Great tour guide
Tess_W, Dec 2023
Unfortunately the blue lagoon was closed but they offered a great bunch of alternatives. We stuck to doing just the hike with a lie in and a partial refund. The tour guide was really funny and made the experience. It was heavy snow when we went - if you have the same I'd recommend an extra pair of socks! No stops for food on our tour unlike some of the other tour days where there are gift shops, etc, so bring a packed lunch. The hike was not tricky, I put it on Strava, granted I missed the start but it was little more than 5K total but with a 200m elevation. Perhaps they made it shorter cause of the snow.
Hike and relax
Janet_B, Nov 2023
Our guide was great! Lots of info. Everything ran smoothly. Picked up in small bus then taken to larger bus. There was a couple of extra viewpoints on the way overlooking a lake and to see bubbling pools that were an added bonus. The walk on the old lava flow was amazing - so many shapes and textures. Blue lagoon was a nice ending to soak and relax. A day well spent.
Take it seriously
Russell_S, Oct 2023
1st it’s not for the weak of lungs or calf muscles ! 3 hours of mountain climbing is 3 hours of incline hiking so please take it seriously. IF you’re able to finish, it’s so worth it. Our tour guide Hbo was informative, patient and very very witty. we also stopped by a sea side restaurant for FRESH fish and chips which were amazing. All and all it’s worth it if you’re fit enough to finish it.
Dave’s Special Route
Muhammad_R, Sep 2023
We got Dave as our guide, and Eugene as our driver. Both were funny (think it’s an Icelandic Tour guide thing for them to make all of us laugh! - no complaints there!) Dave was kind enough to explain that there would be no lava flow, but it would still be worth going for the hike. We were supposed to go for the easier route, however, think Eugene didn’t hear it, BUT IT WAS WORTH IT! (This is coming from someone who isn’t really into hiking - I just wanted to see the volcano) My wife and I were the slowest in the group, and I could see Dave constantly turning around to check on us, making sure we’re ok. Dave was very knowledgeable, explaining to us the different types of flows, and why the lava flows had different patterns or colours. As Dave is an avid hiker, he brings you on his special route which allows you to see way more! It was really good to have had Dave as our guide. Will gladly recommend - but please take note, there are no lava flows, just lots of steam here and there (it’s Mother Nature - there isn’t a switch to turn it on - but views are worth it!)
not worth it once the volcano stops erupting
Lenka_H, Aug 2023
The guide was knowledgeable but the volcano fizzled out by the date I took the tour, so all there was to see during our 15K walk was a pile of smoking rocks - still about 2K away from the volcano itself. The soak in the Blue Lagoon afterwards was pleasant but not worth the price.
Response from Host, Aug 2023
Dear Lenka_H, Thank you for sharing your experience after joining us on the Meradalir Volcano Hike & Blue Lagoon Tour from Reykjavik. We value your feedback and are grateful for your insights. We're glad to hear that you found the guide knowledgeable and informative during the tour. However, we apologize for any disappointment caused by the timing of the tour in relation to the volcano's activity. Natural phenomena can indeed be unpredictable, and we understand how they may have affected your overall experience. While the volcanic activity is a significant highlight of this tour, we aim to create a comprehensive and engaging experience that encompasses more than just the eruption itself. We regret that the eruption had subsided by the time of your tour, limiting the sightseeing possibilities in that regard. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the Blue Lagoon experience. We understand that individual preferences vary, and we're sorry to hear that the post-tour soak did not fully meet your expectations. We take all feedback seriously, as it helps us refine our offerings and ensure that each guest's experience is memorable and fulfilling. If you have any further thoughts to share or if there are specific aspects of the tour that you would like to discuss, please feel free to reach out to us at info@bustravel.is. Thank you for considering BusTravel Iceland for your adventure, and we hope that should you choose to explore Iceland with us again, we can provide an even more satisfying experience. Sincerely, Andrius
Is it worth the effort, you decide.
Paul_C, Aug 2023
The good was we did see lava shooting in the air. The bad was it was far away but luckily I brought a good camera to get images. Some people only had a phone and couldn't get images. Also it was 5 miles each way and we're feeling it the day after. I got a blister on my foot, sunburn on my face and dried eyes from the dust and lots of wind. My fault, I should have brought sun screen and sunglasses. Also be sure to get clear meeting times and places. There was a lot of confusion and we ended up separated on the trail. The trail was pretty easy and mostly flat.
Response from Host, Aug 2023
Dear Paul_C, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're glad to hear that you got to witness the awe-inspiring sight of lava shooting in the air and that you were well-prepared with a good camera to capture those moments. We're sorry to hear about the challenges you faced during the hike. The Meradalir Volcano Hike can indeed be a bit challenging for some, especially considering the distance and varied weather conditions. We always recommend our participants come well-prepared with proper hiking gear, including sunscreen and sunglasses, to ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. Regarding the meeting times and places, we apologize for any confusion that may have arisen. We'll take your feedback into account and work on providing clearer instructions to avoid any future miscommunication. We appreciate your valuable feedback and hope that despite the challenges, you were able to cherish the unique experience of witnessing the lava shooting. If you have any further concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at info@bustravel.is. Thank you once again for choosing our tour, and we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you on another adventure in the future. Best regards, Andrius
Once in a lifetime…
Beju_S, Aug 2023
This was unbelievable. HBO our great guide kept pace and we took the E route to get to the viewpoint in about 90 mins. It was not too difficult though the walk back felt much longer. The views are spectacular. I only wish I could have had more time at the viewpoint or to walk up other trails on that route - because it’s all so mesmerising. Blue Lagoon after was much needed.
Great Hike!
Robcam306, Jul 2023
Excellent tour and our tour guide, HBO was fantastic! The hike was long but seeing the volcano made it a worthwhile trip.
Fun but demanding hike
Susan_K, Jul 2023
The day was jam packed with fun stops. The volcano hike was tough. It was 5 miles each way on gravel-like paths with many uphill sections. Really only for experienced hikers.
Fun tour. Great views
robluft, Jul 2023
Great tour. Hike was not as hard as feared. Great views. Tour guide Vickie told many stories and kept things fun
Awesome Day
Elliot_P, Jun 2023
A spectacular hike in other-worldly terrain. Most of it was alongside and atop fields of lava from very recent eruptions. Two highlights: the view of the crater, which lasted only a few minutes when the fog lifted; and Michael, our guide, who combined a vast knowledge of the volcano (and Iceland's history, politics, society and economics) with wit and irony. Awesome day.
Volcano and Blue Lagoon
annemarie_k, Jun 2023
The hike was amazing! Our guides name was Michael he was very knowledgeable about the area, volcanos, and had a great sense of humor. The blue lagoon we were not impressed with the sky lagoon was definitely a better experience. Sure the water is pretty but the staff was rude, to us and many other people around us, and the water was not as warm.
Response from Host, Jun 2023

Highly recommend

Amazing
Tony_R, May 2023
Due to bad weather we couldn't do the hiking on the volcano. Instead, our guide Tony changed the plans and guided us to the lava field near the volcano. It was amazing, walking on fresh lava that was still cooling. Thanks for having that backup idea. Then we moved to the blue lagoon which was nice as well, but very touristic. I much prefered Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik.
Great tour. Would recommend
Irene_W, May 2023
Omar was a great tour guide. Every time we were hiking in Iceland I remembered his advice on how to walk down a steep incline.
Amazing Experience!
Phylicia_A, Apr 2023
I have enjoyed this tour tremendously. We have a friendly driver and tour guide and very blessed to have a great weather. The timing of each place was well paced and ending the tour with blue lagoon - after the hike - was simply amazing!
Fire & Ice Tour
Sebastian_M, Mar 2023
We had a most amazing climb up an active volcano, which was very cold going up above the recent solidified lava flow, followed by a leisurely swim in the Blue Lagoon, at freezing temperatures in the air above but surprisingly hot in the water beneath - fire and ice in both spots!
Great to see the lava field.
Roger_L, Feb 2023
It was great to see the lava field abd walk in the icelandic countryside. The only downside was that the advertised 14km walk turned into a 4km walk which was disappointing. It didn't help that this was in part due to some attendees not having the footwear for the walk.
Fun, good for those who want to be more active
Daniel_S, Jan 2023
The volcano stopped erupting several months ago (which I was already aware), but I was sort of surprised the lava was still steaming and you could feel the heat through the cracks. The hike was easy (for me, though I do a lot of hiking regularly)—the weather was as you’d expect for Iceland (snow, rain, sun, more snow, harder snow, cloudy, sun again every 5-10 minutes or so). The stop at the geothermic area before the hike was pretty neat too.
