This tour meets in Piazza Trilussa, by the statue of Trilussa on the right side of the square (with the river behind you). Your guide will be holding a green Walks sign. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of your tour.

What To Expect

Meet your guide at the Monumento a Trilussa and listen to a brief introduction about Rome's underground catacombs.

From there, board an air-conditioned minibus and ride through the streets of Rome toward the ancient Appian Way. Enjoy an intimate tour of the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian or an equivalent mausoleum in a group of 18 people or less.

One last stop awaits, to the Parco degli Acquedotti. See the 11 ancient Roman aqueducts that lend this off-the-beaten-track urban park its name before getting dropped off back in Rome’s city center.

Catacombs worth a visit

Guide was knowledgeable and did a good job. Seeing the catacombs was interesting and also it was cool to see the city walls on the ride out of the city. The bone crypt was not as expected. It is located in the city, and is not really in an underground crypt as I would have expected. Honestly, that part of the tour could be skipped.

Disappointing

Disappointing in that for what is described as a three hour experience of catacombs is in reality only about 20 minutes in a catacomb, with the rest of the time spent in transit and in churches/chapels. We did not go to the Bone Chapel, and there was no explanation.

I think the skip the line...

I think the skip the line is not what it seems. You can arrive before the Vatican Museum opens around 7:15am and stay in line until 8Am- as we did. We entered with everyone else. The tour was very subjective to the taste of our guide and she skipped over many things we personally liked. Questions were encouraged but not practical because the tour was already so long. We walked almost four miles. It’s not accessible for all bodies. I think you can buy the tickets ahead of time and get the elevator to the top of the basilica cúpula and you don’t need the guide.

The catacombs with Andrea

Our tour guide was Andrea, he was funny, informative and sensitive to the needs of the group. Along with information about the Capuchin Monks, the Catacombs of St. Sebastian and the aqueducts he had an incredible canon of anectdotal experience that he shared with us. We found out the end of the tour that he had lived in a town not far from our own in the states. All in all, a great experience.

Fascinating history with an endless crypt.

The tour offered more than the crypts and catacombs, which were very interesting. First, you are driven out of the city, see some sights, the ancient city wall and gate (awesome), and then the church and crypts. That tour is given by a local expert, very informative, and you quickly figure out just how impossible that labyrinth is. Dank, extensive, and haunting, ending in an ancient pagan necropolis. Then, we were taken back to Rome via a park that holds an intact aqueduct, which was a nice unexpected bonus. Then the bone chapel, which was more creepy than I was expecting. They really built chapels out of the bones of their brethren, and prayed under a wall festooned with pelvic wings and angels made out of vertebrae. Fascinating stuff, and well worth the time. A great addition to an archaeology focused vacation.

This tour was so interesting!! Our tour guide was very knowledgable. She is an archeologist and had so much information to share. Both the bone crypt and the catacombs were fascinating.
