What To Expect

Well known by its moniker ‘the Little Red Train,’ the Bernina Express was designed to climb the Swiss Alps with ease. A testament to engineering work completed more than a century ago, the train is still able to complete the cliff-clinging Bernina Pass on a route that now has UNESCO World Heritage status. Travel from Milan to Switzerland in the morning and relax on your coach journey to St.Moritz, watch the scenery change from windswept gorges and snow-clad glaciers to the chic chalets of St Moritz. An elegant vacation spot that’s popular for winter sports, St Moritz has a bounty of attractions to keep you busy. Stroll the lake, ogle the snow-specked mountains that ring the town, enjoy lunch or browse the local chocolatiers to sample Swiss chocolate. All food is at your own expense.
After some free time in the town, board the Bernina red train and gaze out of your window as the historic train passes through the idyllic stretches of Swiss Alps and Northern Italy. Ride along the Bernina Pass to Engadin and over the spiral viaduct of Brusio to Tirano. Hop off the train to enjoy a short break in Tirano before coming back to Milan .

Walking through the quaint city of St Moritz was really beautiful and the train ride through the Swiss Alps is something we will never forget. The scenery was breathtaking and the tour was very well planned out. Marco, our driver was pleasant and navigated the windy roads really well. Rosella, our tour guide was so sweet and taught us so many things on this trip. It was a wonderful day and a highlight of our entire vacation! I highly recommend it!

It was snowing lightly when we reached Saint Moritz....
Roberta_K, Apr 2024
What could be better than a little light snow when in the Alps? The 90 minute stopover in Saint Moritz was ample time to have some lunch and, of course, purchase chocolates. The Bernina Express was a delightful ride through the snow covered Alps. It was a great tour.
Poor Directions Led to Missing Bus
Steven_H, Apr 2024
We missed the tour due to poor directions as to the meeting point AND no one was available to answer a call or email until well after the pick up time to help clarify. We had to rely on locals in the area for directions and they all said one place when in actuality it was another place. A simple direction of “the Zani Viaggi stop next to the Hop in Hop off bus stop” would have made it 100% clearer. There would have been no confusion.
Sit on the right side of the train!
Isobel_B, Apr 2024
Be prepared for a long day of sitting! ~5 hours on the bus, and 2.5 on the train. The views are absolutely amazing, and I think the trek up there is definitely worth it, but if you have the ability to do it yourself, forgo the tour.

The scenery was by far the best part of the trip. We were not real happy we had to share the trip with people who did not understand English. Also, our guide's use of the English language was very difficult to follow. So much so, we sometimes couldn't tell when she finished her explanations in English and switched to Spanish. We felt she did not mingle much with the group. The bus was difficult to get into and out of as there were no hydraulics to lower the bus for easy entry. Also, the bus driver did not assist us. Leg room was limited and uncomfortable especially when people leaned their seats back. This was my second time taking this tour and my memories from the first were much more positive.
Amazing Day Trip from Milan!
Rachel_C, Apr 2024
Angelo was a great guide and always kept the group prepared for the next step. The train was very comfortable and it was amazing to have the windows down for pictures while snow from the Alps blew into the train. St. Moritz was very walkable with great dining and shopping.

Amazing journey

This tour was breathtaking! We rode the bus up to St Moritz and the train back down. The views are stunning
An absolute must!

A memorable experience and highly recommended. A packed itinerary with lots to do and see Well organised trip - our guide was friendly and knowledgeable.
Breathtaking!

The panoramic views were incredibly breathtaking throughout the entire tour. The guide was very informative and friendly, always keeping track of the tour and participants.
1/2 Horrible 1/2 Incredible
Lillian_K, Apr 2024
Here’s the good and the bad. The train was one of the most memorable experiences. The views are spectacular and it was an awe inspiring journey to gorgeous St. Moritz. The bus to the train (and ALL THE WAY back to Milan) was the most uncomfortable ride. I am 5’4 and my daughter is 5’2. THERE WAS NO LEG ROOM. It was so tight that the passenger in the seat in front of us leaned back and my knee is completely bruised. I’ve taken Viator tours all through Europe and have never, ever experienced anything like it. This was awful. My teen is 5’2”, never complains and is still sore from the seat in front of her leaning on her knees. To note- I have never written a bad tour review in all of my travels.
Poor communication skills. Did not learn a thing.
vivianedustin, Mar 2024
We booked the tour in English but our tour guide conducted the tour in both Spanish and English and Italian! The guide switched between English and Spanish without pause and then spoke to the driver in Italian. It was very confusing and extremely difficult to understand. It was disappointing that English was actually the guide's third language. We asked general questions and she didn't understand or couldn't answer properly. We have booked tours with Viator before and were very happy with the quality of tours however this one was truly disappointing. We didn't learn anything about the places we visited. The train ride with the Bernini Express was the highlight of the trip and saved the day. I would recommend not booking this tour and book a train ticket yourself instead. The guide is a lovely person but truly should not be providing a tour in English with such poor communication skills.

The Bernina was a lot of fun. Only wish we had the full glass/ceiling windows; however, we were able to open the window on the train and take lots of pictures. So much fun.
Excellent train journey, but the guide was lacking
Alex_A, Mar 2024
The trip itself was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone. We really loved the train and the trip through the Alps. Unfortunately the guide let Viator down. Her English pronunciation was often difficult to follow and she really did not demonstrate much knowledge or show interest in the trip itself. Questions were not encouraged and when I asked her about the impact on climate change and the amount of snow, she really could not be drawn into making comment. At one point the coach was held up by the activities of a helicopter and again she made no comment as to what it was up to. On the train, we passed what looked like an ice sculpture and she did not point it out. Throughout the guide was working on her laptop and it was as if she was doing the bare minimum to fulfil any 'guide' obligations.
Wasn't exactly what I expected, but still a worthwhile experience!
Shaina_A, Mar 2024
We loved this experience! It wasn't the Bernina Express - but we preferred this train, as you could put the windows down and (carefully) stick your head out the window (Which I believe you cannot do on the actual Bernina Express). Be prepared for a couple of hours on the bus ride to the train in St. Moritz and a 2.5-3-hour bus ride back from Tirano (the last train stop) to Milan. This wasn't something we knew about before booking this experience, however, we still thoroughly enjoyed the sights during the bus and train rides, as well as the 2 hours spent in St. Moritz.
Fantastic
Mary_P, Mar 2024
It was well paced, interesting and the leader was excellent. The views from the train ride in the alps were spectacular.
Great scenery
rsegal47, Mar 2024
Well organized. If you are looking for a unique lunch, get the cheese fondue at the Blue Rabbit in St Moritz. Only 33 Euro/pp (haha).
We had a wonderful time...

We had a wonderful time on this tour with guide Salvatore. He was patient, kind and very knowledgeable about the area and its history. I would highly recommend this!
The Alps
Vita_J, Mar 2024
This is a must do!!! Relaxing 2 hr bus ride to St. Moritz, until you’re going into the mountains…our bus driver was excellent & skilled, not a ride for the faint of heart!!! Like everyone else said, try to sit on the left (best views initially); however, the right has equally amazing views of the Alps. Hands down, an amazing day trip!
Not worth doing it from Milan. If you want to see ice and snow go to Switzerland
Mona_M, Mar 2024
Nice views overall but the 2.5 hours train ride is a little boring. You end up seeing only white ice all the time so there is really nothing much to see. Also the operator did not provide details about the whole trip. It’s a 3+ bus ride to st. Mortiz ,2 hours stop for lunch and shopping (again there isn’t much to do just a couple of restaurants and few shops) so I believe 1 hour was enough. And then the 2.5+ train ride and back to the bus for a 3+ ride back to Milan! So you’ll be sitting most of the time. If you have extra days in Milan or you’ve been in Milan before then go for it. Otherwise I believe there’s much more to see in Milan specially for a first timer so I felt that was a waste of time
Awful crowded uncomfortable ride
Lubo_F, Feb 2024
This is trip could be summed up under the key words : Cheap Ryanair style experience Initially, I wasn’t aware how much bus riding is involved- instead of having a comfortable coach with decent leg room - a coach in style of Ryanair was available- as many people to get in - regardless if they comfortable or not (I had one of my legs fours hours in the aisle) After arriving in St Moritz I have escaped the trip - The feeling was - quantity over quality- whatever the participants like it or not If course, it was possible to book first class and of course it was possible to take a train to Milano The terrible bus was the money machine , I guess Whatever, it was an absolute awful experience The guide was nice - three languages tour was also bit crowded- it fitted the general assumption- go milk as many people as possible
