Gummi is a fantastic guide. He drove well despite the bas weather and showed us so many beautiful points that were not part of the itenary without any hurry. Highly recommended tour with beautiful glacier views.

Just the best day !
kim_d, Dec 2023
We knew this was going to be a very long day because we had read the itinerary. If you aren't up to sitting on a long bus journey, its not for you . However, if you want the best day out ever, it's really worth the journey. We struck lucky in getting Gummi as our driver /guide. We'd already been out with him on the Golden circle tour, so knew we would have another great day. Whilst he changed his tyres on the mini bus, he treated our group to hot chocolates or coffees ....a nice start. We then set off ... his knowledge is wonderful, along with his great stories, its really unbelievable how much he knows. After a couple of stops/ bathroom or food, we reached Vik. Great photo opportunity by the church and we were so lucky to spot a glow cloud. Actually further down the road we saw another one, so again Gummi stopped for us. We then admired the stunning scenery with commentary explaining the flood plains and lava fields. We stopped at a beautiful waterfall , plenty of photos in a beautiful setting. We finally reached the glacier lagoon around 2pm. The sun was beginning to go down which meant it was the perfect time of day. Its truly an amazing place. The pictures don't do it justice....you have to experience it. We were given plenty of time to walk around, take pictures and eat. We were told the fish and chip van sold the best ones around....so we decided to try. Really, they were the best ! We then crossed the road to the diamond beach. Its spectacular....especially at sunset. Again, plenty of time there. On the way back as there was still a bit of daylight, Gummi said he had a treat for us. He went off the road and we ended up at a glacier lake. The sight in front of us was just incredible especially at dusk. It certainly was a treat. The final stop was the little church, beautiful, then the waterfall, which was lit up. We had another food break, then time to return to Reykjavik. However, we were asked if we'd like to go to a high point to try and see the glow from the volcano which had erupted the night before. The night wasn't very clear, but you could actually see the red glow in the distance. It was a nice touch to end the day. Gummi made this trip, nothing was too much trouble and he was so kind. Always allowing time to to take pictures or checking we were OK for breaks etc.we are so glad we chose this small group tour and cannot reccomend it highly enough. If you are very lucky, you will have Gummi, if so, you're in for a wonderful day .

Would definitely recommend
rachael_c, Nov 2023
Absolutely amazing! Yes it's a long day but there are so many different things to see on this tour and the tour guide Ian was very knowledgeable and shared facts about Iceland whilst driving. I went on this solo and felt comfortable, would definitely recommend!
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Hello Rachel, we are very happy to hear that you enjoyed our tour on your own and we could be a part of your Icelandic experience. Enjoy the rest of your stay!
Iceland in October
CANDACE_L, Oct 2023
Our trip was on a very windy, cloudy October day that started off with snow as we left Reykjavik. The weather was treacherous and other agencies had cancelled tours for the day. Our guide Ian did an amazing job of keeping us safe, providing a history listen on the sights we were visiting, and even making the tough decision to turn around when the winds reached dangerous levels. Best of all he remained calm and found other sites for us to visit. I can honestly say the day is a memorable experience and a positive one thanks to Ian!
Response from Host, Oct 2023
Thank you for your lovely review, Ian is one of our most experienced guide. We are glad you enjoyed your day with us

Well Worth the Visit
ConeyPatterson, Jul 2023
A long trip (16 hours) there and back but totally worth it. Our guide, Trond, was a wealth of information and very respectful of the small groups' needs. We got lots of notification for comfort breaks and he even squeezed in a surprise stop to see a glacier off the beaten tourist path. Highly recommend doing in summer to take advantage of the long daylight hours.
Response from Host, Jul 2023
Thank you for taking the time to write this review and delighted you had such a good day with Trond. I'm pleased you were happy with the information provided and felt your needs were met. Thank you for the recommendation, it is always a pleasure to show off this country, especially with the added bonus of the extended daylight in summer.
Jokulsarlon in a day from Reykjavik
Jaydev_D, Jul 2023
We were a group of 7 adults and 2 kids. The trip takes about 16 hours with all the sightseeing stops, restroom breaks and food breaks. There were other 6 adults in the minibus. Everyone was comfortable. Our driver informed us that they normally don't count on the last-row seats for passengers because there are no windows - which is very considerate. The trip was completely worth it, especially because we did not get any reasonable hotel accommodation in Vik or around due to the timing of our trip. The tour operator communicated with us about all the details including the requirement of carseats for kids (which we carried with us - otherwise they may have provided that). Next our tour guide (also the driver), communicated with us the day before to co-ordinate pickup, etc. Given we were a big group, they picked us up directly from our accommodation in Gardabaer. Our tour guide, Trond, was knowledgeable and explained everything with Icelandic humor sprinkled in, including a song towards the end - sign for having done enough for the day. The rest stops were planned keeping everyone in mind. There was enough time provided at each sightseeing stop with no rush at all. Locations covered included: black sand beach, Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, diamond beach, Fjadrargljufur canyon, Seljalandsfoss, other small waterfalls and the last turf church. Trond improvised, in that, if there seemed to be a location too crowded, he made a stop at it during the return trip (but with no rush at all). Overall, a memorable and tiring trip with most of the south-Iceland sightseeing locations packed in one-day, but absolutely worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to write us your review We are glad you had a good time with Trond, he is a wonderful guide. Hope you had a good time for the rest of your trip to Iceland
Sights beyond belief
Malcolm_L, Mar 2023
The whole trip of some 16 hours was a truly outstanding experience. The guide/driver owner "Gummy" related to us information regarding each sight we visited and advised us of the culture and heritage of the Icelandic people. Cannot recommend this company too much. Would book every excursion with them again.
Response from Host, Mar 2023
Thank you for taking the time to write us a review We really appreciate it. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour with Gummi he is a great guide Hope to see you again
Forget about making a dinner reservation…

If there’s one trip you should do whilst in Iceland it’s this one. I would have no hesitation to recommend the tour company ‘Gateway to Iceland’ - both the office staff and the tour guide were exceptional. It’s a long day - under normal circumstances you’d be out for over 12 hours hence the title of this review (ours was 18 but did include a coach breakdown which I have to say was handled as effectively as possible given we broke down 4 1/2 hours drive from Reykjavik literally in the middle of nowhere). We were picked up early (7:30am) by ‘Gummi’ not his real name purely a nickname but much easier to remember and pronounce than his true Icelandic name (yes less that 24 hours later I can’t remember it let alone pronounce it!) He was an excellent host - along the trip we were introduced to facts and fables of both modern and old Norse Iceland. His knowledge was vast and personal anecdotes added to the facts and figures discussed with the group. We first stopped at Skogafoss where we got very wet (self inflicted by taking photos next to such a fabulous waterfall). Probably through experience Gummi managed to get us there before the tour buses meaning we had the place almost to ourselves. From there we travelled to Vik where we had the opportunity to see the Black Sand Beach as well as the Troll Rocks. This also was an opportunity to grab some very tasty food in the well appointed cafe/ supermarket/gift shop complex. From there we travelled to Glacier Lagoon stopping on the way for comfort breaks as well as photo opportunities that presented themselves. Throughout the journey Gummi described the history of the particular area we were travelling through as well as pointing out the various volcanoes, lava flows and glaciers that had transformed the landscape over time. Glacier Lagoon was mainly frozen over so no chance of seeing ice carving from the glacier but there were a few large bergs in the water and the scenery surrounding the glacier lake was absolutely fabulous. On the lake were Eider Ducks and my wife also spotted a seal (although it did apparently look a bit like a Labrador has just popped it’s head above water) Next was the short hop down to ‘Diamond Beach’ - again due to the season there wasn’t many large bergs on the beach but there were still ample ‘instagramable opportunities’ We then started our journey back towards Reykjavik - after passing a minor road collision between a couple of cars (the road was covered in ice and snow) I commented what a place to have an accident or breakdown being so far from help. Little was I to know that we too were shortly to experience the trauma of being so far from ‘civilisation’. I won’t bore you with the detail but suffice to say we all got back safely albeit circa four hours after the time we believed we’d be back at our hotel. Unforeseen delay aside I have to say that this is one of the best value tours I have taken both in time, sights and commentary and highly suggest it is one you consider if you want to see and experience the real Iceland . Everyone has their own personal preferences but for me this means to see nature at its finest not simply go to the self proclaimed wonder of Iceland that is the Blue Lagoon for a hot bath. Thanks again to Gummi and all the staff for helping my wife and I have a memorable tour.
Response from Host, Feb 2023
Thank you for writing such a detailed and heartfelt review, everyone at GTIce is truly grateful for your kind words and Gummi (Guðmundur) is a fantastic guide, a font of knowledge and always handles any situation in a calm, professional manner. It is rare for a bus to break down but I'm glad you appreciated everything Gummi did to make sure everyone got back safely and as quickly as possible. It is so nice to read such praise for our tour and you and your wife would be welcomed back any time. We hope you had an enjoyable stay in Iceland.
Wonderful

Sights to take your breath away
Lydia_D, Jun 2022
The Glacier Lagoon was spectacular! A 'wow' moment I will remember forever. The day was very long due to the distance of the lagoon from Reykjavik where we were staying. It was advertised as a 14 hour trip but was in fact 16 hours. We had several other stops to waterfalls, an ancient church and glacial lakes. Lots of interesting facts and stories from our expert guide. A truly magical trip.
Response from Host, Jun 2022
Thank you very much for your wonderful reply. We are delighted that this tour was magical for you. We are very happy to create wonderful memories for you. Thank you again for the guide.
Just do it! Take this tour - you won’t regret!
Tonica_R, Dec 2021
Very best tour of our trip to Iceland!! Made our trip worthwhile! The small group was ideal and absolutely worth the money! It was a value and our guide / owner was so knowledgeable and unplanned stopped twice back to Rejkavik to see the Northern Lights - not even part of all our stop- dining was delightful. It was a 15 hour day and there were lots of stops along the way short bathroom breaks and long breathtaking opportunities. Again this day was the best of our entire trip - made it for us!
Response from Host, Dec 2021
Thanks for your review! We're glad you enjoyed the sites and the bonus stops on the long tour. We hope the rest of your travels in Iceland are just as great!
Best tour of the trip!
Olga_P, Jun 2021
Amazing trip!! Ian was a perfect tour guide - showed us a bunch of secret spots, had perfect recommendations, and when diamond beach had no diamonds found another secret lagoon for us. Super long day (didn’t get back to hotel till11) but SO WORTH IT.
Response from Host, Jun 2021
Hello Olga, Thank you for your review. We are very happy you enjoyed the tour. We wish you well. I´ll pass this on to Ian.
Amazing day out
Alina O, Dec 2019
Do yourself a favor and book this trip to the Glacier Lagoon! The trip was amazing and very well organized. Stefan the guide was very professional, knowledgeable and communicative. We had to drive back to the capital in extreme conditions and Stefan has done an amazing job driving. The Gateway to Iceland is one of the two the best travel companies we used in Iceland. We will definitely use their services in the future when we will be back to the land of fire and ice! Thank you a lot!
The BEST Iceland Tour to the South Coast !!
julie_h, Nov 2019
This was a long 14 hour day, but the time flew by as our amazing tour guide Gummi drove us and regaled us with fascinating stories, he was incredibly knowledgeable. The tour itself was everything it advertises to be plus much more, dont be put off by the ling day as we stopped frequently for refreshments and bathroom breaks and to see extra things not on the itinerary. The Glacier Lagoon was stunning!! We had the opportunity to do the boat ride, unusual for this time of year, but it was quite expensive and extremely cold and snowy so we decided not to go on the boat. This was the only tour we found that went to the Canyon & the little church, both beautiful in their own way and well worth the visit. If you only book 1 tour in Iceland, book this one, you wont regret it !!
Long tour but worth it, even in pelting sleet
Aimee_T, Oct 2019
We had booked other day tours and this was the second out of the three. It was the BEST tour, especially in regards to our wonderful guide, Ian. He kept a 14-hour tour in bad weather, upbeat and entertaining with many stories and historical facts about Iceland. Our last tour during our vacation was with another company and I kept saying about that guide "He's no Ian". The stops are great, my only complaint is that the one stop I was most excited about - the waterfall you can walk behind - was our last one of the night. In the dark. In the rain. Now, no one can control the weather, but I was surprised we didn't see this one earlier in the day. But I trust Ian had his reasons. Diamond Beach is impressive, Glacier Lagoon is cool. The canyon is AMAZING. Do this tour. You won't regret it. I will hope for you that you have better weather. You will stop at places for food and snacks, which was great as we weren't sure what to expect. We had winds, rain, and sleet that were shuffling our shuttle all over the road, but my new super hero, Ian, did a great job navigating it all. He kept us safe, and I will tell you that I was scared at many points because the wind was vicious. You will get back to your hotel around 11PM. Overall it's a great day!
Best marathon day ever
William_P, Jun 2019
Ian picked us up at 7:30 am and dropped us at our hotel at 11:30 p.m. He willingly gave the group as much time as we agreed that we wanted at the big stops and squeezed in places that were not on the itinerary. It was an unbelievable trip and we learned so much about the formation of the terrain as we rode along. Nothing else we saw in four days compared to the Glacier Lagoon. Such a very different trip from the Golden Circle. Do both if you have time...just plan an easy day after this trip. Hopefully you'll get to travel with Ian!
