We begin with visits to families producing Pottery of the many varieties of color the region produces, where you will gain an insight not only into the raw ingredients and techniques used, but also the different motivations that inspire this work and the demand from the markets that shape their production. Then, you are in for a true feast for the senses, the Alebrijes studio that inspired worldwide exhibitions and the creators of the Disney movie ‘Coco’. We will be guided through each stage of production, beginning with sourcing the timber & pigments from nature, to the intricate painting of the finished sculpture. Lunch is a delight, with a magnificent spread of local cuisine on offer and cooked to perfection. After which we proceed to the distillery of one of Oaxaca’s pioneering producers of Mezcal. Not only does it stand out for the quality of liquor that is produced, the whole production is based around an organic and sustainable production method.

Hello! We are Karina and Fernando, a very Oaxacan couple who seeks to share with you our pride in the crafts of our beautiful state. In this experience you will learn and create your own craft. We will take you to the first artisan town, San Antonino Castillo Velasco, famous for its beautiful hand-embroidered textiles and a place where you can learn and embroider a small detail that you can take with you. Later we will visit San Martín Tilcajete, a place recognized for its Alebrijes and where you will have the opportunity to learn about the entire process to achieve these unique pieces. Here you can paint your Alebrije. And finally San Bartolo Coyotepec, the cradle of black clay. Here we will learn the process and elaboration of these beautiful crafts, in which we will participate to create and design a unique piece in the world. We want you to take not only a great experience and a piece of Oaxaca with you.

Return to the Vicente family workshop, which becomes your home base for a low-key day of learning about and exploring the unique customs and craft of Tomas’s Zapotec village. Visit the open air market, cook lunch with Sylvia and Pilar, then in the afternoon explore the streets, local cathedral, community museums and other weaving workshops on your own or with a guide, as you wish.

These more informal celebrations of the Guelaguetza probably bear more resemblance to the way the festival was originally celebrated. This is not so much a show, but a time for people to come together and enjoy one another’s presence, their culture and food. The Guelaguetza lasts for several hours and here people come and go throughout the presentation. The Guelaguetza is a festival of music, costumes, dances, and food, but it’s also a celebration of the mutual interdependence of people within a community. It’s a moment when Oaxacan culture can be appreciated at its best.
