Overview

The dormant Haleakala Volcano towers thousands of feet in the air. During this exciting excursion, go downhill biking on the slopes of the volcano and enjoy some of the best views of the island. A van drives you up the mountain to your starting point and then you can ride the upper and lower sections at your own pace. Maui County Law ages 15-up.

A self-guided tour means you can set your own pace

The ride was very exciting and beautiful. Our instructor Remy was very knowledgeable and entertaining, giving us both safety instructions and fun tips. The equipment was in great working order and gave us a very enjoyable and secure trip. I would do this trip again and highly recommend doing this to everyone who has ridden a bike without training wheels.

Who wouldn’t take a ride DOWN a volcano?? Do this tour!

Great experience! Haleakala offered once-in-a-lifetime views. Roads were new or well maintained. Good equipment including bikes with effective brakes and safety gear were provided. Windbreakers, small backpack and gloves offered for comfort and convenience was a nice bonus. Tour group is organized with great instruction which definitely inspired confidence. Paia was a great little town for shopping and lunch after the tour, as well. Would highly recommend!

The guide and others we interacted with were very nice and informative. The ride itself was unfulfilling. We were moving so fast down the volcano. No time or place to take pictures.

We had a wonderful time biking down Haleakala with Maui Sunriders! We visit Maui each year, and this was our 3rd year in a row doing this ride with Maui Sunriders. They are very organized, and such a fun group of guys. The ride is super fun and something we look forward to yearly!

So much fun for those who can ride a bicycle. The tour no longer starts at the summit though. Hawaii regulators made this change in January 2023.

Staff was informative and helpful. We chose this excursion as you can go at your own pace without being part of the group. Was disappointed that the Kula portion was cut out and we had to be picked up and dropped off once again.

Exhilarating Ride Down Hairpin Curves

Speeding down the tight curves of Haleakala was fun! Time and money well spent, seeing the changing geography and learning the history of the area on the drive up. It was disappointing that we had to shuttle through Kula, but out of the operator’s control due to local legislation. The stop in Makawao was fun and delicious, with the added bonus of stopping at the Maui Cookie Lady Store!

This was a good overall experience. There are a couple notes to keep in mind. About 1/2 the ride was not available due to not being allowed. This was a major disappointment. Not a problem that is controllable by the Maui Sunriders but it should have been advised on the site. Not sure if this is a seasonal thing or what.

Johnny was our tour guide and was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We took the self guided tour and were extremely pleased. It wasn’t difficult at all and Johnny gave us some very great tips. My family of four enjoy this extremely, and I would highly recommend it. The bikes were in excellent condition and the road was very easy to navigate. Once again, I highly recommend this tour and I highly recommend this company.

We had a blast driving down the mountain and enjoyed the amazing views of beautiful mountains and ocean and horse ranches. Our tour guide Rocco was born and raised in the town of Makawao which is a town at the bottom of Hakeakala. Rocco was very knowledgeable about history and geography of the area and gave us great recommendations on places to eat. He went above and beyond and took very good care of us. We definitely recommend Sun Rider bike tour and especially recommend our tour guide Rocco.

Warning: this is for seasoned bikers (not beginners or people that havent ridden a bike for awhile) The ride was too steep and extreme an incline for my wife, so unfortunately she couldn't join me and she had to ride down in the van :( ... but I absolutely loved it and had a blast! Apparently I was the fastest one lol. I highly recommend this to bikers. Very little peddling and all brakes. Nice bikes and supplied gear. The guide is an awesome and funny guy (leave him a big tip!) The only suggestions I have is wished they provided big brightly colored signs to make the stop and shop more visible. I was the only one that flew by the stop and had trouble finding the place (it's tucked away from the street) and note that parking is NOT free (you must pay).
