We decided not to drive the Road to Hana so we could both enjoy the views. So glad we booked this tour! Our driver/tour guide was Lei and she provided general interesting facts About Hawaii. She was a very capable driver and pointed out items along the way that we would have never seen if driving She was also told funny stories along the way. Nice lunch included.

Highly recommend!!! Our family of 10 was lucky enough to have a private tour with the best guide…Damien “Local Boy”. The weather was beautiful and the trip was smooth from start to finish! Being born and raised in Maui, Local boy is the best person to have as your guide, he knew everything about the island, from the flowers to the birds to the locals. The road to Hana is a must while visiting the island. At the end of our tour our group could not stop talking about the day with the “Local boy”. And the road to Hana!

In a vechicle all day long

My driver made this tour. Very experienced and knowledgeable. I would not recommend this tour. It is all day in a vechicle on windy, mountainous roads. You are sure to be very motion sick. It should be stressed more, all rain forest, woods.

Wendy was a great tour guide. Since she grew up in Hana and learned at a early age to drive the roads she was a great driver! She knew so many people along the tour. She spent the appropriate time at each stop. Wendy had many stories to tell during the tour because of she grew up there. She was funny and knowledge. One of the best Hawaiian tour guides we had!

A great trip with so many beautiful and varied stops - forests, flowers, cliffs, beaches, waterfalls and Green turtles on the beach. As there were only 4 of us the tours was flexible with us having input in to the stops and for how long. Kemi (not sure if that is how you spell it) was our guide and he was absolutely fabulous. He was very knowledgeable, kind and thoughtful. Very recommended.

Dangerous van

Unfortunately, after a very nice day with our guide Fedor, I discovered that our lives were put at risk due to warn down and dangerous front tires on our van. This equipment should not have been on the road, especially on such a dangerous road as Hana highway

Worst experience ever and I will never do this again. Our Driver continuously fell asleep while driving, smashed our van three times and was driving way too fast in the mountains. My family as well as other passengers were deathly afraid. I paid almost 1k and felt like a day of our vacation and our money was wasted. I would never recommend this experience to anyone and will never use these services again! And our driver demanded a very high tip from everyone at the beginning of the trip, constantly smoked, and spit out the window which I felt was very unprofessional. I’m not out a thousand dollars and a very frightening and scary experience on vacation. My wife actually was trying to talk to the driver to keep him awake, at one point he almost ran straight into a brick wall up in the mountains during the tour. NEVER AGAIN!!

Aloha Kari Mahalo for your review. We apologize for your experience and would not recommend it to anyone either. Keep in mind that 20mph does seem fast to anyone that doesn’t know these roads, that is why local commuters get extremely frustrated when they travel twice that speed and come across people driving half that speed, so you must keep a comfortable pace until you find a little space to pull over for faster moving vehicles. The vehicle was missing a plastic snap on fender, but for a vehicle that was “smashed 3 times” and no tire or body damage, that is some very skillful driving, especially for a driver who “continuously fell asleep” Vehicle fenders get knocked off all the time as there are protruding rocks and branches in these little pull over spaces and extremely narrow one lane sections around blind turns and sometimes you either just don’t see them, or have a split second decision to scrape an oncoming vehicle mirror or hit a branch run over a rock or scrape a concrete barrier and concrete barriers don’t complain if you scrape them, even when they are surprisingly, in your lane, and we understand this. We have confirmed that at the end of the journey the driver seemed exhausted but did not fall asleep, you would not have made it back if the driver did. Although, feeling you’ve wasted money and a day on vacation, whilst fearing for your life, would not be a desirable experience, and we again do not wish that on anyone. Constantly spitting out of the window while driving is not only unprofessional and unsanitary but disgusting, and your driver did it once while stopped in traffic, still unacceptable. As far as “demanding” tips, that is also not acceptable. We will be sending out reminders to our newest drivers about this and if these behavioral patterns are found then they will be corrected. We will also remind them of unbecoming conduct. Again Mahalo for your review.

Beautiful views

Kumo was a great guide. He swam with the kids (13,10,7,5), jumped off one of the waterfalls with the kids, and played the ukulele for us. We loved black sand beach, banana bread, waterfalls, all the stops we did. The roads are very winding, if you get motion sickness, be sure to take something!

Great tour. We started early at 615am but that meant we beat the crowds at the waterfalls and black sand beaches where we could swim. Our driver was great - really safe and careful driving which I greatly appreciated. Loved the extra stop to see turtles too. Back by 3ish. Wonderful day.

Awful ride - motion sickness throughout the day

Although very expensive, we have booked this experience because we have read it is better to experience the road to Hana with a professional guide who knows what are the nice spots along the way. Hana and beyond was initially planned as a complete loop, however due to road conditions the portion after Hana was closed to the public, so we went back from Hana on the same road. We understand that part, and it was explained. The promise was that we would have extra stops to compensate for it. Our driver, Sean, seemed to be in a rush throughout the day. His driving was very agressive from the start, taking all turns as fast as possible, with agressive breaking along the way and getting rudely closed to other drivers. Our family of four was stuck in the back of the van, and we all felt sick very quickly. So we asked him to stop so we can have some air. I then asked him if I can sit in the front of the van with him, so the rest of the family can have a bit more space at the back of the van - as he did not initially offered it. It seemed to bother him, but he cleared the space for me. After I politely asked if he could drive a bit slower and more gently, and in a rude manner, he bluntly said ‘no - I am on a schedule, this is how the road is, just take the motion sickness patch if you are not ok’ - I replied ideally we would go without this, and asked again if he could at least make an effort, and again he bluntly said ‘no’. The tour was rushed throughout. We rushed through the waterfalls, 30 min. max allowed; we rushed through the banana shop, 10 min. max allowed; we rushed lunch at the black sand beach, 1h15 max allowed. We expected a few additional stops on the way back, since we did not go beyond Hana. He just made a quick toilet stop, and then a quick stop at the turtles (after the Hana road) to ‘compensate’ for the fact we did not go beyond Hana. In total, tour duration was 7:15 of motion sickness, and not the 9-10 hours advertised. So… the driver had plenty of time for a smoother ride… and a bit more time at each stop, which would made a world of difference. As far as the motion sickness, if all drivers with this company are like that, it should be clearly indicated as a warning that this is a tour that will give you motion sickness.

It was our drivers first day on the job but you couldn’t tell at all. He was very knowledgeable about the route and all of the trees/flowers, the area history, and each spot we stopped at. It was a bummer to have to go back the way we came because the road was closed, but other than that it was a very fun day!

Family Road to Hana trip

The tour driver Kimo was entertaining and gave us some fun facts. He made sure that we saw some of the local sites as well as the planned tour stops. The waterfalls were beautiful and the views while you are traveling up the mountain side are some of the best we saw during our trip. I'm giving it a 4 star rating only because part of the road just past Hana was still closed, so we could only go half way then had to turn back around to go back.

This was a long excursion, but it was worth it. Walter, our driver, is from Hawaii and lived many year in Hana. He did a wonderful job explaining what we were seeing, and the history of the area and its vegetation. We loved the stops. I do wish there were more stops, but that would make the trip so much longer! We had lunch at the park above the black sands beach. Lunch was a good size sub sandwich, chips, and a drink. There were also granola bars for a sweet something. We expected an opportunity to shop for souvenirs, but the stops didn’t really have that.
