What To Expect

Then head over to Piazza del Campo, the seashell-shaped space that has been the public living room of locals for centuries. Admire the Fonte Gaia, Fountain of the World, built in 1419; look up at the tall campanile, attached to the 14th-century Palazzo Pubblico.

After some time, move on from the square and head to the Siena Duomo, one of the most awe-inspiring cathedrals in Europe. Take in the black-and-white-striped facade and then breeze right inside thanks to your skip-the-line ticket. Inside, let your guide lead you around, revealing priceless works of art by Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo. Take in the Gothic interior of the cathedral, along with Renaissance-era busts of pope and emperors.

Siena come to life! (Siena walking tour)

Elio was hands down the absolute best guide we have ever had on any tour we have taken! He was so knowledgeable of the places we saw and visited, and was a wonderful story teller! He had the best personality and we completely enjoyed our time with him! He even gave recommendations for other things to do after our tour was complete. It was easy to recognize his passion for art, history and where he lives which made the experience even better! Thank you, thank you Elio! Grazie mille!!!!
Excellent walking tour

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided just the right mix of history and culture to give us perspectives of SIena. This was particularly interesting in light of previously touring Florence. We did not have more than a day to spend in Siena, but would want to explore the city in more depth on a future trip. The tour was a very efficient and enjoyable way to learn about the city in a short amount of time.
Great start to a visit to Siena

Loved learning about the history of Siena! Agree with others that it’s a great way to begin a visit to the region. Our tour guide pointed out intriguing details it was fun to notice later on our own.

Great way to learn about the city

Claudia was an excellent tour guide as we walked through the city of Siena. As a native, she has not just the history but the actual experience of what living here is like. She shared the traditions along with the history that is so much a part of this city. I wouldn't miss this tour.
Excellent short tour

This was a great tour. It was short, just 2 hours but the highlight was getting a tour of the inside of the Duomo. So stunning. Our guide also spent a good amount of time explaining the Palio—the horse race held in Il Campo piazza every July/August.
Walking wonder

A Great Guide Opens Our Eyes
Jane_S, Oct 2023
I could natter away endlessly about Siena itself, but this post is a shout-out to our guide. Her name is Elena (I hope!), and I suspect I have the spelling wrong. This was my third visit to this lovely city. Because I have been here with different friends/family each time, this was also my third tour. Elena was fantastic: welcoming, witty, smart, compelling, funny, and more. At one point she connected her explanation of one of the Duomo's marble inlay works of art in the floor to a story of her little son and the quest for knowledge. Charming. (Note: She is a real professional, and this was the only personal comment she made.) Finally, even if you aren't lucky enough to connect with our guide, don't "do" Siena your first time on your own. The history and the stories of the neighborhood contrade and the Palio are captivating, and the architecture is wonderful. But the Duoma is AMAZING. If I had been alone on my first - or second or third - visit to this cathedral, I would have just wandered around, amazed but unseeing. A good guide will open your eyes. Elena is a GREAT guide.
Missed the tour time

I wish I had the experience to review! Unfortunately, due to issues with public transportation (taxis) in Florence, we were delayed in securing our rental for Sienna. I contacted Viator both my email and directly by phone before the tour, but clearly after the cancellation period had passed. I had hoped to apply the funds toward another Viator experience. Still awaiting some sort of feedback. This survey request is the first communication since my request for consideration was noted by your representative. Thank you.

Of course our guide was extremely knowledgable . However, I think he delayed in some places too long and didn't read his group.
What a race!!

Our guide was fabulous. She was funny, bright, and had a lot of energy. We Americans who don’t know world history we’re fascinated to learn about the Palio race and all the Contrades. Never knew it existed. And of course the Duomo. Who knew some Popes were…
Excellent tour.

David bought Pisa to life for us. It’s not all about the Leaning Bell Tower. Very interesting and extremely entertaining.
