What To Expect

For centuries the political heart of the city, the Palazzo Vecchio was built atop ancient Roman ruins and carries the legacy of both medieval and Renaissance Florence. To explore this historical treasure, meet your local guide and get an overview of the building’s past and importance before stepping inside.

Wander in awe through the enormous ‘Salone dei Cinquecento,’ where the two greatest Florentine artists of their time, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, were once commissioned to adorn the walls with giant murals. Admire other masterpieces by Michelangelo, Donatello and other Renaissance greats throughout the palazzo. See the mysterious symbols and artworks that inspired Dan Brown’s novel ‘Inferno’ (and the film of the same name), such as an inscription ‘Cerca e Trova’ (‘Seek and you shall find’) written atop a fresco by Giorgio Vasari.

Learn about the building’s transformation from a medieval town hall into the private residence of Duke Cosimo I de Medici during the 15th century. During the tour, visit every section of the palazzo, the map room, captivating terraces and Arnolfo’s Tower, which rises majestically above the city. Tour size is limited for a more personalized, small-group experience.

Laura was an excellent guide! We had a very small group and she was able to answer questions and was extremely knowledgeable about the art and history if the Medici. She is also excellent with younger tourists!
Palazza Vecchio tour

The value did not match the price. We didn’t start until noon as it took the guide 25 minutes to pick up our tickets at the desk. She had to leave “early” at one o’clock apologizing for this. But we had paid $118 ($58) each for one hour. The guide provided interesting info and spoke good English and was very gracious. But too short a tour for the cost as we expected 2 hrs, not one.

The tour was interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable and answered all questions well. But the group was too large, maybe 35 people. We were told to be there at 10:00 but were still standing in the rain waiting for 3 people at 10:25. There should be a backup plan for someone to meet stragglers so everyone else can start the tour. The tour was advertised as 75 min. But we only spent an hour and there was lots in the Academia still to see so not sure why we didn't continue a bit longer.
