What To Expect

A resort town for Rome's rich and famous for over 2,000 years, Tivoli is today a fascinating refuge for anyone interested in history and culture. This guided day trip from Rome transports you to Tivoli on a comfortable air-conditioned bus and deposits you smack in the center of thousands of years of history.

Take a guided walking tour of Hadrian's Villa, a lavish palace where the Roman emperor officially moved in AD 128. Marvel at the ruins of temples and theaters, swimming pools and steam rooms. With a guide at your side, learn about what daily life at the villa was like nearly 2,000 years ago.

After touring the ancient estate, indulge in a delicious Roman lunch at a local restaurant and then get acquainted with the opulent Villa d'Este, an erstwhile Benedictine convent that was turned into a Renaissance palace by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, son of Lucrezia Borgia. Wander through the palace's verdant, highly manicured gardens and take delight in the famed Fountain of Neptune.

After touring the villa, hop back on the bus for the return back to Rome.

Wonderful tour, wonderful guide. There were only 5 of us in a Small Mercedes van and it was perfect. Lunch was very good. I was surprised to say the least but I would definitely recommend. Guide Joanna was very personable and knowledgeable. It was a plus that her English was good!!!

Good tour of spectacular sites.
ELIZABETH_P, Jan 2024
Guide was relatively knowledgeable, though very causal. Bus trip was about 45 min and was fine. Hadrian's Villa was the first stop. We bypassed the ticket kiosk and the orientation maps, which would have been helpful. I picked one up at the end. The Villa is expansive and we walked all around. All of the important sites - the Maritime Theater and the Canopus were spectacular. The ancient ruins reminded me of our tours at Mesa Verde in southern Colorado. Second stop was lunch in Tivoli. The restaurant was a local place. Food was fine and there was plenty of it. We filled up on the first course before the pasta came. Good thing we had walked a lot! The third stop was the Villa D'Este. The villa itself is a wonderful example of the architecture of the time. The real star is the gardens. We spent plenty of time there and could have happily stayed longer. Ride back to Rome was uneventful. Arrived a little later than anticipated, but worth the time.
Tivoli: a great diversion from Rome

It was great to spend a day outside of Rome. Both Hadrian’s villa and villa d’este were fun to visit. Glad we had a guide to explain the history of the locations. We really enjoyed the lunch as well.
Great day! Don’t miss it.

Nice break from the city. Was about a 40 minute ride. When to two sites with lunch in between. The Villa d’este was our favorite and a great way to end the tour. Walk the entire garden or you’ll miss so much beauty. Waterfalls, beautiful trees, etc. Lunch was very good, family style and plenty to go around. Wear good shoes, lots of walking and steps. Some of the older or out of shape people had a hard time keeping up in a few spots.
It was a good place to go. But the tour was ok.

Ok. Going to these places was AMAZING. But I would say you should just go by yourself or pick another tour. I usually do not write bad reviews but this tour was not the best for the price they ask. The lunch they gave us at a restaurant was the worst Italian food me or my family has ever had and had no flavor. Also, the tour guide (no rude intentions) was hard to hear as his English was not the best. Again— I am not trying to dismiss this tour. Just try to find a better experience for your money
A must do if you make it to Rome!!!!

Fabulous, history-filled tour!!! Maria Teresa was and incredible guide and is a Tivoli local with ancestors going back several generations and a qualified historian and archaeologist (such a bonus)…. And it was obvious how passionate she is about making sure everyone understood the importance and significance of what we are seeing…. Can’t say enough - and this was my second time taking the tour!!!!
Great day trip into the countryside - not too far from Rome.
Tamara_R, May 2023
This is a wonderful day trip from Rome taking you out of the bustling city into the country and these beautiful villas. Hadrian's Villa has such history and views. Villa d'Este has beautiful gardens. We had a traditional lunch in a quaint restaurant with great food and wine. Our guide, Pamela and our driver, Luciano did an amazing job. Highly recommended.
Lovely Villas in Tivoli
Ryan_C, May 2023
These are great sites to visit and worth seeing, we enjoyed the tour because it was great to see these places which we couldn’t do any way other than taking the tour. This was a large group tour and we met the guide at Hadrian’s Villa. He was a very good guide. Everyone thought that we would have lunch between the sites, but because the same guide led us at both sites, we ended up having lunch afterwards. The only problem with this tour is with the lunch. We really should have had lunch between visiting the two sites. Also the restaurant itself was just so-so and was kind of out of the way. We also spent way too long at the restaurant.
Excellent Day Trip Out of Rome
Richard_R, May 2023
We have been in Rome multiple times but we have never taken this day trip. It was really enjoyable! Hadrian’s Villa is a 2000 year old ruin with great archeological vistas for picture taking. Fascinating. Villa d’Este is a terrific balance of Renaissance architecture and beauty. They deliberately stage this tour for a quick walk through the Villa. That is because the gardens are where you will want to spend your time. They are huge and magnificent! It is a UNESCO site and the world’s best example of a Renaissance Garden. Beware walking is pretty extensive and there are a lot of stairs. One member of our group waited up in the exterior patio overlooking the gardens while we toured - that was an option they accommodated. Lunch in Tivoli was very enjoyable and very filling. It included wine. The price of the tour was very reasonable for everything included! Our tour guide was very experienced, knowledgeable and personable. Please remember to tip your guide and driver- this is their living.
Enjoyable day

Very enjoyable day, tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. It was a long day which could be made shorter by reducing the time spent at lunch, it was not required. Lots of walking and stairs, reasonable level of fitness required

Was a perfect day and spring is so beautiful in these villas. Guide Carolina was amazing. Lunch was good and drivers very nice.
Great way to escape Rome for a day.
Nicholas_L, Apr 2023
This was a nice day trip escape from the business of Rome. Hadrian's villa is a huge complex of ruins that are very interesting and not so crowded. Then the Villa D'Este was delightful with not many people. The gardens with all the fountains were stunning. After visiting the villa, make sure to visit the Capitoline museum to appreciate the beautiful statues and artworks that used to be there.

Our guide was so knowledgeable and made the garden and the purpose of its creator come alive. The gardens are beautiful but its history is even more fascinating. Go!! It was a grand day!

Terrific guide (Diana) and a lovely trip contrasting a sumptuous renaissance villa and the ruined largest Roman one. Highly recommended day trip, only 30-40 minutes from Rome.
