Otto the Handsome Dutchman was our guide for this extensive tour of the culinary delights of Amsterdam. We visited three areas and sampled many foods and spirits. I can easily recommend this tour to others visiting Amsterdam and suggest you take it early in your visit.

    Poor value, very inexperienced guide
    Marie_F, Apr 2024
My husband and I attended the 6pm Amsterdam Food tour on the Canals on Sunday evening, April 21. We were very disappointed. We were promised five stops but had only three; we didn’t try herring (the shop ran out) or stroopwaffles (no explanation given) as promised in the tour description. The guide, Dennis, seemed inexperienced. He is a nice person, but he spent too much time on his life story (other fields he worked in, businesses that failed due to the pandemic, his child, etc), which was was inappropriate. He barely discussed the origins of the foods we tried. For the gouda cheeses we were told "this is the young one”; "this is the middle-aged one”, "this is the goat cheese”, and "this is the oldest”; nothing about the history or how it is made. We had a bit of Port wine and he briefly mentioned that there are a number of Portuguese immigrants in Amsterdam. Because he spoke for so long, we almost missed the second stop, which was about to close. At that stop we tried a Dutch precursor to gin. This was good because there was a complete explanation given by the proprietor. The third and last stop was a pub. The "traditional stew" we were served was a dollop of lumpy mashed potatoes and a small piece of sausage. This was followed by a single bitterballen for each person. These were good, but no one told us about the ingredients or origin. This was followed by poffertjies, which also were good but there was little explanation beyond the origin of the name. This tour wasn’t worth half what we paid. We have done food tours in many cities (Istanbul, Delhi, Seville, Madrid, etc.); all were more informative and provided enough food to count as a meal. We had to have dinner after this tour. It pains me to submit this review because Dennis is a nice person, but he needs more training.
    Brilliant Dutch Experience!

Our tour guide, Joeri, made the experience so fun and inviting from the moment we met. His knowledge of Amsterdam and cuisine was informative and engaging, and he went out of his way to make the group feel comfortable. The food was delicious and gave us a great understanding of the Dutch cuisine and lovely spots to eat. This is a fantastic and jam packed tour.
    Fun and tasty afternoon!

We had a wonderful time in Amsterdam with our tour guide, Joeri. He was fun, personable and informative. I think he really enjoyed showing us around the canals and Jordaan area. We had a very nice variety of Dutch bites. Highly recommend.

Dennis was a wonderful leader! Very knowledgable, accommodating, and a joy to be around. When one planned venue was too full he quickly redirected us to another option. Lots of history about the food and Amsterdam.

This was a really great food walking tour with a lot of Amsterdam history included. Our local tour guide was Aarre L Brenton and he was very knowledgable and personable, making the whole experience really fun. It was a great way to see a lot of the city and experience some traditional dutch food. highly recommend this tour.
    Very interesting and innovative tour!

Our guide, Joeri, was knowledgeable, friendly and fun! His tour of Amsterdam and local cuisine was focused on food, but was informative as well. To fully enjoy, one must be prepared to take one or two food ‘risks’, but we all did it and had fun doing so. Highly recommended!

Our guide was lovely and it was a great way to try the local foods and see cute neighborhoods. The cheese shop and chocolate shops were both beautiful and love to go back again for souvenirs

Excellent food tour of the Jordaan area
    Stephen_S, Apr 2024
We had a thoroughly enjoyable food and walking tour of the Jordaan. Our guide, Joris, was a college student who grew up in the Jordaan area and certainly has a love and enthusiasm for his work. We not only learned about the food, but we were also given insight into Dutch culture and history. Overall a well guided and interesting tour of a beautiful section of Amsterdam.

The Real Amsterdam Small Group Food Tour on Canals and Jordaan was amazing! We highly recommend this food tour to anyone visiting Amsterdam. Otto was our tour guide and did an amazing job of telling us both the history of Amsterdam and showing us the best places to get delicious food! Best part of our trip so far!

    Sarah_P, Apr 2024
I loved the small group vibe, as well as getting to experience all different types of food. I now know why the fries are such a big deal! Haha
    Great tasting of delicious food.

It poured rain but we still enjoyed. Loved the cheese. And the little pancakes the most. First time going on a food tour.
    Great experience!
    Dorothy_L, Apr 2024
Joris, our guide, was very knowledgeable and personable. He related details about Dutch life that were very interesting. He is a lovely young man and a natural guide. The food stops were delicious and authentic and we loved the beer and Bitterballen stop in a local bar. We ended up with only four people on the tour total so it was very easy to talk with the guide about all things Dutch. Five stars!
