We had a wonderful half-day tour at Montserrat. Alejandro did a fantastic job, even if his English was a work in progress. To really take it all in, we think you would need something closer to a full day. As it was, we did not have time to take the hike and go up the funicular. If you want to hear the boys choir sing, this takes place in the afternoon. But, In Out Tours did a great job and we would highly recommend this excursion.

Milena arrived on time for our tour to Monserrat. She took time to explain to us the importance of each spot within the monastery. She recommended a good cheese produced by a small farm in the area. She was a delight to be with and we’re thankful she was the one who guided us to the tour.

Carlos was GREAT. We have been touring for 7 straight days and it was getting old. Carlos made it fun and personal. He was engaged and made sure we got out of it what we wanted. He was by far the best guide this trip. Oh and the trip was good too my wife who isn’t into this usually really enjoyed it.

We had Joan as our guide and he was wonderful. He picked us up in Barcelona and drove us to Montserrat giving us cementation of the scenery along the way. The monastery is amazing and the Basilica is awe inspiring. We took the walk up to St Michaels cross which was a bit hilly but worth the effort.

Fun Day at Montserrat

Montserrat is wonderful site to visit. The mountain itself is full of natural beauty, both rocky and green, and provides miles of unrestricted visibility to the surrounding Catalan countryside. The monastery is tucked away neatly amidst that setting, and is lovely place to visit. Our guide was able to put the building and all of its art and decorative elements in context for us, so it was well worth having a guide with us. La Moreneta, the black Madonna, is perched up in a shrine overlooking the nave of the church. Access to her is pretty easy and the wait wasn’t long. I was surprised that we were able to touch her orb! Our guide, Alex, was top notch. Thoughtful, interesting, and very much in control. He whisked us in and out of every location swiftly and smoothly. We were picked up at 8:20am and were back by 2pm. There was plenty of time for lunch in the cafeteria at the Abbey. This was a memorable tour, and I recommend it.

Beautiful location and site. A shame was ruined by poor guide who tried to basically cheat us out of seeing the black Madonna. Then was on the phone conducting personal business. They cancelled our morning tour, and we missed seeing hits choir we had been waiting for.

Our guide was Ramon. He's a local Catalonian. Ramon was very informative and passionate about the history of Barcelona and Montserrat. He texted me the night before to confirm pick up and timing. He was very polite and full of knowledge. We had a great time visiting Montserrat. Ramon was a perfect guide and a safe driver even through the very winding roads up/down the mountain. We had a full car of 7 people in the van. It was a very hot day and we wished the van could have more ventilation in the back row.

Montserrat Musings: Great Day Trip

Montserrat interested us as soon as we started looking at destinations convenient to Barcelona. My husband, two college-aged daughters, and I booked a tour with Javi as our guide. Simply put, it was a REMARKABLE day. Having hotel pickup and drop off was INCREDIBLY CONVENIENT. The van was very clean and comfortabler. Javi was just what we were looking for in a guide. He prepared us for the visit during the drive describing the history of the monastery and mountain. We chose to take the Aeri (cable car) up to the monastery level. That was an anticipated extra charge, but allowed for a picturesque approach. With more time, we would have enjoyed the climb. Javi shared that it is a pilgrimmage site, so there were plenty of people who walked. I think what we enjoyed most was Javi's reverence to the mountain and the monastery as both a natural wonder and a mystical/spiritual spot for Catalans. Javi also did a great job of describing the symbolism of basilica and other religious areas on the mountain. While on the mountain we had three choices based on the timing of the tour: enjoying restaurants on the monastery level, a cogwheel train to the top of the mountain to better see the needles at the top, or a hike to the cross of St. Michael. We chose to get the closer view of the mountain top, but with more time, we would have also hiked out to the cross. BIG SHOUT OUT TO JAVI for making the day a special one for our family.
