Amazing Museum, Mediocre Experience

Amazing museum, mediocre experience. We've recently been to the Louvre and the British Museum, the former with a guided tour. We've done many guided tours in the past. The hope is to get a guide that is very passionate about the museum, which we certainly got. Unfortunately, he didn't seem to know much or care to tell as much about the actual pieces in the museum. We got a lot of personal anecdotes and a few stories about how the Museum obtained certain pieces. Nothing specifically about the pieces themselves. The couple that was with us asked a few questions about certain pieces, for which he had no answer (despite reportedly working for the museum for the past 40+ years). For instance, he didn't point out or tell a story about a single painting. We paid for a 2-hour tour but he was ready to be done with us at 1 hour in and kept asking if we wanted to see anything else. We said we wanted to see the Renaissance area, he brought us up there and left us unceremoniously at an hour and 30 minutes in. The sad part is, we were ready for him to go. Extremely nice guy, amazing museum, not a great guide.

Because of weather in NYC, we switched our Met day (and to Cicerone Travel's tour) at the last minute, from another very well reviewed similar tour. We were cautiously optimistic it would be comparable and we found it to simply outstanding. Jonathan, our guide, contacted us prior with instructions on finding the tour, breezing through security, etc. We had about 13 people in the group and it was a good size, could move around easily, yet hear everything. Jonathan was knowledgeable, well prepared, easy to understand and interested in the group's members. We saw literally the best highlights of the Met, yet still were there for several hours, moving at an efficient pace. No reservations in recommending this tour to anyone interested in seeing The Met (and not getting lost/sidetracked in the process).

The Met Museum would have overwhelmed us and we wouldn’t have known where to start so hence why we booked a private tour. Jonathan was totally brilliant , clearly knows his subject inside out and explained things in a fun and interesting way. A lovely Guide who we can’t recommend highly enough!

Our tour guide, Mark, was awesome. Having an expert in the art, artist and all other subtle things surrounding a piece is the only way truest enjoy the MET. Laura and I loved the way Mark asked our group questions to make us think and truly engaged us.

We had a fantastic time touring the Met with Jonathan. He provided amazing insight into various pieces and answered our questions. Easy to communicate with before meeting up and was right on time. So glad he suggested going early as the line to get into the museum was VERY long with vaccine checking when we left later in the day. With such a huge museum it was wonderful to get to have someone show us the highlights and walk us around. Our time flew by! This is the only way to see this museum. We would tour with Jonathan again!
