Overview

Black sands, native wildlife, and award-winning wine awaits you on this tour of Auckland’s wild west coast. Following pickup from your central hotel, you’ll travel to Muriwai, a coastal enclave whose windswept beach and waves draw surfers and visitors from miles around. Stroll the beach and visit the cliff-top gannet colony, then continue to a nearby wine estate, where you’ll taste a selection of local varietals and blends.

The meeting point is beside the entrance to Sky City Hotel and Casino which is in the drive-through between Victoria Street and Federal Street. The entrance to the hotel is 10 metres opposite the base of the Auckland Sky Tower a well known iconic landmark in Auckland Central Business District CBD.

What To Expect

Begin with a morning or afternoon pickup from your hotel in Auckland CBD, and then travel out of the city center to West Auckland in a climate-controlled vehicle. On the way, you’ll cruise through the scenic areas of Waimaulu, Kumeu and Huapai, the latter of which translates as “the place of excellent fruit” in Māori.

On arrival in Muriwai, roughly 26 miles (42 km) west of central Auckland, jump out of the vehicle to explore with your guide. Walk along the sparkling black sands and learn more about the area’s history. Then, continue to Otakamiro Point, whose cliffs and rocky nesting areas are home to the region’s only gannet colony.

Next, continue to Kumeu River Wines, Matua Wines or West Brook wine estate, where you’ll take part in a guided wine tasting, sampling fine local varietals such as pinot gris, pinot noir and riesling.

After roughly 3.5 hours, your tour concludes with a drop-off back at your hotel.

we had now done about 5 tours while here in Auckland and this was by far the best. John was very knowledgeable, helpful, funny and an all around great host. We tasted wine at two great wineries with not only great wine but great views and a lot of fun. We would suggest this tour to anyone and were tempted to sign up for another one if we had the time.

Lovely trip though the country beyond Auckland. Our host, John, has an amazing knowledge of the NZ wine world and his country. John narrated throughout our trip on numerous topics besides the NZ wines, which was so interesting and informative. We had a great time and highly recommend this tour if you are interested in wine related topics as well as current NZ conditions. The NZ wines that we tasted were not to our liking that day, but we know that we do enjoy other NZ wines. to our tastes, but nonetheless we had a fine afternoon.

Great half-day wine tour

John has a lot of wine industry experience as well as great knowledge of New Zealand history. Lots of interesting information during the ride, brilliant stops to see gannets and walk on the beach and a nice choice of wineries to visit. It's about 4 hours from pick-up to drop-off and a really fun way to spend an afternoon. I highly recommend it!

Captivating wine tour

I booked this trip with my sister and right from pick up it was enjoyable he is just an amazing guy and extremely knowledgeable about his job and the wine making process, even with the heavy rain during the tour the second there was a clear sky we got to see the black beaches and even collect some black sand from little bottles he gave us. In all this was an amazing experience and would definitely book this tour again
