chelle_r, Apr 2024
The motels were perfect for travelling with all possible requirements. The tour guide Tim was kind, knowledgeable and great driver. Each day was perfectly timed. The sights were better than expected Even the renowned Tassie weather was great. Highlights were everyday of this 5 day tour. These guys certainly know what there doing and passionate about their home state. A relative good fitness levrl is needed to see tje sights due to the environmental terrain, however they really will try to accomsde IHighly recommend and Tim your awesome 👌

Epic Adventure Around Tasmania!
Helen_A, Apr 2024
This trip was simply amazing! We cannot recommend the tour enough! We feel like we got to see so much (especially loved Cradle Mountain and Freycinet NP). Tour guide Nat was great! Accommodations (motels) were good! And along the way we made new friends! Thank You Nat & Under Down Under! Tasmania is beautiful and we are so happy you shared it with us. We will be back!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
That's wonderful to hear, thank you so much and please do come back! There's always more to see, and many of our places deserve more than one visit - alwasy different in each season (Cradle Mountain especially :)
Great trip highly recommended.
Barry_N, Mar 2024
The trip up cradle mountain was memorable the walks through the national parks was great. Justin , the tour guide and driver from Under Down Under was very knowledgeable and interesting.

Best of Tasmania is the best
Ken_W, Jan 2024
We enjoyed our five day tour around Tasmania. We were on the “clockwise” tour. Tim, our leader, was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable about all things “Tassie” and shared this knowledge appropriately. He was also incredibly patient with the group, never minding if one of us was a little late or asked a question he had just answered. We chose the motel option and our accommodations were more than adequate, comfortable, clean, and accessible. The walks were thoroughly outlined by Tim, usually numerous times and always accurately. Getting meals was never difficult. While it was fairly cold at Cradle Mountain, we all did a number of walks, saw wombats, and had a great visit. Other than that day, the weather was great and we felt quite lucky about that. The bus was comfortable for the most part, although the ac was a bit inconsistent. Tim did a great job moving the group around within the bus so that no one monopolized the front seats.
Fantastic Tour of Amazing Tasmania!
John_J, Nov 2023
This was a great trip and Tasmania is so beautiful. I traveled with my 21-year-old daughter, who is studying at the University of Tasmania. We chose the motel option and found them to range from a little rough but fine (in Strahan) to quite nice (Launceston). Our tour guide, Natalie, was fantastic. She was a great driver, always cheerful, and extremely knowledgeable about everything we saw. I'd highly recommend this tour!
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Hi John, Thanks so much for leaving this review. It's lovely to see families joining the trip - we've had a few lately and it's been great having them along in the groups. Thanks again!
Avoid at all costs
Janice_O, Oct 2023
Excellent tour guide. The tour it’s self is very informative, but, we had paid for a twin room in hostel accommodation, the first night was OK shared kitchen, lounge and bathroom with two other people who had the same deal. The second night in Launceston the people who opted for dormitories a cheaper option were given en-suite bathrooms modern bedrooms in the hostel, our accommodations was terrible with no en-suite only a dirty gents toilet and shower for our own use. Now in Strahan even worse bunk beds, no heating, no storage outside toilets. cost per night $49 per bed. We have had to pay an extra $250 to upgrade to a twin cabin with inside toilet and heating. Our guide Tim couldn’t have been more helpful none of this his fault, but, his boss refuses to discuss the situation and we’re not to be reimbursed for the unused hostel night cost being $196. We have stayed in hostels all over the world travelled on similar holidays but found this to be the poorest.
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Hi Janice, Thanks for your comments. We've been digging a bit deeper to understand some of these issues, and certainly we weren't aware of the full situation in Strahan and feel a better outcome could have been obtained knowing the whole picture. We've communicated with you by email about this. We're very sorry that you were disappointed in the accommodations and wish that your overall Tasmania experience was positive. We hope you can reply to our email as a follow up. Thank you.
A great way to experience Tasmania
Helen_K, Apr 2023
Great trip through the beautiful highways and byways of Tasmania. We traversed the island on an anti-clockwise route and visited beaches, cliffs, rainforests, lakes, rivers and waterfalls, including in national parks. We were active every day, walking , climbing, cruising, swimming and, in Strahan, attending Australia‘a longest-running play. All fitness levels were accommodated by the range of activities available at the different locations. Our guide, Keygan, was excellent. - knowledgeable, informative, encouraging, entertaining, accommodating, organised and good fun. He worked very well with our mixed group. In summary, a great way to experience the wonders of Tasmania in good company.
Response from Host, Jun 2023
Great review of our tour. Thank you Helen.
Best way to experience Tassie!
Lynn_J, Mar 2023
There were 24 of us on a bus pulling a trailer with everyone's luggage. We started with Wombat. Who was very knowledgeabl,. he picked everyone up on time. Our group was a mixture of mostly young singles from all around the world traveling solo. Six of us were over 50 and the youngsters kept us young. We had a ball over the 5 days stopping at beaches, overlooks, waterfalls, farms, parks and waterfronts. We seldom drove more than one hour between stops. The 2nd day Justin replaced Wombat and the real fun began. We laughed, learned and sang our way down the highway seeing wallabys, wombats and birds, stopping and hiking at all these cool places we likely would never have stopped at on our own. Justin made the trip fun, exciting and educational. We paid a bit extra to stay at nice motels while most stayed at hostels. We became a family for a few days and have some new friends and lasting great memories. Never knew Tasmania until this trip. Highly recommend!

Gus the Guide, Bumpy the Backpack manager and twenty diverse characters careening through Tazzie! What could be more enchanting?!?

Thank you. Come again!
wonderful 5days!
Catherine_C, Feb 2022
I had a wonderful time on this trip!. The itinerary was great and gave me a real taste of Tassie. Our guide Gus was just fabulous- he was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. I would recommend this trip to anyone with limited time and a love of the outdoors.
Response from Host, Mar 2022
Thanks Catherine! Wonderful feedback all around. We hope you visit Tasmania again someday.
A Fabulous Experience
Ann_I, May 2021
I can't speak highly enough of this Under Down Under tour, and our guides Tim and Ian. I originally booked the tour because I was unable to hire a car, as it seemed to cover many of the sites that I had planned to visit. I ended up getting so much more, as our guides took us to places of which I was not previously aware, and they explained so much about what I was looking at, that I would not have known had I been driving about by myself. We were in a group of 18, of mixed ages and nationalities, and that enriched the experience even more for me, as I would have been a solo traveller. The highlights were the amazing National Parks ( The Russell and Nelson Falls, Lake St Clair, Cradle Mountain, the Gordon River, The Freycinet National Park, The Bay of Fires and the food (fresh oysters, amazing ice cream). Accommodation was in backpackers' hostels, and we bought our own food, so don't expect five star hotels. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would probably choose to do a tour again in preference to travelling on my own.
Response from Host, Aug 2021
Thank you Ann for such a great review and the feedback on our guides Tim and Ian. As a note to readers, travellers can choose a motel option rather than the hostels, with twin share available at the hostels too if you prefer. All the best, Ann. Cheers.
Loved it!
Melissa_P, Dec 2020
Great tour! Loved the guide, loved the options, loved Tasmania and overall was super happy with the tour.
Response from Host, Jan 2021
Thank you Melissa!
5 days in Tassie
Monika_I, Apr 2020
Everything was perfect. We had a nice group of 24 people and everything went smoothly. The attractions were great. The guide knew a lot about the area. We had a perfect combination of mountains, wildlife and beach experience. The hostels were okay too. Bring warm clothes, it gets quite cold in Tassie. The only thing I didn't enjoy much was The Gordon River Cruise. It was a rainy day and we had to choose either to walk in the rain the whole day or to pay extra for a boat cruise. Maybe it's beautiful on on sunny day, but this wasn't worth to pay any money.
It’s a Backpacker’s Tour!!
Shirley_L, Mar 2020
Booked online based on tour specs in website and opted for single room in motel accommodation. Specs states breakfast provided with the 5 days itinerary. Van transporter was on time for pick ups. The group has 24 pax and was max out in a 24 seater van. For the daily transfers from city to city, it’s pretty uncomfortable squeeze. 22 pax stayed in backpackers hostel while I and another lady choose single motels. Day 1&2 accommodation was unacceptable in cabin type rooms in a caravan park place. Imagine the Tour Guide/Driver tells you for breakfast, find a hole opening at a fence about 100m away and go to the backpackers kitchen for cereals and toast DIY style purchased by the Guide. Luckily Day 3&4 were at proper motels with breakfast provided. As for the tours, expect lots of trekking. Mostly are visits to national parks and lakes to behold nature, floral and fauna. Also went for the optional Gordon River Cruise. Nothing spectacular to me but lunch was good. And everyday, one has to remember to pack their own lunch from the daily supermarket stops. Dinners were at own choice at nearby restaurants near the motels or cook your own at backpackers kitchen. Certainly not my type of holiday tours and NOT value for the money paid.
Response from Host, Mar 2020
Thank you for your review. We are disappointed to know that our tour was not your type of holiday. Our tours are described as being active and nature/adventure-oriented. We visit some incredible places throughout Tasmania and while walks for varying fitness levels are offered at most locations, we can understand why you could have been disappointed if hiking is not your cup of tea. Yes, our multi-day tours include some breakfasts while all other meals are self-catered. This information is clearly stated on the description of our tours and in the FAQ section of our website. Best wishes!

Had the best time this week with an amazing guide, Jacob and tons of new friends! Wonderful itinerary highlighting stunning views in Tasmania! I didn't want it to end! Hostels and food were very nice for the package price and it was well organized
Response from Host, Mar 2020
Many thanks for reviewing us! We are extremely happy to know you had the best time on tour and that you liked our itinerary. Moreover, we are glad you enjoyed Jacob's guidance - he is indeed really good at what he does :) Best wishes!
Definitely the Best of Tasmania
ammapoppi, Feb 2020
Our tour guide, Jess, was amazing. She was a fountain of information on Tassie history as well as the flora and fauna of the island. The tour operator, Under Down Under, was very efficient and customer oriented. With one small exception the tour was on time all the time. We had a short delay in the first hour or so at the start of the tour but the company rectified the situation and made it right by buying everyone dinner the first night. There were two hiking situations and Jess was able to make everyone in our group comfortable in choosing an option suited to their abilities. We were on the 5 day tour and we covered the entire island with the exception of Port Arthur an Bruny Island, which I believe were included in the 7 day version. We would highly recommend this tour.
Response from Host, Feb 2020
Many thanks for reviewing the tour and recommending us! We are happy you had a wonderful time with Jess, she is awesome, and as you mentioned, very passionate about Tassie. In our multi-day tours we will always endevour to give a moderate walking option as well as a more difficult one. We are thrilled to know we lead you to a trail that suited your ability. Hope to see you again soon. Safe travels!
Tasmania bus boat hike
fbliss, Feb 2020
Enjoyed the youthful camaraderie. Ranged from strenuous hiking to mild walks. Boat trip in the roaring 40's (windy latitude), hikes to high points and hostel living was superbly fun.
Response from Host, Feb 2020
Many thanks for your review! We are thrilled to know you enjoyed the camaraderie as for us delivering life-long memories and friendships is a priority. Wilderness in Tassie is pretty amazing and one of the best ways of experiencing it is by hiking. We are happy to know you had fun walking with us. Do come back and experience the roaring 40's again soon. Safe travels!
Cradle Mountain was the best part
Jeffrey_L, Jan 2020
We paid extra for a Double Room. They put us up at the Mews Motel in Launceston because the motel they usually use only had 3 rooms so we were put at the Mews Motel. Worst hotel we ever stayed at. There was mold on the ceiling in the bathroom. I took a photo and can prove it. Phil was just Ok as a guide. He found humor in the fact that we lost a Japanese gal at the park and had to spend 40 mins looking for her. Van was super tight and uncomfortable. If I ever do a tour again I would only do 3 days not 5.
Response from Host, Jan 2020
Thank you for your comments and we’re glad that you enjoyed Cradle Mountain. Please be advised that we have immediately advised the hotel about the mould. We know they will be keen to resolve that as quickly as possible. Regarding the situation with Japanese guest who took an alternative trail in Freycinet National Park, on behalf of our guide we would like to apologise that you interpreted his behaviour as finding humour at the guest not showing up when expected. We wish to assure you that the safety of our guests is our number one priority at all times, and we have clear procedures in place to follow if we have genuine concern for the welfare of our guests. Thanks again, and we wish you all the best for your future travels.
Awesome tour group and guide
