What To Expect

Your guide will collect you from your hotel or train station to kick off this Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii day trip from Naples. Venture into the ancient Roman city of Pompeii on a half-hour coach ride and learn the history behind the area that was infamously covered by ash nearly 2000 years ago.

Follow your guide on a walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed site and learn about Europe’s largest archeological grounds. Stop at the Forum, Thermal Baths, Vetti’s House and the Lupanare brothel. Your guide will offer historical context and insight into local life here back in 79 AD. Once you’ve explored the grounds, savor an Italian pizza lunch with your group before enjoying time to wander the shops.

Afterward, travel by air-conditioned coach to Mt Vesuvius and journey on a moderate hike to the top of the active volcano with your guide. At the summit, some 3,900 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level, take in panoramic views of the Bay of Naples. Roam around the volcano's mammoth crater and keep an eye out for plumes of escaping steam. If you prefer to skip the hike, you'll enjoy free time while waiting for the group, but the trip to the top is definitely worth the effort.

After successfully climbing the top of Mt Vesuvius, relax with a ride back to your Naples hotel or back to the port in your comfortable coach.

Pompeii good, the rest disappointing

The guide in Pompeii was excellent. However, some elements of the tour were not so good. Some people got left behind at one of the pickups which caused a big delay. And the restaurant staff at lunch were super rude. Clearly as part of a group we were second class citizens and it was difficult to order extras with no choices. Our tour guide was not available to us.

Efficient and fun day trip

We left Naples at about 10 a.m. to drive to Pompeii. There are many languages offered by this company so we were accompanied by Spanish speakers for the drive. Our guide for the drive spoke both Spanish and English. We had a different guide once we reached Pompeii who was very knowledgeable and made the tour of Pompeii interactive and fun. We spent about two hours in Pompeii seeing the ruins. We got about an hour for lunch at the local restaurant before taking a bus to Vesuvius. We had about 90 minutes to hike Vesuvius (20 minutes each way for experienced hikers) and see the views which was more than enough time for us. There are little shops up the volcano that serve beer, wine, coffee, and snacks. We arrived back in Naples around 6 p.m. Each activity took the right amount of time for us, so I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who doesn't want to spend more than a couple hours at each place.

This was not the best experience. I was suppose to be on an English speaking tour and the house in Pompeii was not very clear in his English. I expected a better English speaking guide. I know you guys can’t controls the weather but it rained at Mount Vesuvius and was so foggy you could not even see the crater. I was disappointed in this one.

Great day out. Picked up round the corner from hotel and taken to pompei promptly. Clear instructions re the itinerary and we had a great guide around the ruins. A decent sized margarita pizza and drink included in a nice restaurant followed by a second bus trip to vesuvius. There was a 25 min walk to the top and same down and we was given an hour amd 15 mins to do this which was enough because it was cloudy at the top but would probably like longer if it would have been a nicer day. Overall would recommend

This was a wonderful day! Our guide was so sweet and knowledgeable. I enjoyed hearing different stories about Pompeii. We had a wonderful lunch (which was included) and then we conquered Mt. Vesuvious!!

Everything was wonderful. We had a great time. The pizza was good. There were a lot of people. It was hard to stay with your group if you were not right next to guide. Once we lost her we went on our own.

Pompeii itself was fascinating. The tour guide was not great - not up to standard as other Viator guides we have had in the past. She rambled on about a lot of information we did not recall afterwards ( too much meaningless information) and did not show us everything she could have done at the site. We were shunted around in a rush and her English was not great. The lunch was mediocre at best and we were too long there not leaving enough time to climb to the Crater at Vesuvius. Less time around tourist salespeople at Pompeii would have left more time to get up to the top. Being in our mid sixties, we therefore had to abandon that. Shame.

Definitely worth visiting, but I'd arrange things myself, especially for Pompeii.

Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius were amazing. However I felt that we missed out on a lot at Pompeii and in hindsight wish I'd not booked a tour. 2 hours is definitely not long enough. I don't think it was helped by our guide. She would talk about things before we were there. We even went into what was a room and she was talking about the last room before we even got in there. The lunch that was included in our trip was good. Mt Vesuvius was good, but again we could have done with more time there.

Ruined by the rain

I really wish I could remember our guides name, she was awesome and thankfully had a wide range of knowledge to add flavor and depth to what we were seeing at the ruins. I had no idea the Pompeii ruins we so large and so advanced. The second part of our trip was basically a wash out, it was very cloudy and rained all the way up the mountain. We tried to climb the mountain but ran out of time, motivation and traction because of the mud. I think we got close to the top but we couldn't see 20 feet in front of us, so there was no view and no payoff for a hike in the rain. As my wife says "That just means we have to come back"

The Pompeii part of the tour was very good. Pompeii guide was excellent and knowledgeable. Walking up the Vesuvius was interesting, but rather disorganised. The mountain also became foggy, with resulting poor visibility. The lunch was way below standard, very poor quality food basically inedible. Service also below par. Suggest change provider or use lunch bags. Communication from the operator to the client also poor. Vague pickup instructions “in front of X Hotel”, and no reminder the day before the tour. I would recommend using “pick up in front of X Hotel by black minibus marked Vesuvius Trips” - saving the client the ire of the hotel front desk.

My husband and I enjoyed this tour our tour guide in Pompeii was amazing he was very knowledgeable and took us to the most important areas in Pompeii. Unfortunately Mt. Vesuvius was closed due to a land slide but we were still able to have lunch with a breath taking view as well as our entry tickets were refunded.

Our tour was wonderful. I wouldn't go to Pompeii without a tour guide. She took us to all the spots and navagated the crowds very efficiently. The lunch was good but the pizza was the poor mans version of what the regular restaurant patrons received. It had no meat or Basil on it. Mt Vesuvius was a bit dissappointing because the weather turned bad and we had lots of clouds and rain come in. We opted not to hike to the rim of the volcano. A note about Mt Vesuvius. Its full of litter and trashy souvenier stands. The bathrooms are only available in a little run down store and you have to buy something to use them. The owner tried to get my husband to buy a $20 bottle of alcohol to use the bathroom.

Great tour. We really needed more time at Mt. Vesuvius. Folks did not have time to get to the end of the trail and get back without power walking, which is not a reasonable option on the steep inclines.
