What To Expect

Take your gastronomic tour of New Orleans to a new level with a lively cooking class and a historic cocktail tour! First, make your way to the New Orleans School of Cooking in the French Quarter, where your afternoon excursion begins. Grab a seat with fellow food enthusiasts for the session, during which you’ll get to know a professional chef and hear the history of Louisiana’s soulful cuisine, including the melting pot of cultural influence that distinguishes Cajun and Creole dishes.

As your chef prepares classic dishes such as gumbo, jambalaya, and crawfish etouffée, learn traditional techniques—such as the importance of a good roux—and the variety of unique spices that give classic Louisiana fare its distinctive flavor. After each live cooking demonstration (participants do not cook in this session), indulge in hearty samples paired with tasty local beer, iced tea, or coffee. Take home a complimentary recipe book to hone your cooking chops!

Afterward, take a welcome stroll through the timeless French Quarter. You’ll accompany a local cocktail‐ophile on an evolutionary tour of spirits and drink in New Orleans, stopping at several historic bars to sample iconic cocktails including a Sazerac – invented in 1850!

Between stops, admire the incomparable Vieux Carré (‘Old Square’) – the city’s oldest neighborhood and remaining cultural hub. Learn about French, Spanish, and Creole influence on this famous neighborhood, and view centuries‐old bars and eateries, including the city’s oldest restaurant for a peek at the wine cellar and private dining rooms.

Your combo tour ends back at the starting point with plenty of time to check out a few other favorite local drinking holes—so be sure to get recommendations from your guide!

Our cooking instructor...
LaTanya_B, Apr 2024
Our cooking instructor Dianne was awesome & our tour guide Tim was knowledgeable. Both were very pleasant people who made our experience most enjoyable! Would highly recommend!😁
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thanks for the high recommendation and we will certainly pass this on to Dianne and Tim
If you have time.
Roya_A, Apr 2024
I would wait and book directly with the cooking school. The cocktail tour guide never showed up which was a little disappointing. However, the food was delicious and Dianne was a wonderful soul/chef.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
We apologize if the guide did not meet you at the appointed time and location. We will find out what happened if you can reply as to which evening you had reserved your tour. The two pieces make a great rounded trip through the tastes of our city.
Very fun tour

Tim was our guide and he was a blast. Very knowledgeable, and able to keep everyone entertained despite the cold weather. Loved learning the history behind the sites we visited and how he tied it all together.
Highly recommended

Tom, our chef was excellent. He was both knowledgeable and entertaining. The food was great, thank you. Tim was an outstanding cocktail guide with very wide knowledge and great people skills
Response from Host, Feb 2024
Fabulous - Good Food, Good Drinks and Good Fun.
Yummy food & drinks!
Tiffany_F, Feb 2024
Vivian, our chef, was great. She was very engaging and welcoming! Vivian interweaved stories about her life and NOLA history into the demonstration which personalized the experience. Plus, the food was yummy! Also, all the other staff members were very pleasant and contributed to the overall positive experience. Roni, our cocktail tour guide, was very knowledgable and conversational. He welcomed questions and shared history in a very relatable way. Plus, the included drinks were STRONG and we got to expedience several bars we didn’t plan on our list!
Response from Host, Feb 2024
The whole experience is set to show you a side of New Orleans that is entertaining and educational - and most of all - real New Orleans.
Great time!

Excellent introduction to New Orleans food & drink
Colleen_M, Nov 2023
Diane’s cooking class was great and the food was delicious. It was a great way to be introduced to Creole/Cajun cuisine. Robert was an excellent guide for the cocktail tour, and had some really good information on the history of the cocktails we enjoyed.
Response from Host, Dec 2023
We hope you have great recipes to take home and share. Thank you
The cooking...
Chuck_C, Oct 2023
The cooking class/demonstration was very fun and served as a great three-course meal (late lunch) consisting of Gumbo, Jambalaya, and Pralines. The Chef was not just educational (giving us the history/etc.) but also very entertaining. This was followed by a walking tour of some of the key cocktails/bars in New Orleans (where they claim the "cocktail" was invented thanks to Peychaud's bitters) and our tour guide Robert was SUPER entertaining (you can't miss him with his whimsical moustache) and extremely knowledgeable!
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Terrific review and we are delighted at your overview.
Great afternoon!
Steve_L, Aug 2023
Chef Lynn was amazing in the food class. Took time to answer all questions and was very helpful. Gumbo, jambalaya and pralines were served in good portions for a late lunch or afternoon bite. Lots of history shared. Would do again. Bob S. was the tour guide for the cocktail portion. Again, lots of history and local knowledge shared. 2 cocktails were included . We had a small group of 6 total for the tour which allowed for more interaction and discussion.

Would recommend!

An authentic introduction to NOLA
Alexis_C, Mar 2023
Both the cooking class and the cocktail tour were wonderful. Rene taught us how to make a delicious gumbo and jambalaya. And I can't stop thinking about those pralines he made. He was funny and outgoing and 100% New Orleans Creole. I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to LA cuisine. Robert picked us up for the walking cocktail tour and we got to learn about NOLA through the drinks that were created there. Robert was super knowledgeable about the cocktails, the buildings, and New Orleans history. The bars we visited were amazing. Each had its own unique atmosphere and the drink were, of course, delicious.
Response from Host, Apr 2023
Food and cocktails can't be beat. Thank you for letting us know how much you enjoyed it.
too much like a history class
Jeff_L, Feb 2023
The cooking class was too history focused for me - although some of it was interesting it wasn't what I expected. We thought we would be learning cooking techniques but most of that was done prior to the class starting. It was mostly teaching about the history of New Orleans and cuisine and such - not what I was interested in. The walking tour was fun but we were picked up and the rest of the group was in full swing with drinks that we never got so it felt like we missed part of that.
Excellent & food was better than restaurant quality!
Michael_V, Jan 2023
The cooking class & food we're excellent!! I got no information on the cocktail walking tour... I think it may have been buried in one of the multitude of semi-cryptic email messages. I signed up for 3 different Viator cooking/tours...so maybe 1 at a time is easier...
Well ….
Mary_G, Jan 2023
I would recommend the cooking portion (never saw a spice packet as promised..not a deal breaker though) but I would book that via the school directly. The tour portion was less than expected. The class was over and we looked and asked around for the tour guide. To his defense, we were two older tourists and his only two for the tour. He did ask what we expected and that was the problem, we expected a variety of drink experiences (samples of New Orleans specialties) like the prior tour we had taken provided. Instead he took us (at a brisk pace) to three bars with an explanation of the significant specialty there. The bars were VERY accommodating and entertaining. The awkwardness continued when we left what was the last bar, we thought we were heading off to another destination, only to have the guide amble out to say that was it. The only real personal moments were when we asked HIM questions about the locals. Cooking class a plus, cocktail walking tour substantially less. In our defense, he knew there were only two of us (he had a guest list) and it was probably not worth his time or effort for an insignificant payout. It might have been better customer service, to us, to have canceled instead of being so disinterested.
Cooking school top notch, Disappointed with cocktail tour
Mary_G, Jan 2023
The cooking school was wonderful. The chefs were personable and knowledgeable. The food prepared was delicious. However, the cocktail walking tour was a big disappointment. Sean did not announce his presence at the location to begin the tour. We were asking around and no one knew what we were to do. It was not until I approached Sean, who was standing in the cooking store looking at store items, he said he was the tour guide. He did not introduce himself. I had to ask him his name. When we left the store he took off at a pace that was not conducive for 2 mature women to follow. At one point he was nearly a 1/2 block in front of us. When he was talking, he mumbled, and was difficult to understand. He never told us how many bars we would visit, and after the 3rd bar, we exited the building, expecting to move to the next bar, and Sean came out the door behind us, likely looking for a tip, and said, “That was the last bar, I thought you knew.” I would recommend booking the cooking school directly from the school and skip the rest.
Awesome experience

The cocktail walking tour was awesome! Bob was very knowledgeable and took us to bars with interesting history! Loved doing this tour with my friends
Response from Host, Dec 2022
That tour make a complete circle of food, beverage and fun for everyone.
Great demo cooking class
Danielle_L, Nov 2022
Chef Diane was awesome. I feel like I can tackle gumbo and/or jambalaya. But I'll definitely try la roux. Samples were very generous and enough for seconds
Response from Host, Dec 2022
Just remember to watch the color of the roux! Thank you
Sad
Patsy_D, Nov 2022
The class was good. My issue is with Viator. Made reservation months in advance. Wrong date was listed. Changed the date. Got a confirming email. Viator kept posting wrong date. Made 6 attempts to confirm date. Got to venue. We were list as no shows on wrong date. We did get in last and were separated. From my seat I could not see the presentation. Venue said they have had this issue many time with Viator. Color me disappointed 😞
Perfect experience if you’re traveling alone
