What To Expect

Leave from the central meeting point in Reykjavik and drive to the Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel, one of the largest and most popular in Iceland and only accessible on a guided tour.

Walk through the tunnel with your guide and learn about the volcanic processes that formed the tunnel thousands of years ago. This tunnel is of particular interest because of the beauty of its stalactites, whose many colors are illuminated by sunlight from the entrance.

My family enjoyed walking through the lava cave. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The group stayed together on the way out but we could walk back slowly and take lots of photos on the way back.

It was less than 1.5 hour walk down the tunnel and not 3 hours as advertised. The information provided by the guide was trivial. The experience felt overpriced and overrated

Everyone should walk through a lava tunnel

We met the bus at BSI. Left on time. Our lava tour started on time after a brief safety talk. The walk is easy but can be slippery and could be challenging for someone with balance problems (ice, dark, small staircases) Vanessa was our guide and was great. The lava tube is amazing and a must see while in Iceland. Our bus dropped us off at a bus stop near our hotel. We were back home in the anticipated time frame.

From the moment we arrived at the Lava Tunnels, we all had a great experience. Alex, our tour guide was very informative and had a sense of humour (which was really good - this put us at ease). The whole experience was amazing and all 6 of us (group of friends) had a wonderful time. Even some of us overcame their fears for the hour that we were in the tunnels/caves.

Good tour overall

We really enjoyed this cave tour. We did not know at the time that there is an extreme option. We did the regular one but in the extreme option you go on a long strenuous hike that’s an extra 1km deeper into the tunnel. The temperature was 37 degrees F in the actual tunnel. I would recommend. This hike was only about a half mile each way with some steep parts and stair cases. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and good

This lava cave tour was a different and fun tour! Our guide Lara was amazing and explained a lot about the lava formation and the cave itself. Easy walk, only took about an hour without travel time and was a really fun morning!

One of our favourite experiences

One of our favourite excursions we did in Iceland, which is impressive as we had a busy few days! Our guide was both knowledgeable and engaging and we both left wanting more (in the best way). We learnt lots of interesting new facts and had many laughs along the way. I would recommend this to anybody, the bus even dropped us directly to our hotel on the way back even though that wasn’t included. The bus terminal is only a 15min walk from the centre of Reykjavík and is fully paved.

This trip is a must and highly recommend. The bus transfers were easy to find at the bus station and on time. The lava cave was definitely worth a visit and our guide was so informative and happy to answer any questions. At this time of year with the snow it made the initial walk to reach the cave even more magical. The highlight was at the end of the cave when the lights went off and everyone was silent listening to the noises in the cave in complete darkness, it really was a moment we will never forget.

Lava tunnel is excellent

The lava tour was excellent. However, it was cut short by 20 min due to the bus leaving late. Therefore, they should have let us have an extra 20 min, but they kept to the original time to go back to Reykjavík. I know they need to keep things on time, but the lava tunnel should have been longer or the same amount of time as the ride.
