Must do tour with room for improved logistics

A mini bus picked us up at our resort on time at 7AM and after a stop at another resort we were dropped with 100’s of others at a downtown Playa del Carmen gift shop at about 7:40AM. After having our hands sanitized on entry we proceeded to use the restrooms which ironically were missing toilet paper and hand soap. We then waited in a line to check in for our tour and after getting our wrist band were told to wait outside at 8:15AM to have our names called. Being given a colour code or muster point for our tour bus would have been much more efficient than the guides reading all names out loud, often many times in a row -Bueller?…Bueller? going through the entire list of parties on the bus. After boarding at around 8:35AM we proceeded to wait for a couple that was late and sat on the bus until well after 9AM before departing with no explanation whatsoever. At about 9:30 we stopped in a construction area (again with no explanation) to wait about 15 minutes for another couple to board the bus. This was followed by a short bus ride to Tulum (which got me wishing I had done the Tulum tour in stead) where we stopped at a grocery store and waited again for 30 minutes while being asked not to leave the bus. By the time we left it was about 10:45 and we were already close to 4hrs since our resort pick up and no closer to Chichen Itza! After 2.5 hrs of having been on this tour bus with no peep from Ricardo, Gonzalo (who may have just joined) finally decided to tell us what was going on - crazy times of course - and finally shared that masks had to be worn on the bus etc. Luckily he also proceeded to talk about our day, Mayan culture, etc. which was actually very interesting and entertaining. Then after being given a hard sell on how poor Mayans are and the excellent quality of Mayan goods we could find, we stopped at a Mayan rest stop at noon where were were blessed by a Mayan priest, given another hard sales pitch to part with our money, and set free in gift shop hand made obsidian and wood crafts with Mayan salesman in tow before having our photo taken and being provided a delicious lunch and refreshments. After a couple hours we were finally on our way again to Chichen Itza! Just when I thought the sales pitches were over a Mayan University student was now on board who taught us some Mayan and provided us each a tiny shot of liquor for a toast - how nice! Not surprisingly, however this was followed by the handing out of 250ml bottles of $7 liquor with everyones photo taped on as a souvenir for only $20 USD which you could either buy or hand back to him in shame and embarrassment. Lucky for him, I’m a big spender (sucker) so added the bottle of overpriced booze to my bag of Mayan Obsidian and wood carvings from the last stop! After arriving at Chichen Itza in mid afternoon there was a sigh of relief and we were given 10 mins for a restroom break before proceeding on an hour long tour with our very knowledgeable guide Gonzalo. After an hour of the formal tour we had another hour which went by very quickly as the city is vast and there is so much to see. Unfortunately, among the sights were literally hundreds of trinket vendors all selling the same made in China trinkets for as little as “$1 - almost free” which took away from the sacred nature of Chichen Itza that we had felt at other wonders such as Stone Henge where such peddling is not permitted. A short drive later we were enjoying a much needed refreshing dip at a Cenote which also sold refreshments, had shops including Tequilla tasting and was also a really nice tourist destination. After an hour at the Cenote, the sun was setting as we headed to the beautiful town square of Valladolid for a brief 30 minute stop to grab some food and see the sites. This was a great way to see a bit of Mexican life outside of the resorts and tourist areas. At pick-up however, the bus was not exactly where we were supposed to meet and none of the guides knew enough to stand at the meeting spot to direct passengers to the new bus location so we again waited 15 mins on the bus while the missing passengers waited or searched the square for their transportation. After a few hours of sleeping on the bus we were all woken up for a final shakedown for tips and asked to complete surveys of which there were not enough to go around (more bad planning) before rendezvousing with a mini bus that dropped us off at our resort 40 minutes later at 11PM. What we expected to be a 12 hour day had turned into 16 hrs mainly due to all the waiting and inefficient logistics. Chichen Itza and the Cenote are definitely worth seeing, but just be ready for a lot of delays and hard selling to buy all the extras.
Scam!!! Bait and Switch! Do not book!

I am writing this in English and Spanish, so that it can be understood. Please let me also say I am from the US but I live in Mexico. This was my 3rd time going to Chichen Itza and my 3rd tour company and this was by far the worst experience ever! I booked the tour because it said unlimited drinks and it is a 14 hour day on these tours, so hydration is necessary. The tour window that we were given was 7am-930am which is a very large window to be picked up at a pick up point. I called and messaged with no answer. I messaged Viator to contact them and they could also not reach them. They did not come to pick us up and so we rescheduled to the next day. They came and got us and we go to the bus where I was told that I owed 1400 more pesos in cash or we could not get on. I had booked the entire tour on Viator. I asked what it was for and he said some costs aren’t included which is ridiculous. I paid it or we could not get on the tour. I asked for a water since drinks were unlimited in our tour package. I was told that we couldn’t have a drink until after the first stop. by this time it was 11:30am and we had been at the pick up point at 7am. We finally were able to get a water and when we asked for a beer that were also unlimited, I was told they didn’t have any. Every announcement was done only in Spanish. I understand Spanish but my boyfriend does not. When we got off for lunch I asked one of the tour guides, his name is CELSO RIOS, to please make the announcements in English also and he said he asked to raise your hand if you needed English and he did the first time and I raised my hand amongst a few other people on the bus. He said he asked every time and if he doesn’t see a hand then he won’t say it in English. I said you don’t need to ask every time, you have English speakers on the tour. He rudely said that he will ask as many times as he chooses. I immediately asked when lunch was and if we could get a drink then (which we could not and had to buy our drinks) and he replied “I’m sure you are used to nicer places but we are a poor country so you should appreciate this place and our food.” I said “I live here in Mexico, so what you are saying is incredibly rude by assuming that I am not appreciative of any place and assuming I am a tourist. I have simply been asking for unlimited water, sodas, and beers as my tour was promised by your company.” CELSO replied that “He didn’t know who lied to me when they signed me up but it was not him and I can take it up with his company.” I responded that I had booked it online and he said to take it up with the company. I have never had someone be so racist and degrading to me on a tour. Please only use Xcaret directly for tours. I was trying to save some money by buying an unlimited drink package that was a scam!
