What To Expect

Your tour begins at the National Roman Museum–Palazzo Massimo alle Terme ticket office, located only a few steps away from Republic Square. Here, you’ll greet your guide, collect your skip-the-line ticket, and bypass the lines that snake around the museum’s entrance.

Alongside commentary that details Rome’s artistic heritage, you’ll admire perfectly preserved mosaics, ancient coins, jewels, and notable sculptures depicting a ‘Boxer at Rest, a ‘Discus Thrower’, and a ‘Sleeping Hermaphrodite’. See, too, the extravagantly decorated rooms that belonged to Empress Livia, and gain a comprehensive overview of classic Roman art’s rich panorama. Then, if you’ve upgraded to include a tour of the Baths of Diocletian, you’ll proceed to what was once the most luxurious bathhouse in ancient Rome.

Immerse yourself in the sacred atmosphere of Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, incorporated into the bathhouse by Michealangelo in 1561, and learn about Roman social traditions. Following three hours of enrichment, bid your guide farewell at the Baths of Diocletian.

Best museum in Italy

Absolutely brilliant our guide was incredible and this is the greatest museum in the world - it should be packed but it’s not - I want to go again and again
Excellent tour. Mattia is an excellent guide
John_S, Oct 2023
Mattia is an excellent tour guide who has mastered not only the basics of guiding but all the chances and details that add life to the statues and context the the frescos and mosaics he was showing us. He set an appropriate pace, even with my time-consuming picture taking. He even captured the interest of my wife who isn’t into Ancient Rome and had graciously indulged me. Matt is speaks excellent English. The tour was worth every penny.
Great guide

The tour guide, Matteo(sp?), was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Roman era art. Could not have been a better guide.
So many layers of history!
Daniel_M, Sep 2023
Serena fascinated us with her detailed knowledge of the history and architecture contained in the museum exhibits. She was also able to tie that information to contemporary aspects of life in Rome. The tour was thoroughly enjoyable and we are happy we chose this method for visiting the museum. We would enthusiastically recommend Serena.
Fantastic tour. Highly recommend.

We loved this tour and the guide was amazing. He explained everything with tons of enthusiasm. I learned a ton. Highly recommend. The National Museum has the incredible frescoes, mosaics, and some incredible statues from Roman times. It makes it much easier to appreciate the surrounding ruins after seeing these amazing works of Roman art. I was also blown away by the Thermal baths that Michelangelo repurposed as a church. Our guide explained so well all the architectural features of the bath that are incorporated into the church. Really stunning. Highly recommend this tour. Also, the museum isn't crowded at all. Very pleasant to enjoy the art in a more peaceful way without getting jostled every other second.
Good

Georgio did a great job. I highly recommend him. The mosaics and frescos were impressive. There were lots of statues, impressive, but not my thing. Thus the 4 stars rather than 5.

This was one of my favorite things that we did for a few reasons. It was incredibly interesting to see all the different works of art and soak in the history, but it was even better because our guide was passionate about the subject matter. He talked about the different stories or legends and additional insights and explained the various pieces and it truly felt like VIP service.

Highly recommend. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable. We were surprised by how immense the complex and buildings were. The baths must have been unrivaled in the world in their time. Our tour guide pointed out floor mosaics, frescoes, and awe-inspiring sculptures and provided historical context for our understanding. We loved Michelangelo's Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels the he incorporated into the bathhouse in 1561. This was a great tour!

My fiance and I had a phenomenal time on this tour. I don't recall the tour guides name but he was a tall, younger Italian guy. He knew so much about all of the sculptures and even gave us other stories of how they came together. I highly recommend this tour!
I would certainly go on this tour...

I would certainly go on this tour. You will be amazed at all the artifacts and frescoes and intact flooring that is here. That is just the beginning. There is so much to see and whomever your guide is will be fantastic as the other Viator guides we had on other tours were. I also was in awe of all the statues. Wow! Go on this tour!

My wife and I toured the National Roman Museum through Viator. We had a private tour with Damiano. He was fantastic. We were in Rome and Greece for 2 weeks, and had multiple guided tours, and Damiano was the best tour guide we had though we had many good guides. He is an expert in the field, and loves his subject. He works at a University in Art. He brought the museum and its exhibits alive for us. We highly recommend him and this tour. We saw Roman and Greek sculptures, Roman mosaics and Roman frescoes. The museum and this tour were amazing.
