What To Expect

Your historic plantation tour departs mid‐day from the French Quarter. Settle into a comfortable seat on the air‐conditioned coach and prepare for a journey back to the Old South, before the American Civil War shook the foundation of plantation‐life. Enjoy lively onboard commentary from your guide as you trace the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain and Great River Road en route to Oak Alley Plantation, one of the most photographed plantations ever.

Upon arrival, stroll though a postcard‐perfect canopy of 28 knotty oak trees – each over 250 years old! – that line the promenade to the mansion. Built in 1839, the ‘Big House’ is a perfectly restored example of antebellum elegance and Greek Revival architecture. Your knowledgeable guides, donning period costumes, will provide colorful commentary about the estate and some of its former inhabitants. Tour the opulent rooms of this classic southern home that has been the setting for Interview with a Vampire and Primary Colors, then continue on your own to wander the enchanting grounds or grab a refreshment in the cafe and ice cream parlor (own expense). Then relax as your coach returns to the French Quarter, arriving by late‐afternoon.

Lovely and historic
Sue_W, Apr 2024
Loved the gardens and trees. Beautiful property. Would have loved to see the kitchen. The furniture and antiques were lovely. The porch is awesome.
Nice trip
Joanne_K, Apr 2024
Maribelle (not Richard LOL) was a great bus driver. She taught us a lot as we drove to the plantation and even slowed down enough for us to take some shots along the way. We enjoyed seeing the plantation and learning about it's history. Definitely a worthwhile trip out of the city.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thanks Joanne. We want the tour to entertain and educate, as well as an enjoyable time out of the city.
Beautiful and historical, worth a visit
Beena_G, Apr 2024
I Learnt a lot about the history of plantations and slavery. Oak Alley plantation is beautiful and a well preserved part of American history
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you so much.
Very informative
Nicole_K, Apr 2024
I really liked how they brought up and discussed how the slaves were evolved in life on the plantation. The owners were mentioned but it was much more focused on their perspective and what they lived though.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
It is a big story to tell and we want everyone to appreciate a look into the past.

We enjoyed Alton’s comments during the bus ride to & from the plantation. We learned so much about the area!

Just what a tour should deliver. Thank you
Oak Alley
Sara_B, Apr 2024
Beautiful, immaculate grounds & house. Live oak alley is awesome. Would have appreciated more information in the tour description regarding timing. It was nice to have plenty of time to explore the grounds and gift shop and get a quick bite to eat. The tour inside the home was a bit rushed, only 20 minutes. Although the tour guide was gracious, informative and invited questions, she mentioned several times how we needed to keep moving as there were many people coming through that day. There were about 25-30 in our tour, a little cramped in each spot with little time and space move about, especially in the artifacts room.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
We regret that the tour of the inside of the home felt rushed. The ownership of the plantation do their best to allocate more time to tours even on busy spring days.
Don't miss this Planation Tour.
Michelle_F, Apr 2024
The guides were extremely knowledgeable about the families that lived on the plantation and the history of the families.

The 28 live oak trees...
Regina_S, Apr 2024
The 28 live oak trees lining the path to the front door. Plenty of historical information about life on a Plantation and of the family.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you.
Not for us
Yael_C, Apr 2024
We did not love our tour. It was 1.5 hours on the bus watching a video which was not particularly informative. We then had two hours at oak alley plantation to stroll with a 30 minute tour of the house. We were hoping for more history on immigration, the civil war and slavery, instead it focused more on the history of the house, the family who lived in it, and the house post the civil war. It was a very long tour and we did not get much out of it. It may be for other people but just wasn’t for us!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Plantations were agricultural and quite a distance from the cities (like modern day farms). As we tell in our information, this plantation dwells on the agriculture, the history of the family, with some information on the culture and the enslaved people. Another near by plantation focuses on the personal stories of slavery and the civil war.

Alton was a great driver - very informative and entertaining. Oak Alley - house and grounds are lovely. Glad we had time to visit.

We are glad you joined us on a trip to the "country"
No AC on bus
Dimeco_C, Apr 2024
The property was nice and well kept. Staff were pleasant and knowledgeable. The bus we took to and from the plantation did not have AC that functioned properly. It was extremely hot and uncomfortable the entire trip.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Our apologies that the air conditioning did not work on the bus. Because of the distance they may not have been able to replace it in time to meet the tour at the plantation.
A must see!
alicemortiz, Apr 2024
The driver, Alton, was very knowledgeable and funny. He gave us a lot of information regarding New Orleans on the drive to the plantation, which took a little over an hour. We had two hours while inside, which includes a 30 min tour of inside the mansion. The grounds also has a little pop up bar, a restaurant, and a gift shop with snacks. Overall it was a positive experience.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Great to see such a nice review. Much of the garden should have been in bloom as well.
Oak Alley plantation tour - highly recommend!
Joseph_C, Apr 2024
Can't say enough good things about the Oak Alley Plantation tour that my wife and I booked while we were visiting New Orleans. From start to finish, it was an easy and pleasant experience. The driver, Bryant, was great and made the long drive to and from the plantation quick and enjoyable. We were so happy to not have to rent a car to get to the plantation. The only improvement I can think of would be if the bus company (Grey Line) could have picked us up at the hotel like what other tours do, but overall, this is minor.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thanks Joseph for the nice review. We do not do the pickups as it would add as much as another hour for our guests as they go hotel to hotel before and after.
Oak Alley Plantation has...
DianePhamLe, Apr 2024
Oak Alley Plantation has a very good and beautiful energy there. I'll always remember those oak trees! Most people assume plantations are negative though that's not always the case, FYI most stories/history people hear are folklore. Pros: (1) Enough time to take pictures around the plantation and self-tour a bit (2) Transportation was smooth to and from the plantation (3) Tour guide was kind & shared decent stories (4) There's a souvenir shop w/refreshments Cons: Out of all the plantation tours I've been on this one was super short in that we didn't get to see much inside during the guided tour. The guide said a lot of the rooms were unavailable to view, if that's the case I think it would've been better to not have such a large group to take more time inside of what we could view. It was overly packed in this group which made it hard to move around smoothly and hear everything the guide shared.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Diane, thank you for your input and for touring with Gray Line. We will pass on your comments to the Oak Alley management who arranges the tours in the house.
Great tour, well organized
Geoff_H, Apr 2024
Well organized and beautiful plantation with somber insights into the slavery era. Would recommend for anyone considering this type of tour.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thanks Geoff.

I was disappointed that...
Patricia_M, Apr 2024
I was disappointed that np pictures were allowed inside the home. We have been to Thomas Jefferson's and George Washingtons plantations where pictures were allowed.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
The plantation management has had that rule in place for a number of years. We will certainly share this review with them.
