What To Expect

After hotel pickup in New Orleans, you're driven to the Oak Alley Plantation, located among the Great River Road sugar plantations alongside the Mississippi River. On arrival, stroll under majestic, 300-year-old oak trees leading up to the antebellum Big House, and take a tour of the opulent mansion with a guide dressed in period costume. The Greek Revival architecture was built in 1837 and later restored in 1925.

Wander the 25-acre (10-hectare) grounds at your own pace during your free time. Visit the blacksmith shop, snap photos of antique farm equipment, or peruse exhibits on slavery and the Civil War. Grab lunch and beverages at the restaurant or cafe (own expense) before the tour moves to the swamp.

Next, board the bus and drive to the site of your swamp tour. On arrival, board a 16-passenger airboat with stadium-style seating for a high-speed adventure through the swamp. You'll have unobstructed views of wildlife, including an up-close look at the star attraction: alligators.

Your captain is experienced at searching out these reptiles, even during hibernation in colder months. The airboat, propelled by a large fan that blows air from the back of the vessel, can produce speeds of up to 35 mph (56 kph). You'll ride in just inches of water into parts of the swamp that are inaccessible to traditional boats or vehicles.

Bucket list stuff
nicogibson92, Apr 2024
The whole trip was sensational, however I thought the swamp tour was next level. We opted for the airboat tour which I highly recommend and our swamp tour operator was a guy called Dewey. He was extremely knowledgeable about the swamp lands and knew all the spots, can’t thank him enough.
Alligators
Nancy_H, Apr 2024
The guides and bus drivers were wonderful. Seeing the alligators was a lot of fun and holding the baby alligator was awesome.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Nancy!
Great day!
Nadim_T, Apr 2024
Fun fun day! The airboat was so cool in the bayou, it was such a cool experience and Captain Dewey was awesome sharing the beautiful culture of Louisiana. The plantation was very nice, impressive as well as learning the history of slavery by visiting the plantation, which was mind opening. Thank you for making this tour.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review!
Amazing tours!
Lynn_S, Apr 2024
We enjoyed both tours, though my favorite part was holding a baby gator! All of the swamp tour was amazing. Personally, I enjoyed the outside part of Oak Alley than the house tour. You hear about the atrocities that the slaves had to endure, but seeing everything is a different matter.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Lynn!
Fun on the bayou
Beth_F, Apr 2024
Oak Alley was beautiful. You do need to keep moving though to see the house tour and grounds. Loved the airboat. Outstanding guide. Saw lots of gators
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Beth!
Great day!
Stacy_G, Apr 2024
Great experience! Oak Alley is beautiful and the tour gave you just enough information. Airboat ride was awesome-our guide new the bayou so well and was able to show us different nests as well as his relationship with the gators!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Stacy!
More time needed at plantation
Donna_S, Apr 2024
Very beautiful, but unfortunately not enough time there. Needed more time to be able to listen to the talk about the slaves. We were unable to do this as house tour overlapped and then we were due back at the bus. More time needed here please.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for your feedback. A total of 2 hours is allotted at the plantation and it includes a self-guided and guided portion. Unfortunately, we do not have control over the tour at the plantation, as we only provide the transportation portion. We do understand that some prefer more time there. However, we will gladly forward the feedback to Oak Alley. In the future, we do recommend you driving yourself to the plantation so that you can spend more time to explore for the self-guided portion. Thank you.
I would rate the swamp...
Cheryl_K, Apr 2024
I would rate the swamp tour with 10 stars if I could. It was fun, entertaining and educational. The guide was hilarious. The plantation tour was just OK…the tour guide was nice enough, but difficult to understand.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the positive feedback, Cheryl!
Great combo experience
Kelly_G, Apr 2024

Very good tour choice
Aaron_L, Apr 2024
This experience was great. For the swamp tour we really got out and moved around and saw something like 20 alligators and really interesting birds and it was fun cruising around on the airboat. The plantation was interesting and I enjoyed walking around the grounds. I recommend the tour.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Aaron!
The Plantation tour would...
Stephanie_A, Apr 2024
The Plantation tour would have been better if there was a guided tour outside also. It was fine to wander but having a guide with more information to share would have made it better. The swamp tour was great! The kids loved seeing all gators and the guide made the ride fun for everyone. The only bummer on this one is the long bus rides. We thought it was still a day well spent!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Stephanie!
Good trip
Colette_M, Apr 2024
Both excursions were well worth it. The only slight complaint was the several bus transfers. But bus drivers were very friendly and did their best to keep things moving.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the positive feedback, Colette!
Outstanding
Damon_W, Apr 2024
Outstanding trip from start to finish and great value for money. Seeing the crocs in their own habitat and not in a zoo was great. Big shout out to Rocky the captain of our boat top man.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Damon!
Best tour I’ve ever done!
Sarah_V, Apr 2024
Let me start by saying we did as many tours as we could fit into a week. This one was our favorite. If you are a nature lover, this is the swamp tour for you. We actually did two different swamp tours and this one killed it. Jason was our tour guide and he was awesome. He knew all there was to know about the different areas, swamp, marsh, bayou. We learned so much about alligators, and even got to hold a baby alligator! The drivers were very respectful and informative, and the plantation was amazing to tour. Thank you so much to Jason and everyone else involved!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Sarah!
So Worth It
Shannon_W, Apr 2024
Oak Alley was beautiful! The grounds and exhibits were well done and informative. And the trees!! Walking the alley made me feel like I was stepping back in time! My one quibble was with the docent with the Mohawk. He told us we couldn't take pictures inside the house, even without the flash, as it would "damage the antiques." He was pretty condescending when I asked him about it, too. If you don't want us taking pictures inside, fine, but don't use bs reasons to a science teacher! The airboat ride was super fun! We saw lots of gators and Captain Ernie was very knowledgeable and informative! Highly recommend!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Shannon!
Fun time. Memories made.
Eddie_E, Apr 2024
We enjoyed it. It is a long day. the bus driver was crazy. I saved him from rear ending a car on the bridge heading home. He was looking elsewhere and didn't see it. The home was fascinating. The swamp tour was GREAT! the air boat ride was fabulous. We saw so many things, including holding an alligator. We would do this again...with better planning like some snacks or drinks. Plenty of bus time going and coming.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the feedback. Safety is our number one priority, so please call us at 504-689-3599 to give us additional details about the driver so that we can further address the issue.
Plantation meh, airboat ride awesome!!
Isaac_R, Mar 2024
Fun tour. We had a super sweet old bus driver. The plantation wasn't that interesting and mostly consisted of a tour of the main house, but the swamp airboat ride was awesome!! Rode around in it for a couple hours, saw some gators, and generally had a good time. If I were to do it again, I'd probably skip the plantation and just tour the bayou a bit longer.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for the positive feedback, Isaac!
Take the Airboat Tour
Windie_K, Mar 2024
I would rate Oak Ally as 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ the grounds of Oak Ally were amazing the history was very 1 sided with the personal guides. I would rate our Airboat Tour as 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ captain Erine was Fantastic! Not only did he make sure we were able to see alligators during a time of the day when they are sleeping he educated us on them from what they eat, when they mate and how the females lay their eggs! He also made sure we knew about this area and how important the water way is to the Northern US. Simply a wonderful time!
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Thank you for the positive feedback!
Fantastic trip
Jane_M, Mar 2024
Earnie is the most wunderful guide at the airboat. He took us sailing in the swamps and told us a lot about the gators and the habitats and with a good sense of humour. The plantage was interesting and good to learn about the history.
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Thank you for the five-star review, Jane!
Breathtaking
Sophea_T, Mar 2024
The swamp portion in the airboat was an amazing experience. The views are breathtaking. My teen found this the most enjoyable portion of our New Orleans trip.
