Prepare for your new arrival with a couple’s getaway to relax and recharge.

Hi, I'm Rebecca!

Rebecca’s first visit to Italy was a coup de foudre and her affection for Il Bel Paese has only grown over almost 30 years of living here, during which time she has mastered the art of navigating the sampietrini cobblestones in heels but has yet to come away from a plate of bucatini all’amatriciana with an unsullied blouse. She covers Italy travel, culture, and cuisine for a number of print and online publications.

Whether you’re expecting your first or your fourth little one, the arrival of a new baby is a momentous occasion in every couple’s life. Step away from the whirl of newborn prep and focus on each other to gear up for the next few months of joy (and sleeplessness) with a babymoon trip. Here are a few easy-to-reach destinations for a final pre-baby getaway to bond with your sweetheart, including relaxation, city sightseeing, soft adventure, or a combination of all three.

1. Puerta Vallarta, Mexico

The perfect balance of beach time and gentle water sports just south of the border.

Set on Mexico’s Pacific coastline, this colorful resort town isn’t as party-focused as other Mexican hot sports like Cancun or Acapulco. Known for its endless stretch of sandy beach backed by lush peaks, a vibrant cultural scene, and unbeatable cuisine, Puerta Vallarta is also particularly welcoming to expecting LGBTQ+ couples.

Bask your days away in the sun, then set sail at sunset for a romantic mini cruise or join an easy snorkeling and whale-watching expedition. Landlubbing parents-to-be can explore the local botanical gardens, shop for handmade arts and crafts, and tuck into authentic local dishes. Adult glam at the northern Italian lake an hour from Milan’s international airports.

Don’t waste time on tiring logistics with a quick jaunt to Lake Como. Thanks to its luxury hotels, spectacular views, and fairytale-like villages, this Alpine lake seems worlds away, but direct flights to Milan, plus a quick drive north, make it easy to reach even from across the Atlantic. Ideal for soon-to-be parents who want to soak in a bit of Italian flair before the arrival of their little one, the lake offers cruises on a chic water limousine, dining overlooking the sparkling waters, and leisurely tours of the historic villas and gardens dotting the shoreline.

3. Key West, Florida, US

White-sand beaches and tropical vibes without an international flight.

If you want to unwind during your final pre-baby stretch on a palm tree-covered island without straying too far afield, the Florida Keys check all the right boxes. Enjoy the perks of tropical life by driving south on US Route 1 directly to Key West, the southernmost city in the continental US, and a balmy yet accessible retreat during the coldest months of the year.

Relax on the beach, snorkel or kayak through the crystalline waters of the gulf, hop on a sailboat to visit the outlying islets, and browse the colorful shops along Duval Street while avoiding the hassle and risks of air travel.

4. Montreal, Canada

International culture and cuisine within the confines of North America.

Enjoy the historical splendor and unforgettable cuisine of a multicultural city without having to cross the Atlantic by visiting Montreal, one of the most storied and culturally rich spots on the North American continent.

Wander the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal), vibrant Chinatown, and bustling Little Italy. Then, take in the views from the top of the city’s Ferris wheel, the highest in Canada (closed, climate-controlled gondolas ensure you stay comfy regardless of the season). Finally, be sure to eat for two at the city’s many renowned international dining spots.

5. Cape Cod, Massachusetts, US

New England charm for a postcard-perfect retreat from spring through fall.

Capture the magic of your babymoon against the backdrop of some of the most picturesque corners of New England in Cape Cod, the pretty peninsula that lines the southeastern tip of Massachusetts. Lined with flower-filled historic towns, quaint beaches, and lush woods that explode with color come fall, this coastal resort is ideal for a private pregnancy photoshoot. Plan to explore the adorable towns of Provincetown, Chatham, and Hyannis (to name just three), feasting on lobster rolls and fried clams. Or, just relax on the beach with a sunset picnic.

6. Aruba, Leeward Antilles

The island offers year-round sun for a beach babymoon in any season.

Located safely outside of Hurricane Alley, Aruba is a Caribbean paradise with no off-season and nonstop flights from cities across the US for a couples getaway to fit any due date. Nicknamed “One Happy Island”, this sun-washed paradise is ringed by powder-soft sand beaches and turquoise waters for pure seaside bliss.

Relax on the perfectly named Baby Beach (or one of the countless other stretches of pristine waterfront) or explore with a gentle sailing and snorkeling excursion —either way, you’ll come back from this cheerful island rested and ready for your baby’s arrival.

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico, US

An art-rich oasis with calming desert vistas for indoor and outdoor pre-baby fun.

The most historic and bohemian city in the southwest, Santa Fe pairs world-class art and architecture with spectacular landscapes for expecting couples who like to mix their culture with open-air adventure.

Admire the historic architecture in downtown Santa Fe and the galleries and studios in the Canyon Road Arts District, plus the collections inside the New Mexico Museum of Art, Museum of International Folk Art, and Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Once you’ve had your fill of culture, set your sights beyond the city limits with scenic trail walks through the surrounding mountains.

8. Paris, France

Keep the romance alive with an escape to the City of Light.

There’s no better spot to spark the romantic flame of expecting parents than Paris. Rather than making your trip a sightseeing marathon across the city, slow your pace and focus on delving into one of the atmospheric neighborhoods together. Stroll the streets of Montmartre hand-in-hand, browse the boutiques and people-watch from the cafés in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, or soak in the authentic Parisian charms of Le Marais to savor your time before your twosome becomes a threesome.

9. Charleston, South Carolina, US

Historic B&Bs and gated gardens ooze southern charm.

Slow down and relax into the molasses pace of Charleston, a captivating southern metropolis soaked in history that scratches the city itch without an overwhelming urban frenzy. Its newly revived Historic District and dining scene give the city enough verve to make for an ideal babymoon destination without losing its famously languid spirit.

Take in elegant antebellum mansions, handsome churches, and time-worn cemeteries on foot or by horse-drawn carriage, then relax in the shady Battery and White Point Garden or cruise the Charleston Harbor to admire the city from the water.
