What To Expect

Begin your 5-hour private tour with a pickup from your central Amman hotel, and travel by comfortable, air-conditioned minivan to the hilltop Citadel that rises up over the Jordanian capital.

On route, hear interesting facts behind this rock-top collection of Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic ruins and head inside to explore. See the stunning Roman temple, colonnaded streets and other relics as a guide unravels the history of each monument.

Continue to Amman’s spectacular, 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, once part of the ancient city of Philadelphia that once stood on the site of today’s modern capital. Admire the scale and symmetry of the stunning, 6,000-seater arena, and hear from your guide how it was built to face north to shelter spectators from the fiercest heat of the sun.

Having explored here, sit back and relax as you leave Amman and drive to the archaeological ruins at Jerash. Soak up the views of the passing towns and desert landscapes, and along the way, hear the history of Jerash. Largely established by Alexander the Great in the 2nd century BC, this ancient city was one of the most prosperous in the Roman Empire, and was covered by sand for centuries until its remnants were discovered in 1806.

Head through the ancient city gate and walk around the well-preserved ruins as your guide tells you tales about the city in its heyday. See its arches, theaters and elegant colonnaded street and snap photos of the stunning Oval Plaza, the intriguing egg-shaped public square framed by standing columns.

After your walking tour, return to Amman where your experience finishes with a drop-off at your hotel.

Must see! Highly recommended. However tourism board's guide at the site was only interested in tips and started discussing tips right from the start of the tour.

Tour driver was more than a half...
Edward_L, Apr 2017
Tour driver was more than a half hour late picking me up, and when I called the local tour operator number it was out of service, I had to call Viator for help. When I asked the driver how long it would take to drive to Jerash he told me a landslide had blocked the main road and it would take 2-1/2 hours each way, well more than the time I had just to drive to and from. I wondered if, had I not inquired, he would have just started driving me there anyway! He took me on a tour of Amman and some locations south of Amman toward the airport, from which he had picked me up on a private arrangement. The driver was not knowledgeable of the places he took me and I mainly figured out what I was seeing myself. Driver spent a lot of time on what appeared to be personal cell phone calls. While taking me back to the airport the driver pressured me to write, sign and give to him an evaluation while I was still dependent on him getting mew back to the airport in time for my connecting flight, so if he shows that as proof what a great job he did, it was coerced. I made the best of a bad situation. I still have confidence in Viator but would not recommend this driver or this local provider.

The Amman City part of this tour was not too great but Jerash made up for that. One of the better things to see in Jordan.

You get the loveliest travel guide if you manage to get Shaadi, in saying that Jerash is lovely, you will get a guide who expects a tip (as do most people in Jordan) but Amman, not much to see and glad we left it to the last day as we were a tad exhausted by that stage. Shaadi was accoomodating of our request to see the experience the real food of Jordan, went to a lovely restaurant serving local food and eating with the locals.

It was an Amazing, But I did not like the Tour Guide telling me he depends on tips to survive and demanding a tip from me. Very unprofessional and a complete turn off.
The Private Half Day Jerash and Amman...
Graham Walker, Nov 2011
The Private Half Day Jerash and Amman City Sightseeing Tour provides a dramatic insight into the extraordinary growth of two cities. Amman, the capital of Jordan, formerly known as Philadelphia, exploding from a small, sleepy town into a modern metropolis with 2.4 million people, almost half of the Kingdom’s population; and Jerash, a city of 30,000 at its zenith and one of the most important centres in the former Roman Empire.

I saw a lot and it was a good tour. I payed for the driver in this package. This tour was very expensive because I was by myself. I did not like the driver telling me he depends on tips to survive and demanding a tip from me. Very unprofessional and a complete turn off.

The driver picked us up on time and spoke good English. We loved Jerash and had a good guide, loved the chariot race and Roman legion show. I felt that everytime we passed something interesting in Amman our driver was on his cell phone. I guess they have 2 jobs.
We travelled throughout the Middle East...
Cheryl W, May 2008
We travelled throughout the Middle East and thought these were among the best preserved Roman ruins we saw. The gladiator show is billed as the only one actually held in a real hippodrome--extra charge. DO note that the driver is NOT your guide, and if you want a guide you will need to be prepared to pay a fee. Our driver selected an excellent guide for us. Not much to see in Amman City, however, so you might want to do that on your own.
