Overview

On this exciting Kona submarine tour, dive deep below the cobalt waters just off the Kona coast, where an entire world of fish and marine creatures is waiting just below the surface. As the submarine descends towards the colorful reef, peer through the portholes at fish that swim to within inches of the submarine windows, and experience the sense of peace and calm in this world beneath the waves. This is a great way to explore underwater without even getting your hair wet, and, if you’re very lucky, there’s even the chance you could see a passing shark.

What To Expect

Thanks to the volcanic lava rock that filters the rainfall and runoff, the water here on the Kona coast is some of the clearest in Hawaii. On this enthralling Kona submarine tour, explore the clear waters and colorful reefs just off of the Kona coast, where schools of tropical reef fish flit above patches of sand and through caves. 

See all types of tropical marine life on this Big Island submarine tour, from schools of small manini, or convict tang, to larger fish such as the big-eyed emperor fish that slowly cruise above the reef. 

This Atlantis Submarine Kona Adventure has been featured in National Geographic television shows, and explores the ocean just off the coast to depths of 100 feet (30 meters). For the entirety of the underwater journey, you can relax in comfort in the air-conditioned sub that only holds 48 people, and casually watch through the circular portholes as fish go swimming right by.

  • Children must be 36 inches tall or taller to ride the submarine
  • Stroller accessible
  • Children under age 3 who meet the 36" requirement are allowed to ride the submarine and a child ticket must be purchased.
  • Actual underwater tour time is 45 minutes. Shuttle boat ride from the pier to the submarine and transfer is 5 minutes each way
  • Near public transportation
  • Most travelers can participate
  • Passengers must be capable of ascending and descending a near vertical ladder to board the submarine
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 48 travelers

Cancellation Policy

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.

  • For a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience’s start time.
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
  • Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.
  • This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.

Our guide and pilot (?) were awesome! The views were beautiful. My only complaint is that it was incredibly hard to see because we had so many people on board. Many of which were overweight and spilling over into your section. I know that is something that can’t be controlled, but given we are the most obese country in the world…consideration of allowing less passengers instead of packing people in at max capacity will allow for a better experience for everyone. I was able to see maybe 1/3 of the experience and my back hurt having to twist and contort so that I didn’t have someone on top of me. Staff is amazing!

Under the ocean

Unique experience, as close as you can get to the bottom of the ocean without scub diving. Crew friendly, fun and experts regarding the underwater world explored during the tour. Kid friendly. Highly recommend.

Got to see sharks and all kinds of fish. Some ship wrecks. The people that took us down knew what the fish were called, so that was helpful. Very cool experience!

Fish on the reef

The ride was great because Atlantis has found a healthy reef that attracts fish & has 2 sunken boats. Plenty of portholes. An experienced narrator that explains what you are looking at. Worth it!

I booked 3 events on this app while visiting Hawaii with my husband. All 3 events were excellent. The travel guides were friendly and very knowledgeable. This is a great app and will definitely be using it in the future. This also happened back in April of 2022.

I've wanted to do this for years and finally got the chance to do it. While SCUBA is fun, we were able to cruise around about 100 feet down for quite a while with no worries. We got to see old boats and lots of fish along with a well narrated discussion of exactly what we saw.

Fun and interesting

This was so much fun! The guides were knowledgable about the different fish and the coral, as well as the two ship wrecks we saw. We got to see an eagle spotted sting ray amd two reef sharks, which the guides said was super rare to see on the same tour. It was all beautiful.

Fun snorkel adventure - without getting wet

We shuttled out to the submarine and then enjoyed a 40-45 underwater journey along the ocean bottom and past two ship wrecks where fish and sharks can be easily found. This is fun for all ages, but seemed especially opportune for young kids and elderly who may not be able to snorkel. We all love snorkeling, yet we found this to be a fun way to complement our other snorkeling adventures. Parking at the Marriott Courtyard Kamehameha is very convenient and is a bargain at only $2 for this busy area. Afterward the submarine adventure, you can enjoy a meal across the street from the hotel.

Very disappointed in what we were able to view from the submarine. It may have been due to the foggy conditions of the water. Narrator and crew were delightful. But, for the cost the experience was very disappointing.
