What To Expect

Set sail on New York City’s waters on board the Clipper City. This sightseeing voyage explores New York Harbor with outstanding views of the Big Apple’s best attractions.

The original Clipper City was built as a lumber-hauling cargo schooner just before the start of the Civil War. It was then rebuilt from the original plans, which were on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, and more recently refurbished to the modern-day sailing vessel on this tour. The new and improved Clipper City is 158 feet (47 m) long and 120 feet (36 m) high and can accommodate 130 passengers, more than any other sailboat of its kind in the United States.

On this afternoon sail, enjoy beautiful views of New York City landmarks from one of two decks.

Viator should not use this company..
JeriGlynnRonaldson, Oct 2023
First, we were notified 1 hour prior to departure that the Clipper ship we booked on the east side of NYC was out of service, needed a new fuel pump. We were instructed to go to a different marina on the west side of Manhattan to board a schooner. (At some point, they should have acknowledged that this was an inconvenience, but that never happened) Sail time was supposed to be 3 pm. We were there last 3pm, but they crew was not ready. We watched as they chatted and flirted with each other, ignoring the guests standing fifty feet away.. We watched 2 crew members smoke cigarettes and toss the butts in the in the marina. It was gross, and I think, illegal in NYC. It was a lesson for our 4 young boys on how NOT to behave. At 3:20 they commenced boarding. The boat was overcrowded and 3 of our party members had to sit on the deck. They gave us a broken life preserver for one of our children. They didn't offer any beverages to the children. It's was not family friendly! The only time the lead speaker got animated was when she asked for tips at the end. They did the least amount possible. This is the first time we have been so disappointed by Viator's contractors. We always trusted Viator but if this is the new standard, we won't be so loyal in the future. We had a late start and ended early. Viator puts its reputation at risk with vendors like this motley crew.
Awesome sailing experience!!!

Didn’t go!
elizabeth_b, Sep 2023
They changed the location at the last minute, and was not the same ship at all. We called many times and spent 100$ on Ubers to get there and they were literally just untying as we ran up and asked them to wait and they took off. So wasted a lot of money and didn’t get to go. Then had to spend a ton more to get back to the other end of manhattan to get back to our hotel! 😡
What an amazing trip - we’ll worth doing

From being given your boarding tokens to stepping off the Clipper,it was wonderful! Staff were friendly and engaging. We were encouraged to help with the ropes to rise the sails, which was great fun ! The weather helped because the Sun was shining, there was a trumpet player, playing jazz, the bar was open and the Clipper was a fine specimen of a ship, plus we had amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and the wonderful New York sky line.

Sightseeing in NYC

It was a great Saturday afternoon for a sail around NYC, the weather was outstanding, jazz music and atmosphere was on point. Thank you guys for a wonderful day in NYC...
Not well organized
Mike_R, Aug 2023
We were not provided the “ chips “ for a beverage and had to pay additional for the round. Instructions not clear in messaging and staff no help aboard
Difficult to find dock station
Denise_C, Aug 2023
We had a very nice time. My only complaint is that the meet up point said 89 South Ave but was a little confusing finding it. There should be more signs on the front pointing to where the dock station was. I was walking around and had to ask the circle line people where to go. Once I found it it was fine and we had a great time!
Worth the money for the views on a relaxed sail
Julia_O, Oct 2021
Gorgeous views on a very chill ride. There was a full bar with drinks and a few snacks like bags of chips for purchase. The bathrooms onboard were teeny and very clean. The capacity was much larger than I had realized from pictures, so a lot more folks onboard than I had anticipated, but not overcrowded. The location was also not as advertised so we had to change plans to board on the east side 35th pier instead of Chelsea pier. The company communicated the change was for the remainder of the year, so it’s not clear why they can’t update the website.
Warning- location can change at last hour
Stefanie_L, Jul 2021
The ship never showed up at the pier. We called and the phones were not manned. We text and got a response that that location changed and they emailed. We never got and email. We could not make the new location before departure. Super sad situation.
Response from Host, Jul 2021
So very sorry for the issues - but the various changes in schedule and departure points was very fluid around the 4th. We did attempt to contact everyone as best as we can as COVID has meant our call center is not manned currently, but we can/do answer texts about 20 hours per day. If you are coming back to NYC anytime soon, please text us at 212-619-6900 and give your name -- we will be happy to have you back onboard on us. (Also, when booking through this platform, we get no direct email for you, so our email to you went back into the Viator platform and not to a direct email since TA does not share that with us.) Sorry again - please come back and join us!
NY Harbor Cruise

Make sure to find correct debarkation location...lol. The cruise itself is great. Wonderful views of the skyline against the sunset and very friendly and helpful crew and staff. Would do again.

Was in New York for a day with some friends and decided to go on this tour. Amazing views! Totally worth it.
Nothing to do with Statue of Liberty
SEBASTIAN_V, Jun 2019
The title is misleading. Very short, under an hour, and not getting even close to Statue of Liberty.
Very Chilled
JCharlesW, Jun 2019
Very smooth trip. Started in overcast weather but finished in glorious sunshine. Ticked all the boxes.
Awesome

So fun to sit under the sails on the way to the Statue of Liberty. The trip took a little over 1 hour and was just the right amount of time. Miss Liberty was great to see from the water! And it was fun to watch the crew raise and lower the sails. Well priced.
Great Sailing Experience

My family loved this cruise...kids had a blast. Weather was beautiful. Kids and adults help put up sails...great experience for the little ones.
Cancelled due to Mechanical problem
Frank_B, Jul 2018
Mechanical Problem Cancellation of our trip at 1:30p on July 10 2018. We (myself , my son and my grandson) were at the pier at about 12:55p. The young lady on the pier told us that th ship had s mechanical problem and could not sail. She offered to book us at 1:30p on the next day (July 11th). We had tickets for a 2p matinee performance of School of Rock on July 11th. And we flew back to Nashville early on the 12th. I paid for a trip that was cancelled by the boat operator. I should have a refund.
Equipment Malfunction
frankbumstead, Jul 2018
Equipment Malfunction caused cancellation of the event. I and my party were offered an alternative date, but our trip schedule did not permit an alternative.
Mechanical problem
frankbumstead, Jul 2018
I, my son and my grandson were unable to sail on the tall ship on Tuesday, July 10th, because the ship had a mechanical problem. The young lady who was at the desk in front of the pier was very nice and very apologetic. We were unable to shift the cruise to a different day because of schedule conflicts (we were only in NYC on the 9th, 10th and 11th and were fully booked on the 11th). The young lady offered us a cruise on a smaller sailing ship. We walked over to the smaller ship but did not have the time necessary to sail on it.
Really great experience

This was a wonderful way to see our magnificent Lady Liberty. We saw her at dusk. The Tall ship made us feel like the early seekers of a brighter future in America. The crew was wonderful and actually helped a crew of us us experience set sail with our bare hands and then we coached us to take the sails down. The drinks were good.... the day was delightful, sunny, and we had a great breeze. It was Glorious! We are so glad we took this adventure.
