This experience tour was a disaster and a complete waste of money.
When we arrived Vetulio Bondi refused to conduct the class saying he had declined it to the tour operator as he had only just got home from a tour overseas (basically as far as we could see he couldn’t be bothered despite being in the shop). We were sent to another shop that ended up being a 30 minute walk.
Here the experience turned out to be watching the shop keeper make gelato in a small kitchen at the back of the shop. There was no hands on activity for the adults whatsoever, we just watched. The kids got to put their hands on the mixer with the shop keeper still controlling it. The shop keeper basically did everything using pre prepared mix. We did not get to make our own flavours which was the fun sounding part of this. The choice turned out to be peach or chocolate as this had been pre prepared in the fridge. After watching him make the gelato and explain the process we got to try the peach and chocolate. Once back out in the shop we were allowed to choose one 3 euro ice cream for free. I asked for a coke and he charged me 2 euros. For 3 people we paid almost £180 and got to watch someone make an ice cream and get 9 euros of ice cream for free.
It was as terrible as it sounded, I could not believe what a fool I was to book this! I imagined the ‘academy’ would have individual stations for us all and we would participate in a class where we would all make ice cream using our own equipment, as described in the itinerary. Simply was not the case it’s just the back of a shop. The kids had fun despite all this, but it was just a terrible, terrible waste of money and I have requested a refund.
The whole point was to meet Vetulio Bondi as a renowned expert but he just fobbed us off and said that the other shop would be able to do the tour as good as he could. So what was the point of booking with an expert? He had the nerve to give us his business card and say if we happened to be in town another time feel free to call him.
I would not waste your money on this tour. Better to go to the shop with 200 euros and eat as much ice cream as you can stomach, at least that way you’d get value for money.
A delightfully sweet experience

Who knew something with such complex flavors could be made of such simple ingredients? This gelato making workshop was a delightful treat to the end of our Florence visit. Master gelato extraordinaire Vetulio Bondi is passionate about every ingredient and step that goes into making the perfect cup of gelato. Part history lesson, part hands-on and part eating, Tulio engaged each attendee with his animated storytelling and love for his craft. Highly recommended for families, couples or best friends looking for a mellow activity in a sweet escape!
