This tour focus on the visit of the two main archaeological sites of the region: Pompeii and Herculaneum, the ancient roman cities swept away by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Considered of great importance for the Roman Empire, they were at their social and economic peak at the time of the disaster. The main difference between the two places is that Pompeii was a bustling city, gateway for merchants and travellers, while the latter was more of a residential village for aristocrats and intellectuals. Lunch break to a local restaurant, drinks not included. After lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, you will be heading towards the ruins of Herculaneum.

What To Expect

Begin your trip with pickup from your select Naples hotel and hop aboard your coach toward Pompeii. Once buried under a blanket of ash from Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD, the city wasn't unearthed until the 18th century.

As you enter (own expense), follow your guide through the ruins and learn the fascinating history behind the ancient city. Pass excavations of the Teatro Grande, which once housed up to 5,000 spectators, and the Forum.

Continue to a family-run corals and cameo factory to learn more about the jewelry-making process. Afterward, walk to the 18th-century Ristorante Vesuvio for a delicious, Italian-style lunch.

Journey next to the coastal town of Ercolana, where the ruins of Herculaneum reside, another town struck during the infamous eruption. Though Pompeii is more widely-known, Herculaneum hosts a wealth of archaeological treasures. Enter (own expense) and explore at leisure, admiring the ancient monuments, preserved mosaics and fossils nearly 2,000 years old.

Your day trip will conclude with transportation back to your original departure point.

Opportunity missed!

We spent a lot of money on this experience and the Pompeii portion of the tour was a huge disappointment! Our tour guide spoke English but her accent was so strong we couldn't understand her. I kept asking my husband what she said and he always said he had no idea. This is something I have dreamed of doing since I was a kid. I can't tell you how disgusted we were. I later heard other people say they couldn't understand her either. The Herculaneum portion of the tour was very good. I would recommend that for sure. The cold, thin piece of chicken was too chewy to eat. I noticed nobody at our table ate the chicken.

Good tour , guides were great, friendly and knowledgeable, Pompeii is huge and the tour only covers about 1/8 of the park , Herculeaninum sight is much smaller and and covers around 50% of the sight. I would recommend for first timers

Great contrast of the two types of eruptions and buried cities. These were given by two guides. The first in Pompeii and the second in the van on the way to Herculaneum. There are phone like guides while inside.

Everything was great. We were picked up from our hotel and transported everywhere in a comfortable vehicle and looked after by our guide Chris. Chris was excellent, together with the guide at Pompei and they both made the day outstanding.

The Pompeii guide really helped put us back 2,000 years to the life of Pompeii before the mountain blew freezing the city in time. Both the guide (Alex I think) ànd the driver that took us to own there and back filled us with interesting info.

Our tour of Pompei and the Herculaneum was amazing. Our tour guide Loredana was so passionate which made the experience a great one. We had a beautiful lunch in between the 2 places which was nice to sit and chat with the other people on our tour. I would have no hesitation in recommending this tour to anybody. Its a full day tour but very moving and memorable.

Great guides but not a good tour overall

The actual tours were very good. The guides in both places were excellent and they covered a lot of ground; two hours, including 20 minutes of free time for picture taking, in Pompeii and an hour and a half in Herculaneum. There was also an hour for lunch. So three and a half hours of exploration. The total time we were with the tour was eight hours, three hours of exploring, one hour for lunch and four hours of ticket gathering and travel. Considering that we were with the tour for eight hours, I wished that we had at least another half hour in Pompeii, even if it was on our own without a guide. Next issue, the air conditioning in the bus that we traveled in for approximately three and one half hours was broken on a very hot and humid day. We were told when we took the bus from Pompeii to Herculaneum that the bus would be replaced but that did not happen. Instead we were treated to an hour long traveling sauna for the ride back to Naples. We all got off that bus drenched in sweat and exhausted from the heat. Happy with the tour guides, not happy with the tour.

Pompei tour was informative and our guide was pleasant. The pace was good but there was little escaping the peak summer sun. By the time we started Herculaneum we were spent and the tour was self-guided with an audio device and number system that was not idiot proof. We retreated to the Antiquarium and gift shop well ahead of time.
