What To Expect

Make your way to the meeting point in the French Quarter, and travel outside the city along the Mississippi River to the famous River Road, home to many of Louisiana’s antebellum plantations. After crossing the Bonnet Carre Spillway, built to absorb river flooding, take in a great vista of Lake Pontchartrain and pass by the historical estates of Evergreen, St. Joseph, and Felicity that once conducted trade in crops like cotton, sugarcane, and indigo.

When arriving at Whitney Plantation, a National Historic Landmark founded more than 260 years ago, feel a sense of stepping back in time. Learn about the harsh realities and legacy of the people who lived and worked at Whitney on a self-guided tour of the estate, including original and restored slave cabins and other outbuildings. See the well-preserved Big House, considered one of the best remaining examples of Spanish Creole architecture in Louisiana.

Read about the lives of Louisiana’s enslaved people in their own words through first-person narratives recorded by the Federal Writers' Project, and explore museum exhibits that help tell the story of slavery in the American South. After absorbing the poignant and powerful history of the estate and its centuries of human stories, return to New Orleans in the late afternoon.

Great tour wish it was longer
Anupurba_R, Apr 2024
Everything is well organized. The pick up and drop off was seamless. The bus driver gave us interesting anecdotes about NOLA on the drive to and back. At the plantation we were given audio guides and went through the tour at our own pace. The plantation museum itself is very well done, comprehensive and deals delicately with the tough subject matter. I only wish we could have had a bit more time. We had 2 hours from drop off to do our tour. 3 would be more appropriate.
Great experience

Very informative. I liked the self guided tour, bus driver was very informative as well. Great time.
Open your eyes to REAL lives of enslaved persons
Jennifer_C, Apr 2024
So much information and terrific detail; what an excellent experience. All Americans should visit the Whitney Plantation to learn the horrific lives enslaved peoples led; history books whitewash the truth. Knowledge is a powerful deterrent to repeating the past. Some improvement is needed in signage or have docents to better direct self-guided tour goers
Too expensive for what you really get
Eva_B, Apr 2024
I found the experience disappointing as I thought it will be a tour guide who will explain us much more things. I was expecting also more things to see and know much more about the life of the slaves. The main house is almost empty and also the shacks where the slaves used to live. For the money you pay it all goes into the transportation really as there's a big difference if you pay only the entrance price and you go with your own vehicle.
So powerful, it needs more time to absorb the history, horror and heroism
Patty_S, Apr 2024
Very deeply felt and presented plantation experience from the point of view of the enslaved people, rather than the "antebellum glamour" of the white owners. My only criticism--the tour should have allowed for another full hour of learning, contemplation and experience sharing. The Whitney project is that powerful, should not be shortchanged.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
The length of the tour is also dictated by the wonderful Whitney Project organization. Some people, like you, want some additional time and others need to return to the city. We try to find a comfortable medium.
Impactful learning tour
Devone_H, Apr 2024
Great learning experience, would recommend to anyone. From the on the road tour experience to the location itself, the tour bus driver was very funny and informative. Smooth experience.

The best Plantation Tour, a must see!!
Kristina_G, Apr 2024
The Whitney Plantation was amazing. The stories they tell there are heartbreaking, but bring the history to life and help us all understand the tragedies of slavery in such a beautiful way! Bryant our bus driver was also amazing, he was very knowledgeable and made it fun!!

Barbara_S, Apr 2024
It was all memorable but I especially liked reading the quote of the past slaves. The audio tour worked for me.

Thank you.
Moving experience.
Beverly_C, Apr 2024
I was deeply moved by seeing how horrible the experience of slaves was. The thoughtfulness of the art was very moving and helped me get in touch with the pain of slavery.

A true review of a visit to Whitney.
Unmissable visit
Monica_M, Apr 2024
The way of living in the plantation is very well described and you can feel you could be living in thar specific time.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
A revealing visit for many.
Wouldn't choose this plantation
Sandy_S, Apr 2024
I was very disappointed with the big house, there was nothing to see an u could only see a couple rooms. I expected old high ceilings, an more of how the house would be. We couldn't go upstairs. It was disappointing an wish we would've done a different plantation.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
The experience at Whitney is not promoted to be a grand home, but more on the daily life at that plantation. We note on our site that the second floor of the main house is not accessible to the public. If you would like to visit the architectural grandeur that some plantation homes showcase, we would recommend Oak Alley.

It is a heartfelt experience. Thank you for visiting.
A Very Moving Experience
Katherine_S, Apr 2024
The way the museum focused on the slaves’ lives at the plantation; the way it humanized and brought them to life. It was a powerful and moving experience.

Whitney plantation was such an amazing place to visit! Really liked the self-guided tour as it really gave us time to reflect on the history and its impact. Our bus driver was lovely and I really enjoyed the knowledge she shared as we took in the beautiful area.
Important Tour
Laura_A, Mar 2024
The Whitney Plantation provides an often overlooked perspective on slavery and should definitely be visited if you are in the area. The pickup/drop off location was very convenient. Our driver was friendly, personable, and informative.
Educational
Kischea_T, Mar 2024
I enjoyed the self guided tour. It allowed me to go at my own pace and process my feelings along the way.Bryant was our tour driver, and I cant say enough good things about him. Bryant gave us so much history along the way but also quiet moments which I appreciated. The tone of his voice was calm and confident which was also relaxing. I would say he was the BEST tour driver we had out of the 3 tours we did. 5 stars hands down.

loved it. Appreciated that it was more true to the slave's experience. I enjoyed the history and and preservation detail given to highlighting the atrocities and not to the large white house.
