What To Expect

Make your own way to the Tate Britain in central London and meet your private, art historian guide.

The recently revamped gallery contains the national collection of British art from the 16th century, with works by Constable, Gainsborough, Whistler, Hogarth and more, including contemporary painters. It’s also home to the world’s largest collection by JMW Turner, Britain’s greatest 19th-century landscape painter.

Head inside and view the main highlights. Admire works by artists such as Hogarth, Rossetti, Hockney and Bacon, among others, and explore the Turner collection of 300 works the artist bequeathed to the nation, including masterpieces such as Norham Castle, Sunrise and Rome, from the Vatican.

Afterward, take a boat trip along the Thames River. Soak up views of London landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge, and alight on the South Bank at Tate Modern, converted from the Bankside Power Station in the 1990s.

Ogle the spectacular Turbine Hall and other spaces of this once-industrial building, and take in seminal pieces by greats such as Warhol, Picasso, Cezanne and Rothko as your guide explains their meanings and backstories.

At both galleries, your guide can customize your tour to suit your personal interests, and will share their expert perspective on what you see. List any personal interests you have (such as particular artists, periods or styles) when you book so your guide can prepare for your tour.

After your tour, say goodbye to your guide at the Tate Modern and either continue to explore the gallery independently or leave and continue your day in London.

So much to see…too little time.
MaryLynn_P, Feb 2024
Our guide Mark provided a wealth of knowledge as we made our way through each museum. He expertly navigated us through the most important pieces in each gallery. However, 3 hours is not enough time to fully experience and appreciate these 2 museums. We felt rushed as we sprinted through this tour. I would advise making this 2 separate trips for a more engaging experience.
Our Tour With Mark Was Outstanding
Raymond_S, Jun 2023
Mark was an extremely knowledgeable guide and an art expert. I cannot say enough good things about Mark's ability to bring both Tate Museums to life. If you are going to the Tates, make sure you get Mark. You will not be disappointed.

Dear Mr Arnold, I wish to thank you, also on behalf of Mark to whom I copied your review, for your splendid comments. We are delighted to see how you enjoyed the tour and Mark found you a fascinating client. Thanks a lot Rosa Maria Letts
IT WAS FINE, BUT..
Victoralfredo R, Jan 2020
Our guide Ana María was fine. Was on time. Was very friendly and professional. But (but) we couldn't help to leave with the feeling that all she knew about the Tate Galleries was strictly the 12 or 15 pieces she showed us in both Galleries. She just basically told us literally what it was already written in the ID stuck on the wall next to every piece of art. Every time I asked about some other piece or some other space of the Galleries, she would answer (that, I don't know about). At least she was honest :)...but you would definitely expect more from a 4 hour private $550 tour. My recommendation, hire some other tour (there are plenty in Viator).

Dear Friend your comment is obviously apt and specific and a very informative review for us, the employer. We were please that we were able to supply n another guide for the British Museum Tour you did after. The language sometimes creates for us some problems since we do not know the other language speaking guides as well as the english historian we normally use.Thank you for your review. Anthony Letts

Our guide, Paul, was very knowledgeable and gave us much insight into the paintings, artists and events occurring in history at the time of the paintings. He also gave us recommendations to find more info on our favorite artists. I highly recommend this tour and Paul. It was fun, educational and very thorough.

I paid a lot of money for this tour. I expected a minimum of 2 hours at easy museum not including transporting from one to another. It was marketed as all day. But it was only 3 hours in total.

Marguerite was an excellent guide. I felt both Tate's were inferior to the National Gallery and next time will just go there. The Turner's were superb.
