Not for Kids!!! Excellent Bike Trip!

Riding the top of ride was best! Sunrise was great. The driver was friendly and gave us some great facts of the island. And our bike guide The "Marine" was very tentative to everyone's needs. If I did it again I would do the self guided trip. Once given instructions you could handle the bike ride. You have to feel comfortable on the bike tho. You get some Very Fast speed going! We're in our 60s and active. I'd book here again. They have backpacks rain gear tops and bottoms free if needed. Great Experence!!!!

Good tour guides, well organized trip to summit. Have to leave at 3:30am from the site. Very cold, pack your winter coat in addition to taking the company provided windbreaker jacket and pants. Guided tour stops traffic for you. Self guided is mostly same but you have to watch for traffic,

The weather was not cooperative for our trip. It was freezing and raining at the summit so we couldn't see the sunrise. It rained while we rode the bikes. I also didn't realize we were riding on a road so that was a little disappointing, but it was still a fun experience.

Totally worth the early AM wake up

We’re so glad we decided to do this tour! There are so many to choose from on the island, but I feel that we made the best choice with this one! Our driver, Eddie, was terrific! He did an excellent job of explaining his culture and making us laugh at 4am! You can just tell he loves what he does! He took some pretty awesome photos of us! Observing the sunrise was an incredible experience! It was worth the 2am wake up. Highly recommend! The actual bike riding down after the sunrise was amazing and had phenomenal views! Drew also shared pertinent information and kept us laughing. Maholo to Eddie, Drew, and their team for such a fun morning on my husband’s birthday!

Note: as of this review, the description is not accurate. Coffee and breakfast stop has been eliminated. The pick up time is 3:30 am when nothing is open. If they were not providing breakfast before an extensive bike trip, it would have been nice to know ahead of time so we could have made other plans for ourselves. The tour itself was all the other reviews have stated. No regrets, just wish we hadn’t been exerting ourselves on empty bellies !

What an absolutely amazing experience!! The sunrise was great! I was a little nervous but our guides were fantastic! They explained everything we needed to know before we began our adventure! It was one of the greatest things we did on our Hawaiian trip! We highly recommend this, you will love it!

Watching the sunrise over the volcano was spectacular! Riding bikes down the switchbacks on the mountain was exciting and well conducted. The guides gave great lessons and were very safety conscious.

This was a great experience. We were a little disappointed that we couldn’t ride down the whole way but that was not the fault of the company- relatively new laws and contracts with the National Park and the city of Kula limit how far commercial guides can take their customers. We did do the switchbacks twice and that alone was thrilling, hence the five stars. Sunset was beautiful but flipping cold do take the pants and jackets they offer you! You can always ditch them before you ride. I appreciated the guided tour as I’m not a super experienced rider (I’m good enough but don’t do it all the time), and the instruction we got helped ease what anxiety I had. All in all super fun!

Such a great experience! The tour guides were all awesome! So friendly and funny. The drive up to the sunset was really good and the bike down was even better. I totally recommend this experience 🤙

Everything was very well organized at the base. The whole team was very professional and safety conscious but made sure you had a great time. Eddie was the best driver. A life changing experience for healing brings the best is to come

The encouragement given by our guides were making it possible for me to go up then biking down the Haleakala mountain. Thank you to Ryan, Larry and Roy I think, the one that has been going up for the last 33 years. A life changing experience. The highlight of my sunrise experience is the Hawaiian chant at the top. The team at Bike Maui were incredible. They drove us to see the amazing sunrise and regaled us with stories and information about the native plants and history of the island. They carefully orchestrated the group in the bike ride down the mountain. This provided a full day of entertainment and a great introduction to Maui.

Beautiful sunrise and very knowledgeable and pleasant tour guides. I liked that we arrived shortly before sunrise so we weren’t waiting in the freezing cold too long. The bike ride was all downhill, no pedaling at all just braking. You’re going down with a good amount of speed, so even though it’s not physically demanding I would still recommend some comfort on a bike ahead of time. We had a great time and would recommend it!

Amazing experience! Absolutely loved seeing the view and the sunrise. The bike down was intense. Only reason I gave this a 4 and not a 5 was I didn’t realize how fast you can go and how those turns can be super intense if you’re not used to it. But, I do like the option of hoping on the bus if you don’t feel comfortable. Definitely wear the layers!! We loved our tour guide Russel and Cory. Russel took some great pictures of us and had great information about Haleakala, he was also great at giving direction for biking. We look forward to seeing his project come to life and maybe hike and camp Haleakala one day.

Haleakala sunrise bike ride disappointing

We took this same trip about 20 years ago and it was fantastic. Unfortunately, this 2023 version fell far short. There was a raging rain & wind storm when we left at 3am, and it was forecast to continue for the entire day across the entire mountain, yet the trip was not canceled. We knew to expect rain, mist and cold at the top so early in the morning, and that sunrise over the caldera may not be seen, but to continue the trip with such a horrendous forecast for the downhill bike ride spoke of more concern for Bike Maui profits than for their guests' experience. We actually planned our trip so that we could reschedule in case of poor weather (as they guarantee they'll do if possible), but we had no choice because they didn't cancel the trip. We think they should have. 20 years ago the bike ride provided beautiful vistas of agricultural fields & the ocean, through eucalyptus groves & charming mountain towns. BUT!…now bikers are only allowed below the Nat’l Park boundary at 6500’ (used to start at top—10K’). And the town of Kula no longer permits bikers to ride the middle section of Haleakala. So now you get your bike at 6500’, ride for 5 miles, get back on the van to ride thru Kula environs, then ride the bike for the bottom 5 miles which are not at all scenic or interesting. Used to see vast pineapple plantations & sugar cane fields on the island> the last of those closed in 2016 (no longer economical to grow/process & ship from Hawaii) so the fields below Haleakala are not as beautiful. IF you decide to go, be aware you may not see sunrise (always clouds/weather at the top), the bike ride itself is not so great anymore(see above), BUT the Bike Maui personnel WERE excellent and we had an amazing, informative & colorful lesson on the history, people, agriculture, & volcanos of Hawaii from our van driver, Marlon. Our bike ride leader, Russell was experienced and reassuring for newer riders & very kind. Also, if you ride at all, consider the UNguided tour which gives you the van ride up the mountain & you bike down yourself without van support from 6500’. Call & ask if the unguided rides are able to bike through Kula which would be more enjoyable….I think they may be allowed...

Watching the vibrant colors of the sunrise was an experience that I will never forget!!! In spite of having to get up at the wee hours of the morning and the wind that took our breath away as we were waiting for the sun to rise, it was well worth it! The bike ride down was also an experience that I will never forget. Our guide, Russell, was great! He was so positive and reassuring on our ride, and we learned quite a bit about the Maui environment!
