Beautiful plantation! Loaded Full of UNEXPECTED HISTORY 😁
Trysta_B, May 2024
The tour was amazing, but the company doesn't give the Tour-Guides enough time per/tour for everyone to enter the room before they're giving the verbal history of each site. My mom is hard of hearing and missed out on 60% (on her own account) of what our tour guid said... and not all due to her lack of hearing in 1 ear. Because the tour-guide would start the verbal history as the 1st people entered the room (we were usually the middle to last people entering each location), We were all disappointed that we missed out on hearing the history of the locations we paid to tour. My aunt also has a hard time getting around with her physical disabilities, and wasn't going to fight her way to the front of able-bodied people so she could hear the full story. My mom and my aunt missed out on a lot the tour had to offer, as well as the rest of our party, who stuck by their side while filling them in on the history that they weren't able to hear, or missed out on for being the last people to enter the room... We tried really hard to repeat as much as our soft-spoken guide had to say as we continuued wedge ourselves In between a large group of people for each site (sometimes separating our group). As our tour guid said "her ma would of called us the cows tail end of the group"🤣 She was very sweet and kind. She took time educating my mom, boyfriend, as well as my boyfriends mother, on every little question they had about things that weren't talked about on the tour as well as their inquisitions about anything we missed. She was a 10/10 absolute Gem! I wish I remembered her name to give her credit. VIATOR has been a great company to book though. We had a swamp tour booked through them as well. I messed up having a redeye flight to NOLA and accidentally booked our swamp tour for the day we arrived they were able to reschedule our swamp tour for the next day with only a $10 extra charge for each person. Super Reasonable for my sleepy-mess-up. I would for sure book through Viator again! This review is 5/5 stars because the Destrehan Plantation management needs to know the tour guid we had was amazing but give the lil lady a bit more time to educate each group that comes in AFTER THEY ENTER THE SITE. Still love yall! And if you're reading this as a potential customer/tourist... BOOK IT NOW! This has been an very easy, stress-free experience with excellent guids for both of tours we booked through VIATOR. Happy travels to you and your loved ones! It asks in the review who you came with, but the options for Family is Teens, or Young Children. This was a trip of 30+ family members all adults... so I picked Friends out of Couples, Business, or Solo being the other options?

Wonderful tour guide and beautiful plantation! We loved it and so did our kids. Would highly recommend
Very good tour, not remote.

Our tour guide was excellent! They aren't allowed to talk about ghosts but I had to ask because we walked into the children's bedroom and it was colder than the rest of the rooms in the house. As soon as my stepdaughter said she didn't like the porcelain doll on the bed the light in the bedroom starting flickering like crazy. Overall it was a very good tour.
A tough but a necessary history lesson

One must revisit this part of history painful as it is but still worth honoring the lives who died in these plantations.
Enjoyable Experience

We enjoyed everything about the tour. Our tour guide, Jim, was wonderful. He talked knowledgeably about the landscape, buildings, and history of the plantations. We learned a lot and had fun.Worth the trip!
Tastefully presented tour on such around such a heavy and sad topic
Ashiya_M, Mar 2024
We were both interested in visiting a plantation to learn first hand about the painful past of slavery. This was such an interesting tour-we learned so much about things we had never learned in school, i.e. the 1811 Slave Revolt. Beverly was out tour guide and we really enjoyed the way she presented the information. We would recommend this to anyone visiting the New Orleans area.
Good tour.

Good historical look at a real plantation. It was interesting to see the craftsmanship of the time and some of the wardrobe items.

We had tour guide Evelyn, she was a delightful and knowledgeable guide. This Plantation was a pleasant surprise as it was one of the cheaper tours, but it was really informative and historical. The gentleman in the gift shop was also very helpful with finding things to do nearby.

Even in the rain the plantation visit was very informative and full of Destrehan family history. Great price with a short drive from New Orleans French Quarter

Our guide was Judy and really knew her history of the plantation. She went thru each each area including the list of names of the slaves and what their value was. Remarkable info to pass on.
Great Tour with a Great Guide

Beverly was a wonderful tour guide

We had a wonderful time at this property. We had a small group, just my husband, myself and my mother. Our tour guide, Beverly, was absolutely amazing!!! We really enjoyed her tour and she answered all of our questions. She also took the time to learn our names since it was a small group. The property itself is beautifully taken care of and we enjoyed taking time after the tour to walk around the property and take photos. Highly recommended if you are in the area.
Fantastic

Learnt a lot about the history of the plantations and how it was passed down between the families. Was shocking to see how each slave was valued depending on their jobs but was good to hear those that could were able to buy themselves free. I absolutely loved all the trees (live oaks) they looked amazing and how the slaves would dry the hanging bits which would be used as stuffing in mattress and car seats before foam was made. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and was more than happy to share her knowledge of the estate with us and answer any questions we had. The only thing I would have liked to have seen is some information about the cane fields that was originally there and how that was grown and harvest. Was definately worth the visit.

Both of the guides were knowledgeable and passionate about their topics. If I had to suggest anything, it would be nice to learn more about how sugar cane is grown/harvested. Would highly recommend
