What To Expect

It is said that a manifestation of the Lady Virgin appeared to a peasant man on top of Tepeyac Hill in 1531. This led to the miraculous imprinting of her image on the man’s tilma, or cloak, and then the shrine being constructed in her honor—what is now called the Shrine of Guadalupe, located in the northern reaches of Mexico City. With more than 20 million annual visitors, the shrine is one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Your tour begins with meeting your guide at a central location in Mexico City. Climb aboard a comfortable vehicle that takes you to the shrine, formally known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Upon arrival, admire the different architecture of the shrine’s two basilicas. At Basílica Antigua (Old Basilica), built in 1709, discover Spanish colonial architecture with Moorish influence. The miraculous tilma, along with devotional paintings, are on display inside. Then visit the New Basilica, completed in 1976, designed with a circular floor plan that gives you a view of the Virgin from any spot inside the church.

Observe pilgrims stream into the main aisle—for some of the older visitors you see, this is a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Learn about the importance of the Virgin in Mexican culture both as a religious and cultural symbol. Next, head up Tepeyac Hill, where the miraculous events all began. Then, explore the museum behind the Old Basilica containing 4,000 pieces of 17th-century religious art.

Wrap up your visit with some free time to attend mass or stroll about the area on your own. Your tour ends with transport back to the departure point in Mexico City.

Seeing the Tilma of St Juan Diego and climbing up the Tepeyac hill and the Basillica which can seat more than 10,000 worshippers..our guide was very knowledgeable...
Good tour but it needs to be earlier
peggy_e, Nov 2023
The tour guide was great Viator/Amigas, please schedule this tour earlier so that we can see more of the area around the basilica. We saw the main building and one other but did not have time for the other churches nor the hill. If the tour started at 1:00 that would be enough time to enjoy all that the area has to offer. The buildings close at 5:00 so we have less than an hour to see those that we saw but we were rushed.

While many folks were booked for the tour only I showed up. That didn’t stop the guide from taking me around! Highly knowledgeable and strongly recommend.
Our wonderful experience in Mexico

Everything was so important, every detail was incredibly and what it make me feel worry is about how the cathedral is sinking a bit every year 😞

I wanted to not only visit the shrine but also to be able to pray while we were there and our guide Ligia accommodated us very well. She was very knowledgeable of the history of each of the apparition points and she very kindly waited with us for the services. The transportation service was excellent and we would recommend this tour for anyone who wants to visit this shrine and make a pilgrimage out of it.
Response from Host, Sep 2022
Dear Gillian_A, we are so glad to read you and realize you had a nice time with our dear partners and we hope to see you again shortly! Ivana, Amigo Tours
Wonderful tour of Guadalupe Shrine
Bobby_D, Jul 2022
It was our first time in Mexico City and looked forward to our tour of the Guadalupe Shrine. We were not disappointed!! Our guide was Mirian and Joseluis drove for us. (spelling?) They were not only professional and knowledgeable, they were quite pleasant and friendly. We always felt safe and the Shrine should be a part of anyone's visit to Mexico City. It's a bit of a drive from the downtown area but so well worth it. I also got a real sense of the pride our hosts had for the Shrine and their city...

Dear Amig@ Thank you for your comments. We are very sorry for this situation. We apologize and we will review this issue with our team. Dulce, Amigo Tours
Excellent and Meaningful Tour
Catherinewilliams, Jul 2018
My tour to the Shrine was excellent in every way. Jocelyn was very knowledgeable about all topics concerning the origins and history of the story of Juan Diego and the Virgin of Guadalupe. More than that, she was a great teacher on many other topics of Mexican history and cultures, past and present. She was eager to respond to all questions I had, and her explanations encouraged me to do more research and study on many issues. Plus, it was a delight to have her as my guide. Thank you for a great afternoon.

This tour was pretty cool the timing was perfect and we happened to be the only ones participating so it turned into a private tour. The tour guide was very sweet and we really enjoyed her. We got a lot of time to take pictures while getting a little history in. You could probably do this tour on your own, however, if you have a strict agenda you want to stick with I do recommend this tour.

We very much enjoyed our tour of the Shrine of Guadalupe! Gabriel, our tour guide, was very informative and was very patient while we asked him several questions about the Virgen and the miracle that occurred at the site. We checked out the chapels, the old Basilica and new the Basilica. We were grateful that the tour was not cancelled, even though my wife and I were the only ones that booked the tour. Highly recommend the tour!

Gabriela M, Nov 2017
DO NOT book any tours from Amigos Tours! They are the most incompetent and rude company we have ever encountered. We have traveled all over the world and booked a lot of tours from Viator and have never had any problems before. Unfortunately, this vendor should've never been recommended by this website, because they don't meet their quality standards. Viator, please stop recommending Amigos Tours! We booked an English tour which was supposed to go from 3pm - 5pm. First of all, their offices are located inside a youth hostel in a very hard to find street of the historic area, in a very hidden, back room office. Everyone that works there is very rude, unorganized, incompetent and don't even want to talk to you or answer any questions. We came in on time and were rudely kicked out and told to wait in the downstairs youth hostel waiting area, which was dirty and smelled gross. Then, when the tour guide showed up LATE, he didn't even acknowledge us or give us any updates on the tour details. He just sat down and looked at his cell phone. The bus was almost an hour late and the guide didn't even speak English. We decided to give them the benefit of the doubt since we had been waiting for over an hour and I spoke Spanish, so I could translate for my family. When we finally got to the shrine it had been almost two hours late and a lot of the church sites and museums were closing. The tour guide was just looking at his cell phone and didn't even know anything about the history or details of the church. He couldn't even answer any of our questions regarding the history, names or dates! Then, to top it all off, we had a small group of 8 people including my family of 4, but he still managed to lose one of the couples that were in our group and didn't even know they were missing until we made him aware of it! We wasted the entire day and missed our dinner reservations that evening, so we just decided to take an Uber back to our hotel, instead of waiting another hour for their bus to pick us up from the shrine, which was late again! PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS TOUR CO. You will regret it!
We really lucked out with our tour...
MARGARET R, Jul 2017
We really lucked out with our tour. We, a couple, were the only persons scheduled the day we went. As a result our guide was able to provide us superb attention and did so. It was more like having a conversation, than a tour with all our questions being answered. We were surprised at the immensity of the facilities associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe and the multiple churches on the grounds. There is much more to see than you would expect. It is also beautifully landscaped. There is a plaza that reminded me of Tiananmen Square in size. In December as many as 6 million people have come to this place. Our guide was a young woman and she was wonderful, with excellent English skills. This is an easy tour with time going back and forth and attending a service in the basilica. One note, the climb to the original chapel is at the top of Tepeyac hill and does require some moderate exertion, but it is well maintained stairs and offers beautiful views. There are cheaper ways to see this site, but I feel we received superb service left at 3 p and returned around 6:30, I believe, and overall certainly received our 24 U.S. worth. This is one of those tours that really depends on one's interest in the site, but as one of the most visited religious pilgrimage sites in the world, certainly worth considering. No regrets here. Missed it on my last trip to Mexico City many years ago and wasn't going to this time. Fotos are allowed everywhere except the original chapel.
