating or the cultural significance. The desserts were good, tiramasu, gelato, and lemoncello but it felt as though we could have done it all on our own. There was nothing unique. All in all, it was disappointing.

Amazing communication from the team, we were upgraded to another tour. Andrea was utterly brilliant, so informative, patient, funny and extremely friendly! The food was... Wow. It's our first time in Italy & we are so glad we have come and for our first night in Rome our tour was not a disappointment. We booked this tour the evening we arrived in Rome to stay up and adjust to the time change! We were upgraded to the Jewish Ghetto Food Tour with Illaria, this was a walking tour with 6 stops. We started with apps and local wine, next stop was pizza, fried artichokes, multiple pasta dishes with more local wine, tiramisu, cappuccino and closed the night with gelato!! Highly recommend this tour!!

We enjoyed this trip with the family but the food was mediocre. Unfortunately, it was extremely hot making the walking around very tiring. Our guide Marco was too soft spoken and didn’t take into account the sounds of the city making it hard to hear him at times.
