Overview

Volcanic beaches, native rain forest, and vineyards abound on this full-day tour of West Auckland. Begin with a wine tasting in Henderson Valley, then continue to the Waitakere Ranges, where more than 40,000 acres (16,000 hectares) of coastline and forest await you. Get elevated views of the reserve from the Arataki visitor center, explore the black-sand beaches of Piha and Karekare, and get close to the Karekare waterfalls. What To Expect

Following pickup from your central Auckland accommodation, travel by climate-controlled minibus to Henderson Valley, the heartland of Auckland’s wine industry. Here, visit Babich Wines and try a range of wine varietals grown on the Babich family’s vineyards in Hawkes Bay and Marlborough.

Continue to Auckland’s wild west coast, an area typified by volcanic beaches and dense rain forest. Drop into the Arataki visitor center in the Waitakere Ranges for elevated views of the rain forest. Then, head to Piha, one of Auckland’s most famous black-sand beaches popular with swimmers and surfers.

After exploring the beach and enjoying a panoramic drive around the coastal community, head to Karekare beach, which was featured in the movie, 'The Piano.' Walk along the sparkly black sands, and then continue into the Waitakeres to see the Karekare waterfalls.

Next, make the journey through forest and farmland for an included lunch, served with tea or then. Then, close off the day with wine tastings at West Brook Wine in the Ararimu Valley and Kumeu River Wines, the latter of which is famed for its world-class chardonnay.

Your full-day tour concludes with a drop-off at your central Auckland accommodation.

Although the weather wasn’t cooperating…this tour turned out amazing. John was a great guide and very knowledgeable of wine and the history of New Zealand. We drank some amazing wine and the lunch that was offered was amazing!! Get the market fish! Highly recommend this tour!

I wanted some local kiwi and our guide went and found us some and brought it back to the winery. Soljan had the best wine ever!!!!!! Our guide was sooooo knowledgeable and caring. We learned ALOT.

What an amazing time my friend Michele and I had on John's tour! It was our favorite day during our stay in Auckland. Michele is a wine aficionado, and I don't really drink, but both of us enjoyed every single stop, from the beach to the waterfall to our visit to a couple of wineries, and our delicious lunch. John was so much fun, a great conversationalist and source of local information. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who'd like to travel a bit farther afield than the city of Auckland.

John was excellent. Got a late start due to traffic but he did everything he could to make up for it. Piha beach was beautiful. All the wineries were very good. The lunch was outstanding. John was very knowledgeable about the wines and the wineries in that region. If you have questions about the wines in New Zealand, John has to be one of the best choices to give you the answers you are looking for.

Our ship wasn't allowed to dock by the Auckland port authority so we couldn't take the tour. We were told that the tour operator and Viator would keep all our money anyway and not consider a refund.
