Family tour included 2 elderly persons with scooters
    Catuscia_C, Apr 2024
Ismael and his team were AMAZING! We did the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins excursion in Costa Maya. We are a family of 6. We had 2 elderly family members with us. From the moment we booked, Ishmael was incredibly responsive and helpful. We brought along two mobility scooters, and they handled everything with professionalism and care. They even collapsed the scooters to fit comfortably in the van. Throughout the tour, Ishmael and his team took exceptional care of us, ensuring that both my elderly mother and aunt felt included and well-cared for. Their attention to detail and genuine kindness made our experience truly memorable. Five stars all around!
    Excellent tour !

Excellent tour. Our guide Rafa did a great job explaining the history of the ruins, different vegetation and monkeys . Very knowledgeable and very patient with kids asking questions. I highly recommend it.
    Great Excursion

We decided to book through this vendor based on the great reviews. There weren’t a ton which made us nervous but we were so glad we did. It was great and saved us money. We were a family of 5 and there was only one other couple on this excursion. They were kind and very informational right from the start. They greeted us with cold water and explained exactly what we would expect. Because we were a small group, we were able to leave right away and get to the ruins before all the other big tours. During the tour, the guide provided so much great information and answered all our questions. On our way back we stopped at a pineapple stand and got some fresh pineapple. We were dropped off at the port with plenty of time to walk around for a bit and get in the ship with plenty of time.
    Mayan Love

At first, I was weary since it was a little difficult to find the Costa Maya Excursions "office"; however, the locals were very kind and helped to lead us to the location. Ishmael was wonderful. He made the experience very memorable and was very knowledgable. Our group had children and he was patient with their questions and gave a hands on experience in showing how the the Mayans made the red mortar. We also stopped at a local stand for fresh pineapple and cakes. We didn't want to head back to the ship, so he recommended a restaurant on the water. The food was delicious. Overall, I would recommend this tour for families or anyone interested in a nice day excursion.
    Wonderful

    Elite tour operators

We had Ismael as our main guide and his helped Jaimer (sp?) and they were both fantastic. Before the ruins, we got to see (from the van) parts of a Mayan Village, and Ismael was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. At the ruins, both guides were able to provide a lot of context of the area, which was not just one pyramid structure but an entire town of ruins. They explained how the ones that we see today are reconstructed with their original bases, and how the hills around the area are actually also ruins that have not been reconstructed or "restored". They also knew about the local flora and fauna, and showed us a melipona bee nest and gave us tiny samples of melipona honey! Throughout the trip, they sourced local pineapple, papaya, and coconut water for us! They actually stopped on the side of the road and hacked coconuts open and served us the water in cups. It was a very Costa Rican experience and with 12 people on our group, it was a perfect excursion.

The best tour of our cruise! Booked the Chacchoben Ruins and we were lucky to have Ismael and his daughter as our driver/guides. They were full of knowledge and good information as we drove to the ruins. Once at the ruins, admission was included and Ismael took us on a guided tour of the area. On the way back we drove through his villiage, got fresh coconut water and pineapple! It was a great trip and loved every minute of it!
    Rafael and Brian great guys
    Steve_D, Jan 2024
Both Bryan the guide and Rafael the driver were very accommodating. Very knowledgeable. We got to laugh. They were very patient with the kids. It’s amazing how much local history they were able to share with us.
Exactly What We Were Looking For
    Christian_P, Jan 2024
Amazing experience, we went into this thinking it would be a “budget tour” and in reality it was the best one for us. We met outside of the port and the guides take small groups in each van. Since this tour is smaller groups, we beat the rush in and out, got a more personable experience and got to eat at some local stands. I would recommend this to anyone, do yourself a favor and book this tour over the others! It’s a better deal and better experience, unless you want to get stuck with 50+ groups on the mass tour busses
    Great excursion in Costa Maya
    Oliver_D, Jan 2024
Took this tour on a cruise w/ the Harmony of the Seas. Costa Maya Experiences, the operator of this tour, was fairly easy to find. They sent a map, directions, and verified my booking via email. Just be aware that the Costa Maya port itself is probably the most confusing port -- you have to leave the port area to find the Costa Maya experiences office, and in order to leave the port they make you walk all the way to the end of the port (which is arranged in some strange semi-circle) and then you can finally find them. Our meeting time wasn't some exact time, but posted as "within 1 hr of the ship disembarkation." My advice for next time is that their drivers assign guides and tour buses leave as groups of 12-13 are made. The earlier you arrive, the earlier you'll get paired up and able to leave on your excursion. You likely won't get left behind if you aim to get there at the later part of that hour, but it might take longer to get on your exursion as you're waiting for other stragglers in order to make up a group large enough to fill a tour bus. Our guide Ezekiel and driver Jorge were amazing. They provided us water on the way there and back (which was helpful since it was fairly hot, even in December). Ezekiel was very knolwedgable, even a direct descendant of the Mayas themselves, and he spoke Mayan and taught us the Mayan counting system. When we got to the ruins we learned about the history of how they were made and were able to take many photos. It was a good value for the tour, much better than if we booked through the cruiseline. When the tour was over, we were driven back to the port, with plenty of time to spare to peruse the port itself before heading back to the ship. Also, if you're like me and use # of reviews to sort of grade the excursions -- don't worry about this one. Even though there are only about 50 reviews on Viator at the time I'm writing this, there were quite a few people taking excursions from this office on the day we took our tour, so this is a reputable company. We were a group of 4 and our group was total about 13. From what I saw, the tour group had at least 10 buses of groups of 8-13.
    Great Experience!

What a wonderful experience. Our guide Ishmael was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable and accommodating. One of our party was in a wheelchair and at multiple points in the tour Ishmael offered to push the chair while pointing out points at the historical site. We would definitely recommend to anyone looking for some historical enjoyment while visiting.

    Good excursion
    tai_c, Sep 2023
Walked out of the cruise compound, found the fake pyramid, and vendor was right next to it in a large shack, though the name was hard to read. They have new and clean vans with strong AC. Took us to the ruins and good narrative. Stopped for pineapples and coconut. Exactly as expected.

Hello, there we are very glad you took the experience with us...we like to work very hard for your satisfaction....
    Nice ruins
    Michael_M, Sep 2023
Ezekiel had way too much to talk about. He wanted to talk about the moon and planting things and trees and a little about the ruins.
    Excursion Fun!
    Marisol_S, Sep 2023
Our tour guide Rafael was amazing! He was able to provide us with a very personal experience and answer all our questions. After the tour, we stopped for some pineapple and it was a great ending to our excursion. With their flexible hours we were not in a rush to arrive or get to departure.
Great tour with the best guide
    Taylor_R, Aug 2023
Octavio was an amazing tour guide. He knew the answer to every question we asked and also knew how to get away from the crowds to give us the best experience possible. He met the five of us and was ready to leave immediately to drive to Chacchoben. Our driver was also wonderful, unfortunately, I cannot recall his name. Amazing people and amazing experience. I highly recommend.
    Communication could have been better
    Denise_A, Aug 2023
The communication before, during, and after the tour could have been better. I was provided an arrival time for my tour by Viator. The tour operator never responded to my inquiry and did not seem to know I had a tour scheduled. Once the tour began, our tour guide, Ezekial, provided a thorough explanation of Mayan history/culture. However, the ruins site was very crowded, and the tour operator had several tours, so our tour was cut short. Our group was fine with an abbreviated tour because it was extremely hot. However, once we boarded the tour we sat on the bus without air or open windows for at least fifteen minutes before people became upset and demanded to leave. We were informed two people were missing from another company tour bus and we were unable to depart until these guests were found. After the bus went to find the missing people, we were finally able to depart the site. However, the bus stopped again. This time the driver got out and had lunch. He returned with bags of fresh pineapple for everyone. I am sure he was well-intentioned; however, we did not know where he went, and it was very uncomfortable on the bus without air conditioning. By the time we arrived back a passenger was yelling at other guests for complaining, which almost caused a physical altercation. Everyone was hot and frustrated, but the extra drama did not help. The tour could have been greatly improved it the guides and drivers would simply explain what is going on so the guests can make informed choices.

We had a fun memorable time
    David_J, Jun 2023
Ishmael was very help pre trip and during the trip. We had 27 people in our group and they accommodated us very well. They also helped us appreciate the culture of the area. The kids and adults in our group loved it.
A Great Day at Chacchoben Ruins
    Denise_M, May 2023
Our tour guide, Ismael educated us on some of the Mayan culture as we looked at the ancient ruins. The ruins are worth seeing as they are part of history and are amazing to view. Ismael's passion for the ruins was apparent as he spoke, We also got to meet his sister, Patty and her husband, Gustavo who were very informative about Chacchoben and Mahahual. We highly recommend this tour.
    Ruins, Pineapple and Tamales!
    roslyntorella, Mar 2023
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Our guide Raffael was knowledgeable and pleasant. We arrived at the port and had a little trouble finding the pick up point - you have to get completely out of the shopping area, exit the port and walk along the pedestrian path. It was further than we thought - but well worth the effort. When we arrived at the pick up point we were given nice cold bottles of water! Our driver Moises was also excellent and stopped at a pineapple stand on the way back to the port - we had a chance to sample the sweet pineapple for $2. The ruins are well excavated and the pathways make it a pleasant stroll. Our guide pointed out a little lady selling her tamales at the entrance of the site and we stopped on our way out to buy some! They were excellent - steamed in plantain leaves!! I highly recommend them, her red sauce was amazing too! A lunchtime bargain for $2. I highly recommend this tour!
